Wally King i hope you dont mind the abr. we do the drinkin thing while were fishin and watchin tv on the battery just hope it doesn't mess with the vexilar because there are alot of beeps showing and i hope it aint the announcers on the tv and really fish down the hole

Daytime Crappie

Since I was quite young, I've always fished for Crappie through the ice after dark. We'd get set up on the ice about an hour before sunset and catch a few bluegills on waxworms, then as soon as it was dark we'd light our Coleman lanterns, tip our jigs with minnows and slam the crappie!

I've tried to catch crappie through the ice during daylight hours but have never had a lot of luck - any suggestions?

I'm seventeen years old and I went ice fishing for my first time with my friend. It was also his first time so we went and talked to my uncle about what to do. My uncle let us borrow two tip ups which were new to me and a little pole that had a jig tied onto it. He told us to make sure the ice was thick enough and to follow foot prints and safety stuff. He told us to bring a metal bar to break the ice since he didn't have an auger and he told us that he uses minnows. He told us to bring a spoon but we didn't know why. So we finally got to the lake and we did not dress warm enough or bring a spoon or even bring minnows. So we used other peoples holes that they made and stayed for about ten minutes and then left. So how do you actually ice fish? If you use a jig what do you put on it? If you use a tip up can you only use live minnows? How deep do you have to fish?

First Time Out on the Ice

Stepped out on the hardwater for the first time ever today (fishing, that is) and it sure was interesting. First off, we didn't catch anything on the jigs and spoons we used, all tipped with mealworms, but this was more of a "let's work out the kinks before we get fancy" type outing. Second and more oddly was the fact that the big pond we went 45 mins away for was 100% blue water! After over a week of sub-freezing temps! Wanted to know if anyone could hazard a guess as to why, especially because the water closer to home had 4 inches of ice and this pond, where the air temp was consistently colder, maxed out at 1 inch, and only within 10 or so feet of shore. I think it might be because it's spring fed but I would think that would maybe only affect 30 feet or so around the spring. Any guesses?

Anyone have any ice?

With yesterday not getting above freezing and last night down to 14 we have a thin layer of ice on the ponds. Tonight's forecast is for 15 degrees so I don't think it's going anywhere. But the weekend it's suppose to get to 50, so it won't last.

Howdy fellas,

Quick question for everyone. I purchased one of those cheap Hummingbird 120 fish finders at BPS a few weeks ago to use for ice fishing.

Does anyone else use these "summer" fish finders for ice fishing??

If yes, how should I set it up? I was thinking of using PVP to keep the transducer still.

Ice Fishing bibs

I need a little help guys. I live in central Ill n only get to ice fish 10 to 15 days a year. Im indue of some of a pair of new bibs,my old walls have just about had it. Just wanna know whats the best bang for the buck,my most concern is in the knee protection,don't wanna spend alot on something I not gonna use alot. I don't mind spending good money as long as I get a good product. Also I have planned a trip to Sturgeon Bay , Wis in feb an I know mine aren't gonna make the trip.

Tip-Up Alarms

Have any of you used some type of alarm or strike sensors for you tip ups? I am tired of checking my flags every 2 minutes.

I've seen some on YouTube. I was thinking of using those cheap window alarms, but i'm not sure how to attach them to my tip ups correctly. All I have seen is how to attach them to the thermal tip ups.

Hello to all the Michigan ice fishermen on the board. Are there any Michigan members here who fish Lake St. Clair in the winter? I live in Roseville, Mi. and I regularly fish Lake St. Clair all year round, but I really like to ice fish on the lake. I was thinking along the lines of maybe getting a group of club members together and hit the ice one weekend this winter. Would any one be willing.

My son stepped into a hole ice fishing yesterday. I knew his ice fishing trip was over. As I walked him to the ice shack to get him out of wet clothes and call my girlfreind to bring replacement clothes and pick him up, he said "more fish pole please". Just as I got his boots and snow pants off, he said "fish hit", I looked over my shoulder and saw the spring bob on the swish rod dropping, he pushed me aside and reeled up this perch.

When was the last time you saw a guy ice fish barefoot.

Not on the forum too much posting but I had too share. Catches included 3 char over 30 inches and a laker at about 36. All the fish were on the surface for a short time and released. My wrist still hurt, fishing depths of 145 feet.

New Ice Tournament Series in NYS

Next season there will be a new tournament series called the NYS Elite Ice Pro-Am Tournament Series featuring 5 large big-money/big-stakes events spanning across the state. The captains of the Finders Keepers professional sport fishing team will be organizing and directing the events, with the help of several other tournament directors, tackle shop owners, and fisheries promotions officers. The top prize package at each event will be $10,000 (provided minimum registrants are achieved), and we're looking to include a pair of 4-wheelers in the doorprize drawings. Mad Ice Fisherman

Is anybody else mad about the crappy ice fishing weather this year? I am from north Illinios. Only able to get on ice 3 times this winter!!!!

AND I just bought the new Jiffy propane auger this winter. Works great, didnt get to show it off at the derbys.
