Not a clue

My wife and I have discussed learning to fly fish, and I haven't got a clue where to start! We will most likely try to catch a few bluegill from their beds this Spring on some of the inland lakes near our home and if it works out well I would consider a trip to Montana this summer to fish with my cousin on the Yellowstone for some trout. He has a drift boat and thinks he could teach us enough in a couple days to have some success, but I'd like to have some experience before we go.

I live about 30 minutes from Cabela's in Dundee, and about 1 hour from Jann's Netcraft. I know they have seminars that could probably get me started, and I know there is unlimited info on the web, but is there a "Bible" of flyfishing - much like the Chapman Piloting and Seamanship is to boating?

Thanks,

Bill

Well what do we have here?

So I bought one of those grab bags from Orvis last year and I'm still trying to find uses for some of the stuff I got it in (gold foam, purple quills, among other things) but I'm still trying to figure out what one item is used for, because I've been drawing a complete blank. It's a thick, very soft, felt-like substance that gets progressively more orange as you look more directly at it and more yellow as you tilt it towards the horizontal. It's really bizarre stuff. Best way I can describe it would be if someone made a sheet of chenille. Can anyone tell me possibly what this stuff is and what's it's practical application at the tying bench?

Info on fly reel needed.

Hopefully someone who fly fishes in the NAFC can ID a nice near mint fly reel I got recently.

It is a beautiful aluminum cased fly reel,.. capable of being left or right hand retrieve. The aluminum spool has a single wooden handle. On the reel foot is a paper tag saying.. AF 3400. Reel foot is attached to casing by 2 gold plated screws.

I have taken the reel apart. and there is no wear or use indicated, very clean. Back of reel has an adjustment knob for the drag setting. + and -

As the model number is AF 3400... Could it have been made by Shimano? Bean?.. Maybe Martin? Scientific Anglers? Ocean City? Shakespeare? Berkley? St Croix?

Would like to know who made it, and apparent value new.
Conehead Question

So I got some coneheads yesterday at another fantastic Fly Fishing Show (my 3rd year now) and when I went home to put them on a size 6 streamer hook it couldn't make the bend to get onto the shank. Is the hook too big or the conehead too small or vice versa or what? Is there anything I can do to use these heads? The package says they're 1/4''.

Setting the bar high with PB rainbow

Wow, what a way to start the new year. My wife and I picked up a friend and his wife and headed to the local river for an afternoon of fly fishing. I have a new 10' 4wt Czech nymphing rod that I was just dying to try out. Everybody rigged up and we stepped down to the river. Air temp was about 55 with sunny skies. Water temp, a lot colder (I don't check the water temps). Anyways, I rigged up with a size 24 zebra midge and a size 16 gold beaded hare's ear nymph (we tie our own flies). My wife's set-up was about identical as these are our go-to rigs for winter fishing these large rainbows. Now, an average catch will be around 14" to 16". Some go smaller and some go up to 20" and even 22". But, imagine my surprise when I hook into this 24" torpedo on my second cast. My wife caught a glimpse of a large rainbow rolling and pointed at it and I told her I was already hooked up to it. I fought it hard and it fought valiantly with my wife standing at the ready with her net. I didn't realize my biddy was standing up on shore (he and his wife took a little longer getting set-up back at the van) video taping the battle on his I-phone (which he later posted to You-Tube). Once it hit the net, the barbless midge easily popped off its gums. We quickly taped it at 24" and took a couple of quick pics before releasing it back to fight another day. This ties the largest trout I ever caught on a fly rod from last Super Bowl Sunday and now it will be a small goal to try and best it throughout the year. Maybe on our Alaska trip in July???

Bob Clouser's Deep Minnow

This a classic pattern that is undoubtedly the most effective pattern for warm water or salt water and there are countless variations on this fly. Bob Clouser was really one of the great pioneers in tying for warm water species.

Like all of my flies there are some changes made to the pattern that have found that have made the fly perform better for me. So try this pattern and see what you can come up with for your area.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRMTu5_IGlA&list=UU4vswOaYRBGNBRwJeS-lk4w&index=1&feature=plcp

Local fishing hot w/BIG trout!

My wife and I got some time yesterday to hit the local river. Weather was upper 60's, lower 70's, sunny skies. Spent about 4 hours on the river, mostly Czech nymphing with my favorite go to fly, size 24 zebra and/or tiger midges. On top, we had prince nymphs, size 18. I also brought along an 8wt with some sinking line that I usually use on the coast. I wanted to strip buggers, as I'm not that confident in buggers. WOW! My attitude changed yesterday. To start off, my finger is still healing from surgery two weeks ago and the first cast sent pain shooting up my arm. I quickly realized I can cast left handed, more or less. Then I switch out and start stripping. Long story short, my wife caught her PB trout, about 20", while I caught two back to back biggies stripping a black bugger, size 12. We managed to C&R a couple of others, but these were our best for the day. BTW, my wife isn't use to trout this big and lost a really big one at the net (wouldn't wait until I reached her to help) as it snapped her 4X tippet. Later, she had another one snap her line, just after she landed her PB. All in all, a great day. We got out to the river around 10:30 and left around 3:00. Mid-day fishing, gotta love it.

Tying the Hairy Fodder

Now that fall fishing has really kicked in I like to use a pattern that really lets me slow down and to bounce the bottom for less active fish.
