Due to recent health issues (at the age of 23!) I have decided to stop drinking again, hopefully for a long time or forever. I have always associated drinking with fishing and I am going to have to adapt. I recently went fishing (sober) and was rewarded with a nice 14.5" large mouth bass.  I have now been sober for 19 days and counting. Is anyone else out there going through this experience as well? Hopefully some Life Members have some success stories to share to offer encouragement. Happy fishing to all.

I've never associated drinking with fishing. Fishing has always been enough of a thrill without the booze. Besides I'm casting every minute, I don't have time to pick up a brew. My partying days are pretty much past me. I've gotten into enough trouble already, and now the stakes are far too costly for me to even think about going back down that road. I wish you luck with your sobriety. I know you'll find it to be better in the long run. Heck just think of all the money you'll save and can buy fishing gear with. If you ever need to vent don't be afraid. There will always be someone here that will offer some encouragement.

fishing with my Dad never involved drinking. booze and boats don't mix. and while I'm not casting as often as Bob, it's time better spent on other things

I believe you can get fined( I'm not sure if you go to jail like you do if you're caught while driving a car) if caught drinking while driving your boat. Alot of those big lakes have Game & Fish officers, policemen, etc...

So thats great you stopped drinking.

I was a heavy partier for a LOT of years.....but fishing and drinking 99.9% of the time NEVER mixed for me. I simply enjoyed being out in Mother Nature too much to waste the time with a BUZZ.

I did go out on a pontoon boat with some college buds ONCE...and drank and fished...had fun...with no accidents.

But that was the ONLY time....as the next day I thought...."what the heck was I doing???"

Being near or on the water is dangerous enough...without the alcohol.

I TOO wish AND hope that you can stay away from the combination of drinking and fishing.

And I TOTALLY agree with Bob...that there will be folks on here that can and will listen....and offer encouragement

I'll go even one step further....and say....don't hesitate to PM us if you get to feeling depressed. Lack of alcohol will put you there real quick.

Let me just clarify, I have never operated a boat or a car while under the influence of alcohol. I pretty much always fish from the shore and if I am on a boat I am not drinking. Also, when I talk about drinking while fishing, I am referring to having a few beers while fishing from shore with friends. Most of my drinking occurred away from the water (in bars) and that's where the issues ensued. Being out at the lakes is always a pleasure for me and now I can enjoy it even more. I am already noticing a positive difference in the quality of my life, but definitely get urges to drink, especially when associating with friends that I usually drink with.

Thanks for offering your support!

I enjoy drinking, I seldom get hammered anymore but I still need a beer when I get home from work. Alcoholic, probably, but like I said I seldom get hammered anymore. When it comes to fishing I never drink, to busy fishing like Bob said. I don't even have the urge. Good luck on your soberity!

Hang in there Masaitis  wished I had figured it out as young as you are. Like a lot has said before me I didn't need it fishing or out hunting. Don't let your bud's drag you back into it. That's was the hard part for me I would still hang around with them in the bar but just drank soda. Then when I gave the smokes up also I HAD to stop going in the bars.............much better with out all that crap but I understand why folks do it. Wish you well !!!!!

Masaitis,

Back in the day, it wasn't unusual for me to have a couple jugs of wine or short case of beer while fishing from the banks of my favorite rivers.  For some reason, I didn't fall in and drown.  I would go on the wagon from time to time, only to fall off harder.  I gave it up for good 18 years ago, saving my life, my career, and my marriage (not necessarily in that order).  The first six months were extremely hard when doing things associated with drinking, but I was able to fight through it each time.  There are still times these days when a beer would be really good, or a glass of brandy, but what the heck, that's what water and coffee are for, right?  Only you can quit for you, and I feel anyone can if they want.  Above all remember, no one is punishing you for fishing, and fishing can still be enjoyable without self medication.  Your instincts will improve, your health will improve, and your life will improve without it.  You may even like fishing more if you channel your energy the right way.  Good luck buddy, 20 days and counting.

Thanks a lot JustDave, I am glad to hear about your success, it is really reassuring.  I can't wait to get back out to one of my favorite lakes and enjoy it even more than before. I really appreciate all of your positive energy and support.

