First of the Year

Got out today to the canal near Washington's Crossing, and suprisingly got my first trout of the year on a crappie crankbait. I got this one and lost one much bigger then this. I also picked up a small bass. Not to bad for a little over a 1/2 an hour on the water.

Salmon Eggs

I live in Pa and fish streams for trout. What are your techniques for using salmon eggs? I have only ever tried them a couple times and caught nothing. I usually use butter worms, meal worms, red worms and spinners. Always hear people catching them on salmon eggs. Also, do they work for other species or just trout?

Fly caught PB rainbow

I know that not a lot of people fly fish for trout, but in the last few years that I have picked up fly fishing, my catch numbers and sizes have been incredible. I have never caught as many large trout on bait or spinners that I do on my own hand tied flies. Here's just my latest catch.

Wow, what a way to start the new year. My wife and I picked up a friend
and his wife and headed to the local river for an afternoon of fly
fishing. I have a new 10' 4wt Czech nymphing rod that I was just dying
to try out. Everybody rigged up and we stepped down to the river. Air
temp was about 55 with sunny skies. Water temp, a lot colder (I don't
check the water temps). Anyways, I rigged up with a size 24 zebra midge
and a size 16 gold beaded hare's ear nymph (we tie our own flies). My
wife's set-up was about identical as these are our go-to rigs for winter
fishing these large rainbows. Now, an average catch will be around 14"
to 16". Some go smaller and some go up to 20" and even 22". But,
imagine my surprise when I hook into this 24" torpedo on my second
cast. My wife caught a glimpse of a large rainbow rolling and pointed
at it and I told her I was already hooked up to it. I fought it hard
and it fought valiantly with my wife standing at the ready with her
net. I didn't realize my biddy was standing up on shore (he and his
wife took a little longer getting set-up back at the van) video taping
the battle on his I-phone (which he later posted to You-Tube). Once it
hit the net, the barbless midge easily popped off its gums. We quickly
taped it at 24" and took a couple of quick pics before releasing it back
to fight another day. This ties the largest trout I ever caught on a
fly rod from last Super Bowl Sunday and now it will be a small goal to
try and best it throughout the year. Maybe on our Alaska trip in
July???

Kwikfish or Flatfish?

OK, this river fishing for migrating chinook salmon in the Sacramento River is very new to me. I was introduced to it last week by a friend (took my boat, he caught two while jigging) and now my wife and daughter want to go. We're making a weekend out of it on the 28-30 Sept, hopefully during the midst of the salmon run. However, still buying tackle and I'm running into the dilemma of buying Kwikfish or Flatfish. I have never used either, but reports are telling me they're very successful when "back-trolling" or at anchor and when wrapped in sardine fillets. This is all still new to me. So, the question is, have you a specific style, size or color that works well for you? Thanks.
Curing salmon roe

We fished the Sacramento River a couple of days ago and caught two healthy chinook salmon, 17# and 15#. Both were still very chrome in color. The run is just starting and while most of the fishermen we talked to came up empty handed, we apparently did alright with just two. Anyways, one of the salmon was full of roe (you can guess what the other one had), so we took the roe and put it in a ziplock baggie and put it on ice. We were jigging for these but was wanting to cure the roe for our next trip in a couple of weeks. Does anyone know how to cure roe? I'm sure recipes are all over the internet, but wanted to know if anyone here had a special way of doing it.
i have these little spoons, one is called a p-chip and the other is a nitti 1. i used them at the tail end of the trout season this year and lost a couple on it but didn't catch any. I was just wondering, should this be one of my top baits to throw next season.

Stream fishing rights??

Just looking for others thoughts on wading in streams that run behind private property. Here in NY I think the owners own the stream bed as well. Makes it kind of tough to fish if you have to ask permission from maybe several land owners to walk a stretch of stream. And I believe this is the case even if you enter the stream on public property and there are no posted signs....Just curious

Steelhead On Fire Lake Erie

Hi all, we were out 14 miles fishing walleye and just about limited out for three guys, well we hooked into a steelhead and lost it so after we got the last eye I thought man this is early to see the steelhead, we usually dont really start even looking for them until more towards the end of July but I decided to run over to my favorite area and sure enough there were fish everywhere, I switched all the rods over to spoons and dypsie, dropped the riggers down and the games were on. we hooked up with 50+ steelhead in three trips the week of the fourth. I am hoping to get out Friday evening to see if they are still around, odds are they will be in Wheatly or Erieu shortly. Great Fun when you can get into em.

I want to take my boat up to Lake Tahoe this summer and troll for lake trout (or mackinaws) and I know you have to set your down riggers to 180' to 200' of water to get down to the schools. However, I'm not sure what type of spoons or plugs to use. Does anybody troll for lake trout and have any suggestions?
First Trout Ever!!!!

OK, for about 2 years the biggest fishing chip on my shoulder has been the fact that I have never caught a trout. I did research, asked around these very forums many times, asked around at the pond, still to no avail. Well today with the sun setting on a beautiful (rare) 70 degree day a gorgeous brook trout struck my Rainbow Trout colored Acme Cleo spoon on the last cast of the day. Definitely the greatest catch of my life, it wasn't huge but it was my first trout and I am beyond excited to be able to say that I have now caught one of the most "educated" fish in my home waters.

PS anyone want to give me a quick tip on how to get a picture of the beauty up?

Stocked Rainbow Question?

Does anyone know what size a lake has to be in order for stocked trout to live year long? I'd imagine depth plays a major role, but besides that, I am clueless. I am pretty new to trout fishing, and have never caught a trout that wasn't stocked.
Lake: 25 acres.
Depth: 40 feet in certain areas.
I'm only asking this question to see if there may be some nice sized fish in a few years, or should I get used to the current stocked size? Any other info on these fish would also be greatly appreciated. Ie: habitat. Thanks in advance.
