Hey folks. New to the club. Been hooked, no pun intended, on fishin' since my grandpa put a cane pole in my hand when I was 5 at a stock pond on the Murchison's property in Athens, Texas. It's been 40 years since then and I'm still happiest when I have line in the water. Can't wait to check out the site and read the forum.

Randy

New member for the fishing side

Hello, new member here. Some here may know me from the NAHC. My name is
Jim Graham (also known as Spooky from my days in 16th SOW (now back to
1st SOW) intelligence AND a bar triva player...I was trying to decide on
a name, and as usual, had on my shirt from work, that has the Intel spook
and "INTEL" on the back---someone shouted "Spooky" and it stuck). Note
that the "GT" in GTbrewer is "Graham's Tavern" ... aka my brewery
(three-tier system outside) and my keg fridge in my kitchen). I do not
go by GT.

Most of my fishing experience is fishing with a cast net from a bridge or
a dock. My first bridge net (now retired as it's too old and worn out)
was an 13.5 foot, 18.5 pound cast net (btw, I only made brail nets
(NEVER a bag net---I've seen people using bag nets, and losing over half
of their catch as it was too big for the bag part of the net). My
half-finished bridge net will be one pound lighter and the same size,
IF I ever get the lead melting pot to make the weights for the lead line
(oh, and the mold to make them, too). The old ones weren't mine.

My dock net was, and still is, a 10.5 foot 12 pound net. I've now
upgraded it to an undersized bridge net with the handline from the
retired bridge net.

This year, I plan to buy a "normal" rod and reel (as opposed to the
"spinning" reel where you have to control the line with your
thumb---every time I fish with one of those, I get it tanged at least
twice.... I'll be fishing from the same bridges either way, but
obviously, with the rod/reel, not for mullet.

Btw, around here, the bottom is all sand, and mullet are most definitely
not a trash fish as they are where the bottom is mud. They still require
proper handling from the net to the plate[1], but that's another story.

Favorites (cast net fishing, in no particular order): mullet, speck,
and sheepshead (remove skin before smoking or it's too oily). I've
never managed to keep a redfish in the net, but I suspect it'd be a
favorite, too.

Later,
   --jim

[1] IMMEDAITELY when caught, straight into a bucket of water right out of
the guld plus ice jugs; while cleaning, keep the meat clean and out
of bloody water; keep fish/meat in clean (fresh) water with ice jugs
at all times when not handling; if not cooking right away, freeze in
a freezer bag filled with fresh water and a bit of salt---flatten as
much as possible for fast freezing/thawing. Salt the fillet for
20 minutes if frying, then shake in bag with white corn meal, then
fry in HOT peanut oil, and do NOT overcook. The small silver mullet
are best for frying, and go great with eggs and grits or hash browns
for breakfast. The big black mullet are best grilled or smoked (and
if smoked, they're great for making mullet dip).

New Member from Central New York

Hello all! I just mailed out my membership due to North American Fishing Club Friday night and am looking forward to learning new stuff. A little about myself. My name is Tom and am 47 yrs old. I live in Utica, New York This past month while my family were still on vacation, I finally promised to take my 9 year old son fishing for the first time this year. (The last couple years I kept putting it off for one reason or another.)

Anyways. I took him to Lock 20 in Marcy, NY using the same fishing pole and reel that belonged to my grandfather, the same rod and reel I caught my first fish when I was around his age. Here are a couple pics of his first fishing outing:

My son waiting for his first bite:

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/4/img2183xo.jpg/

My son with his first fish using my grandfather's rod and reel:

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/854/img2184m.jpg/

Since my son's first fishing outing, I have forgotten how much fun it is to go fishing. Lately he's been catching nothing but Bluegills. Now he wants so see some live action - his wish is catch Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Pike and other species.

I have gone out and bought him a nice rod and reel combo which he loves and have gone out and bought myself a rod and reel combo shortly after he got his. With the fishing season coming to a close in NY State, I have been buying different lures, hooks, and such. I also bought a new tackle box since the one belonged to my grandfather was a simple metal box and a mess to sort through when changing lures, hooks, etc...

With fishing interest being renewed, I am overwhelmed and confused by many different lures and baits, different hook sizes and shapes, and what works best to catch bass, walleyes, pike, etc... I'm pretty much clueless on how to rig a line (Texas rig, Carolina rigs, drop shots, how to rig the lure on a hook for weedless situations, etc... Well you get the idea.

I am looking forward to learning about fishing I never knew about since my childhood days during the 70's. I certainly do want to stop overspending by buying too many lures. So far I have bought Mepps Black Fury, Tunder Bug, Agilia (all treble hook dressed), some minnow lures with hooks, and a couple spinnerbaits. Heck I don't even know by casting the line and retrieving it to shore is getting me any bites. BTW - I don't own a boat so most of my fishing is from shore. He's already busting my chops about buying a canoe/boat so we can "go out in deep water where the big fish are."

Hello everyone. I just joined the club. I'm retired and now have time to fish. I haven't done that in 30 years. I live in Warsaw, Mo. on Lake of the Ozarks. I can literally walk out my back door, stumble down the hillside, and fish off my dock. Or, I can get in my kayak, paddle around and find a relaxing spot to fish. I look forward to learning how to fish like the real fisherman do! Life is good on the water.

Conyak