 No problem,

Like BigB says, it is definately on day at a time.  You'll find out who you're true friends are by the ones that support your efforts.  Misery loves company, so there will always be those that want to share theirs.  I've had to change a lot of my aquaintences through the years, but have some very good friends which support my decisions and you'll find them as well.  Health is a very good reason, wheather physical, mental, or spiritual to give it up.  Remembering that makes it easier to pass.  Use fishing and other hobbies to replace the time spent drinking and you'll find it cheaper and much more productive in the long run.

Continued success,

JustDave

One day at a time is right Masaitis. I've been sober for almost 9 years now. If I can do it anyone can, including you. I didn't do it alone though, I couldn't. Look up AA in your phonebook or online. Give it a try. It has changed my life radically, all for the better. It is not an exaggeration to say it saved my life. You have a lot of support. Message me if I can help in any way.
Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him (and his family) for a lifetime.

Thanks a lot for your support DrBubba, I will look into that as well.  I am doing pretty well so far with a little help from my true friends and having time to get out there and fish always helps.  I have definitely had some rough patches, but I have pulled through thus far. Thanks again.

I believe that drinking is a personal decision, fishing or not.  If the boat contest is $20 for the 1st fish, $50 for the most and $100 for the biggest, that's great.  I've seen other rules posted:  No drinking 'till the 1st fish is on board.  That very well could be 7:00 am!

My rule:  If you can handle it, drink.  If you can't, quit.  Even my Father quit at one point.  There went my stock in Miller Beer!!  If I start getting drunk on  fishing trips, I'll quit the next day, and for good.

Way to go Masaitis your doing a great thing for yourself! I can understand the troubles you going threw..not quit with the fishing and drinking but in the fact that i lost my Father to the bottle a few years back and every time we would go to our camp in northern maine he ALWAYS had a beer in hand when ever we were out on the boat or scouting for deer and moose. I dont drink my self but i am addicted to fishing haha...remember your not in this alone and like many of your fellow members here you can contact me or any of them to speak you mind and vent with your troubles. feel free to PM me if you want to talk about anything and i will be sure to respond back to you right away. Good luck and keep you head up your great new journey!

Things are going great so far, I am so glad that I have so much support, it is really reassuring. I went out and fished my local beach and caught and released a 25" Halibut the other day (sober), which was quite rewarding. At the beginning of next month I have planned another lake trip to get out there and land some more Rainbow Trout. I have found that hanging out with my drinking friends is quite possible if I just drink water or some sort of other non-alcoholic beverage while they are drinking alcohol. Somehow it messes with my head and it doesn't bother me as much if I have some sort of drink in my hand. I haven't slipped up once since I started, not even a drop, so it is going well. Thanks again!

Good job Masaitis. A major hurdle in your recovery will be being able to associate with your friends who still drink. I know when I'm at a bar it doesn't feel right to not be drinking with the crowd. Hopefully your friends are more than just drinking buddies, and they'll help not hinder you in your recovery. God gave me a beautiful daughter which made it easy for me to end the crazy days. I'll still party from time to time, but not around her, and only when I know I don't have to drive. Keep up the good work, and I look froward to hearing more fishing reports from you.

I started drinking like a fish when I was 16. any excuse. never saw me sobore. I found God when my son got minigitus when I was 22. I quit cold turkey at the hospital. I was a drunk and a druggy. I stayed by his bed twenty four seven for two weeks. I have been soboar for over 9 years. I have reached the point where I can have one or two drinks at a friends, and not back slide. I don't get drunk or even desire it. I never back slid once. I may drink once a year now. You just have to have a true desire to quit, and just keep you will. I would suggest that you let God hold your hand my friend. Don't stop fishing, just find friends who don't drink to go with you and keep you focused.

Thanks a lot for sharing your story and your advice BigD.DaddyDave.  I am definitely having some trouble with urges and I don't think I will be able to enjoy just having a drink or two for a while, but I definitely have the desire to quit after ending up in the emergency room.  My friends have been very understanding and they never tempt me with alcohol when they drink.  They also make it easier on me by frequently reinforcing the fact that I am the same funny, enjoyable, and committed friend without alcohol, which really helps me mentally.  Thank you again to everyone who has cared about my situation and who has supported me so far.  I am open to all questions, comments, stories, and advice.  To those who read this today: Happy Halloween!

