Big swordfish caught out of Bud n' Mary's this week, islamorada, fl!

Well everything seemed to settle down after the minimal tropical storm we encountered last week. The weather has been been very good, with moderate to light winds in the 5 to 12 knot range for the most part. The Mahi bite has still been fair the past few days. If you find the right piece of debris (which holds bait and keeps the mahi around), your day can be made, which happened on the Catch 22 a few days ago. They found a piece of bamboo and caught 50 mahi off it to 12 lbs! But a few other boats didn't catch any mahi, but all of them found plenty of blackfin tuna up to 10 lbs on the humps. There's also been some decent bottom fishing for tilefish and grouper in the 500' depth range. The Gon Fishin V had a mixed bag with a little bit of every thing a few days ago including a decent wahoo on the way out. The Predator had a very happy couple who caught a bunch of schoolie mahi as well as some blackfin tuna and skipjacks. On the very deep side of fishing, the Daytime Swordfish bite has been as good as ever!!! Capt. Scott on the Catch 22 put original boat owner of the "Catch 22", Charlie, on a 180 lb daytime broadbill a few days ago. Capt. Nick Stanczyk fished with George Poveromo for a couple days shooting an episode for George's TV show, which will air early 2013. The first day we caught 256 lb broadbill, and the next day we caught a few tuna, mahi, and then released an estimated 175 lb broadbill, so keep an eye out early next year for the show. We got out on the BNM today and caught a 300 lb sword on the first drop! George Poveromo went out for fun today on his boat with Carl, who ran the camera boat for two days, and after a 7 hour battle on the stand up tackle they boated a 380 lb sword!
Which brand of braid is best for halibut?

I am going to be halibut fishing in Oregon this summer and was wondering if anyone has a suggestion as to the best braid to use? I will probably be fishing 200 - 300 ft. down and wanted to get smaller diameter to use less weight as I drift.
Trolling from a Catamaran in British Virgin Islands

We are chartering a catamaran and bouncing around the British Virgin Islands at the beginning of June and the boat comes equipped with a basic trolling setup. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what lures/bait to use while trolling these waters, and if it's worth bringing a small spinning setup with me for our times moored in the bays? Any advice at all about fishing these waters would be greatly appreciated. I am usually a mountain trout stream fisherman, so new to this saltwater stuff.

Thanks,

Ian

What is a good vertical jigging reel?

I recently got to do some vertical jigging for the first time, and immediately loved it. I am looking to buy a reel to use mostly for vertical(butterfly) jigging. I really like Shimano reels, but I can't decide which one to get. I was thinking something along the line of a trinidad, torium, or tyros. Any suggestions? Thanks!

455 lb Daytime Swordfish! Islamorada, Florida Keys

We had John and Pam aboard the BNM out of Bud n' Mary's Marina in Islamorada, Florida for a Florida Keys Fishing Trip on 9-24-11. Pam insisted they were lucky and we were going to catch a swordfish guaranteed. I told both of them we had a good shot, but there had been quite a few small fish around which can be very frustrating when trying to hook them in the daytime. John is a Navy vet returned to the U.S. and was very much looking forward to a fishing trip! Well it wasn't long until their luck kicked in, on the way out at 15 knots our high speed lure starts screaming and 10 minutes later John catches his first wahoo, a nice 28 lber. I was thinking at least we didn't get skunked today. We continued out to the swordfish grounds and a few miles inside we found a nice weed line with some mahi on it. We hit one school and caught 15 nice schoolies and a couple small gaffers. Both John and Pam were all smiles and I though maybe they wouldn't even notice if we didn't catch a swordfish. An hour later we were on the bottom in 1500' drifting for a broadbill. After 30 minutes we hooked up, the fish seemed small, and after 10 minutes he threw the hook. We make another drift in the same area, but after an hour with no bite, we wind up. I run a few miles south and drop again. After 45 minutes without a bite, we get ready to wind up, and there she is. We're hooked up to a daytime sword. John gets in the chair and goes to work. After an hour I see the fish, I know she's big, but not quite how big. The fish dives all the way back to the bottom and John goes back to work. At 2 hours he has her near the boat again, I see the swivel behind her tail and realize the fish is foul hooked in the belly somewhere. After a couple quick loops the fish goes back to the bottom. Now we're 3 hours into the fight, and John gets the fish within 50' of the boat again, we get a quick glimpse, but down shes goes. At 4 hours into the fight, and everybody exhausted, John gets the fish 10 feet away! We get a harpoon shot, but it pulls out after a few seconds. The fish looks like it's getting tired though, but still dives back to the bottom. We've drifted 11 miles now and John has been on the fish 4 and 1/2 hours! It looks like the fish is dying, since we've been trying to pull her backwards, but she still keeps swimming. The fish makes one last dive, down to 700', luckily not the bottom again, and then races back up. I look at the clock and realize we've been on the fish 5 hours. Before I know it the fish is at the back of the boat, I run back, throw the harpoon in her, hit her with a straight gaff, Pam hands both Matt and John the other gaffs, and we get all of them in the fish. But she isn't done yet. For 5 minutes she kicks and throws water everywhere next to the boat. Finally the fish is subdued and we bring her through the door. It was the hardest fight I've ever seen on a swordfish. The fish was hooked in the anal fin, but John and Pam had good luck and somehow it stayed in the whole time. We steam for home, everybody exhausted and make the call to fire up the forklift. We hit the dock and the fish weighs in at 455 lbs! This is one of the biggest swordfish ever caught on rod and reel in the Florida Keys! We also fished the day before and went 2 for 3 on swordfish, keeping a 65 lber and releasing another. This is the place for Daytime Swordfishing!

