pricey fishing rods

I have spent my whole life fishing and while I have bought higher end reels I have never spent a lot on the rods. When I see rods priced at say $150 or more for a walleye spinning rod I wonder if there is a big difference.I understand the price on specialty rods for say saltwater fishing where the fish can weigh a lot and put great pressure on the rod and it has special guides on it or some other rods for special situations but I wonder about the average fisherperson who goes after bass, panfish, and walleye at the local pond.Do any of you out there have a top end rod and feel it is worth the money? Thanks for any answers!

1 piece -v- 2 piece fishing rods? What's your thoughts?

I am in the market for a new fishing rod and was looking to purchase a St. Croix eyecon spinning rod (7'6" MLXF) for walleye and smallmouth fishing in my local river/reservoir. Was tossing around the pros and cons about a 1 piece vs 2 piece model (1 piece for sensitivity, 2 piece for convenience) and was wondering what my fellow memebers opinion on the subject was. Is there really that much of a difference in sensitivity between two rods?

tv fishing shows

I was wondering if anybody else has grown tired of tv fishing hosts hauling in one bass after another until you can't tell them apart? I am old enough to remember back in the late 70"s and early 80"s when tv fishing shows were few and far between. The Fishing Hole with Jerry McGinness[?] and one or two others and no recording them so you had to watch them live! At the time I thought it was the greatest thing going because they were on in the winter time here in N.E. Pa. and if you were not into ice fishing it reminded you of good things to come. But now they are on all the time and it doesn't seem to matter if it is Bill Dance,Jimmy Houston,Roland Martin or whoever they fish for bass 90 percent of the time and just cast and reel in one after another until it seems like a continuous rewind of the same fish.Am I too critical of these shows? I would like less bass and more walleye, trout and panfish with more tackle tips. Thanks for reading.

Fish Finder - Dumb Question

Hey I have a stupid question....I have my fish finder attached to the bottom of my trolling motor (rear of boat). When I am looking at the display on the fish finder, what area am I looking at in relation to the water. I hear different answers, behind the boat, in front of the boat and under the boat - Does anybody know the real answer that they are willing to respond and explain?

Thanks

cheap fishing supplies

Has anyone seen the website at the bottom of some NAFC pages called DHgate.com.I went there and it is selling fishing gear at unreal prices! It appears to be some kind of wholesaler out of China and offers free shipping. Some of the lures have to be purchased in larger quanties like say a dozen of one kind.I was wondering if anyone has used them and has feedback. At the cost of lures today it might be a real money saver. Thanks for any replies.

Bass

I have been going to georgia every year for vacation to visit my mom and she has a nice little pond(which you can easily throw across it) but deep. She was cleaning around the pond and a largmouth bass jumped to get a bug and almost hit her in the head(which i thought was funny of course). This Bass looked to be atleast 5lbs+ so i go there every year to fish...i hooked this fish or one about the same size with a spinner bait, it bent my hook and got away. Since then everytime i go fishing i cannot get a bite, i tried deep and top lures and nothing...is there any suggestions on what to try? I will be going again this year and would really like to hook it again...
What's a good reel to match with the St. Croix Eyecon!?

I just recently purchased the 6'6" med-light fast action St. Croix Eyecon rod, and I am wondering what are some good reels to go along with the rod. I want to make sure I get a nice reel that will balance the combo out. I will be fishing for Walleyes most of the time. I've heard a lot of good reviews about the Pflueger President XT, and was wondering if that would be a good combo? I'm open for other ideas for reels as well and any advice would be greatly appreciated!

wacky worms

I was wondering if anybody uses Jersey Riggs for wacky worm fishing? We have been using them for almost 20 years and catch lots of fish.I find it interesting that Yamamoto Sencos get the credit for "inventing" this style of angling! If you check out Jeff Camarinos?website you can see where he came out with these 25 years ago.Is it possible Sencos were around back then and I didn't know about them?I don't see how as back then even without the internet I was up on the latest doings. They are not sold by the big stores so we buy them here in N.E.Pa. in small tackle shops. They cost $6.00 for a pack of 20 so they are cheaper than Sencos. At one time they were even packaged at nearby Hawley,Pa.We lost count of the fish we have caught with them over the years!Again I am surprised at how many fishermen are crazy for the Sencos as if they were the new kid on the block.Just something to talk about on a cold winter day. Thanks for reading!

Question about HUGE rays seein in NW Florida (from the Destin Bridge)

Hello all...some of you may know me as a relatively new member
of the NAHC.

I have a question about some rays that I've seen here in NW
Florida (specifically, from theDestin bridge, while cast-net fishing for
mullet, in the East Pass. The Destin bridge is around 35' (or so I'm
told) around where I fished{1}****il my bridge net got too old---I no
longer have the equipment to make the lead weights to finish making my
new one). From that height, back before I retired that net, I used to see
HUGE rays come through in groups at certain times between June and
November (probably was sometime around August to October, but my memory
isn't clear on this, and the month when I'd see these monsters varied.

The rays I saw were both Manta Rays and either Stingrays or something
that resembles a Stingray closely enough to be confused with one. They
moved in groups (less than 10), and appeared from that height to be
around 25 to 30 feet (wingspan). I've been trying to find a species of
saltwater Singray that even approaches that wingspan, and from what I've
read, there are none that come even remotely close. Does anyone have any
idea what these might have been? Again, they closely resemble a Stingray
(tail, roundish body, and all). The more I think about it, the more
curious I am.

Thanks,
   --jim (aka Spooky)

PS: This year, I plan on using my dock net (a tiny 10 foot 10;5 lb cast
net) with the handline from my bridge net, and will also be buying a
rod/reel for the other type of fishing. Favorites: mullet (silvers
for frying, black mullet for smoking/grilling and from there, making
mullet dip), sheepshead, speck, and, though I've yet to keep one in
the net long enough to pull it up, redfish. Sheepshead are also tough
to hold onto---I had one in the net once that was dead center in the
net as it fell, and when my net was about 3 inches from the bottom,
he turned on his side and slipped right under the leadline and out of
the net. All I could do was tip my hat and acknowledge that it didn't
get that big by being stupid......

Scent 'eraser'

When I bought my (used) boat, there was a small bottle of a Berkley product I think called 'Erase'. It was something you would rinse your hands with to remove unwanted smells etc. like gas, nicotine, what have you. I haven't been able to find that product- maybe it's been discontinued. What about other similar products? It seems to me I read about one somewhere but I don't remember where. Anyone know where I'd find any?