You are doing great Masaitis!!! Keep it going! When I was younger, I didn't know what it was to have a drink, without following it with another, then another... My Wife and I would attend parties or dances an hour or two away from home, then afterwards I would drive home. The GOOD LORD must have been watching over us, cause I always managed to get home safely. My four years in the National Guard didn't help matters either. Every meeting was a party at the end of the day, again I would drive back and forth, from home to the base, another hour each way. Finally I said to my self, Enough is Enough!!! If I can control my drinking, I'm not going to let it control me. I quit by weening my self off with O'Douls. It's the only one I felt tasted like my old beer, unless the dance hall/club only had Sharps. At clubs, I would order a Coke, and everyone thought I had a mix drink. LOL As time went on, it got easier and easier, then 15 years later, I realized I had it beat. I became an ACTUAL casual drinker, now I can have a drink or two and not crave another. They only draw back is that I had started smoking alot more. I figured that if I could quit drinking I could quit smoking too. Now, smoking was harder to quit but I have done it!!! I've been smoke free for three years now. Oh, I still crave a cigarette once in a while, but I just tell myself "aloud", NO! , and the urge is gone in a second or two. YOU CAN DO IT TOO!!! Just remember what it was like before and ask yourself if it's worth it!?!?

Keep up the fight man. I had a bad drinking problem up to about two years ago. I quit drinking for 4 months until I felt I could handle only having one or two drinks. I still drink, but I have not had any problems like I did in the past. I almost lost everything. Just remember that there are far more important things in life than alcohol.

First off, let me just say that I really appreciate all of the continuous support that all of you lifers have given me so far. It makes a big difference knowing that I have people checking up on me and caring about me without even knowing me.  Things are still going well so far, I went out to my old favorite bar last night with my friends and played pool for 4 hours while only drinking water and it went great.  I get very tempted still, but it is getting to the point where I don't want to ruin what I have going for me.  I still haven't slipped up, not even one sip, and I hope to keep going strong with the support of you lifers and my other friends. Thank you very much!

It's great to hear your still hanging in there. You'll do just fine. I to know where your coming from. I to kicked a bad habit not a while back. Just think of all that gear you can buy with the money instead of that case of beer. Hey more gas for the boat ( if you got one) and we all know that price ain't cheap.

Keep being strong....and believe in yourself Masaitis

Fred makes a good point here....seen in several of these other good posts on this topic

I had a DUI back in 2000 (cost me $5k even without a lawyer)....and the only reason that I got it was because the bar owner (previously good friend of mine) THOUGHT I was trying to bed his wife (NOT!)....and he had an off-duty airport cop friend of his follow me after leaving the bar one evening....and called the local cops saying that I was weaving down the road.

After going through that...and some other things related to that part of my life during that same time period, I quit for 6 months....during which time I came to some conclusions...

1. THere's times that a person can have a couple of drinks (or more)...but have a game plan SET ahead of time if there is driving etc...involved.

2. Be VERY careful...and cognizant...of HOW you act when and where you are drinking...as in my DUI experience....even the best of friends can turn on you.

3. Keep track of your eating. Having a drink on an empty stomach can start a binge...and start you on a dependency for sure. And binge drinking has killed hundreds of folks in the last 10 years.

4. I don't crave the stuff....but I do enjoy it. I can easily cut myself off. This is a question of willpower mentioned by SEVERAL other good folks here.

Finally....if you feel stressed...down in the dumps...etc....TELL / Talk to folks.

They...and we....will listen

Man You just have to keep on keepin' on. I have found that a good minister with one on one help is better than AA. AA is still another addict that can slip and bring you with them. One on one help from some one who has not had the same problem doesnot carry that risk on back sliding and taking you with them. A minister is trained to motivate you.

Hi Masaitis, hope things are going well and it sounds like they are. Just a reminder that you're not alone. Plenty of folks like us all around and very supportive. I used to icefish with a bottle and a bone ever since I started. Took a bit of getting used to but icefishing without it is more enjoyable today than it ever has been. Been sober 4 yrs now and trouble free. Funny how boooze and trouble go hand in hand for some of us. Keep up the good work!! Hit me up with a PM if you need to. God Bless!

Hey everyone, thank you all so much for being good friends to me when I need it most. I am doing great so far, I still have not even had one sip of alcohol. I have noticed that I have been eating more lately (almost too much) but that is minor, considering the circumstances. I still get tremendous urges to drink when I am under stress or not feeling up to par, but I try to distract myself whenever it happens. Can't wait to get out there and fish again and really enjoy immersing myself in nature. I still appreciate any and all advice that you have to give, and although I may not reply every time, I am definitely reading everything you have to say and taking it to heart. Thanks a lot everyone.