450 lb Daytime Swordfish caught in Islamorada, FL!

For my brother, Capt. Nick Stanczyk aboard the "BnM" out of Bud n' Mary's Marina in Islamorada, Florida, it started out just like any summer day. We caught about 20 schoolie size mahi (3 to 5 lbs), then stopped at one of the humps and caught a 20 lb almaco jack. After that Dean wanted to put his time in for a swordfish, so the Florida Swordfish Charter began. We ran out another 15 miles, sent a bait to the bottom, and starting drifting. We drifted for an hour then checked the bait, it was a little chewed up, but not by swordfish. I told him not to get discouraged, we still had plenty of time. We ran back, sent a fresh bait to the bottom, and after about 10 minutes I saw a bite. Dean started winding, the weight broke off, and the fish raced for the surface. After about 25 minutes of winding, the swordfish broke water, and made a spectacular jump. I told him it was a big fish, somewhere between 300-400 lbs. We get the fish near the boat, but something is wrong, the bait and hook are twisted up in the line right at the rod tip, and the fish is still 40 feet away!... The sword had attacked one of the LP LIGHTS! She just had the leader wrapped up around her bill! The fish swims a few circles around the boat, and then heads to the bottom. We were in 1600' of water, but the fish gets a big belly in the line, and manages to take off a total of 2500'! The fish drowns after an hour, and we could feel dead weight. We start inching the big fish up, and after a total fight of 4 hours, we sink the gaffs into her. The fish had a lower jaw fork length of 103''! Great job Dean! Congrats on your first Broadbill Swordfish! We steam for the dock, make the call to fire up the forklift, and up comes the big sword. The fish weighed in at 450 lbs! It's one of the biggest swordfish ever caught in the Florida Keys on rod and reel! Great day on this Florida Fishing Charter!

4/7/11 BIG 700 lb Tiger Shark in Islamorada, FL Bud n' Mary's!

The past few years my friend Jon Patten from England has come over in search of big fish. Last year he caught 3 broadbill swordfish with me and mentioned he had always wanted to catch a big tiger shark. I told him April would be his best bet, but there was no guarantee. When Jon showed up this morning for his Islamorada Fishing Trip he was stoked. At 7 a.m. we headed offshore in search for a sea monster. Jon managed to catch a 40 lb amberjack right away and we sent it down for a big shark. We drifted about an hour with no bite. I told him we should try to catch a few blackfin tuna for dinner, so we put our kite up and managed to catch a handful of nice tuna up to 25 lbs. He said he still wanted that shark though, more than anything. So we sent down a butterfly jig, and 20 minutes later Jon brought up another amberjack, about 45 lbs. We hooked it on for bait, drifted the area, but no bites. Things were starting to look slim as far as the shark was concerned. We wound up catching a 10 tunas in total, and then decided to put one more shark bait down. We drifted about 3/4 of a mile and I said "Jon, today might not be our day." Next thing I know, we snagged the bottom! Or so I thought. The rod started bouncing, and drag started to scream. It was the sea monster Jon had waited to do battle with. We strapped him in the chair, bumped up the drag, and sent Jon to work. After 90 minutes Jon had the beast boatside. We estimated the tiger shark at 700+ lbs!!! After getting some good pictures, we released the giant fish, and Jon said it was the best fish he'd ever caught. It was an exciting Florida Keys Fishing Charter today aboard the BNM. Great time on this Florida Fishing Charter!

billfish question

though it's not "North America" thought i might get some feedback to the question:

Where would one go for the best offshore fishing in western mexico?? Cabo, puerta Vallarta, or mazatlan or am i missing a lesser known gem. billfish and tuna would be the prime targets. I'd like to take my dad down for the trip of a lifetime-any feedback would help-thanks

Drop shot Vs Cali Halibut killer

Hey everyone,
I have a "killer" way to nail one of the hardest fish to land. If you are into drop shot try this.

1) Take a "lead head" 1/4 oz cut head off of Live bait insert bait (As you would for a swim bait) cast and very slowly real and pop off bottom (about 4" to 6"). Placment for you bait is everything for this fish. Look for a drop off and pull your bait up the drop off poping slowly.

2) The other way i have found is. Keep live baits head on, hook the 1/4oz "lead head" through the head (going from bottom to top of head) . Be sure you do not hit the brain of the fish, the bait will last much longer. After this is done cats out about 10' to 12' (keep bait close to boat less chance to loose fish) do not pop off bottom, drag the sand slowly. *Note* DO NOT SET HOOK. LET THE HOOK DO THE WORK!!!

Items you will need:
1) 1/4oz lead head
2) Open reel with a 5' to 6' rod with 6 to 12 lbs test
3) Live bait (Smelt works best for this app.)
4) Small craft (Float tube/ small boat)
5) and last you must and i mean must have fun!

*Note* This app works best for bays and inlet, Brackish water ways. during Per and Post spawn
Be sure if fishing in So. Cali please know how to identify male and female and size restrictions. I will cost you alot of cash if you dont. 22'' limit for So cal. Release Female fish back when possible for more fish later.

Thanks for reading, and please repost to let me know how it worked for you.
