Hi there to all members. I am planning on starting up surf fishing this year and was wondering if anyone of you would have any good suggestions on what gear I should get to start. Any suggestions on what bait and lures I should try using would really be appreciated. Thanks for all your help.

Trophy life member since 2003

Delaware Lakes and Ponds Report October 2009

Ive been very busy recently with work but glad to see the site is doing
well and I'm excited about the information sharing potential especially
among my fellow northeast anglers. It can help to point each other in
the right direction when you only have a few hrs. to get out on the
water

I've managed to get out almost every day for the
last 10 days and let me tell you the action has gone from very steady
to flat out on fire as the week progressed.

Water seems to be around that magical 60 degree mark in almost every pond or lake Ive hit.

Vegetation
is still present and healthy but has thinned out enough that every spot
can be worked properly with any type of bait. Bass are slamming
anything with a vengence as long as it moves quickly.

Ive
nailed less than a handful of bass on slow presentations but well over
two hundred on faster search baits or coverage lures.Even though these
faster baits have allowed me to cover the entire ponds or lakes in
short order the bass are beginning to bunch up and seem to be a few
weeks ahead of schedule as far as schooling up in large numbers in
small areas goes

I've been catching almost all my bass in 2
or 3 distinct spots on each body of water from small side of the road
bank fishing ponds to lakes like Noxontown, Canal pond and Lums the
bass have been bunched up.

While the cover available varies from
pond to pond each spot generally consists of the edge of a flat that
meets deep water on a ledge or where the creek channel swings up tight
to the bank with deep water close by.

Remember deep is a relative term to the lake you're fishing. On some it may be 4 or 5 ft. while others 20 or 30.

Mix
in grass wood, rock or pads and you've found the spot. All of these
ponds have plenty of cover but there's generally only a few spots that
offer this type of structure with it. Generally these spots aren't to
far away from where you catch your winter bass in the deepest parts of
the pond or lake. So those are good starting points to start your
search and just look for these structures within a few hundred yards of
those deep winter holes because these bass will stay on these drops
until the water finally gets to cold and drives them to the deep holes
but they don't want to go far, so look close to were you catch em in
the winter baits. The schools have been laying out off the drop and it
seems like all day they move in and out sometimes just a couple at a
time and other times 5,10 and even 20 at a time.

They feed for a couple minutes AGRESSIVELY and then move back out.

This
is Delaware's version of schooling bass .I've thrown slower baits like
jigs, senkos, beavers shaky heads and drop shots but the bass have
shown no where near the interest towards those as they have to
Chatterbaits burnt erratictally through wood, pads and grass on the
bank or spinnerbaits in tandem burnt and twitched in the same
areas.Square bill cranks rooted and bounced off the bottom an cover
have produced viscious strikes and traps speed reeled with pumps and
rips have scored as well. Mix in a buzzbait to show the bass something
different and to sometimes pick up a larger fish at times, and it
doesn't have to be low light or cloud cover as they slam it in the
bright sun. The past week truly has been junk fishing catch 4 or 5 on a
bait and then when the fish get wary to the bait and the action slows
change baits and it starts again.

Over time the numbers
dwindle as you run out of new baits to show them and then you go hit
the other 1 or 2 spots just like it you've found around the lake, and
when you come back a fresh school has pulled up, and the fun begins
all over again.

I was able to catch a few nicer bass working
cranks that run in the 6 to 8 ft range off the ledge out in the deep
water where the unagressive bass are holding. I had to do this on 1 of
the ponds because I was only able to find one of these "grouping areas"
on that lake so I had to figure out how to catch em when the school
died down, but if you simply wait them out a new wolfpack moves up.

Enjoy
this fun while it lasts because in about 2 to 3 weeks it will end and
then it will be time to catch some of the biggest fish of the year on a
whole new pattern.

But for pure numbers and fun to me
this is the best time of the year. So enjoy. Find yourself a grouping
area with a school of bass and remember they'll slam almost anything
right now as long as its fast and erratic. This pattern will last from
sun up to sun down. I've sat a whole day before on one or two spots
this time of year and caught fish all day long sometimes as many as 100
between 3 of us in the boat.

More info at Northeast Bass Fishing For Trophy Bass

Northeast Bass Fishing For Trophy Bass

Big Bass In Delaware For The Fall

I first met Bill Seimantel, who was just voted into the Freshwater
Fishing Hall Of fame this year, when I was competing at Table Rock Lake
in 1998 for the Big Bass World Championship, the following year he was
my brothers room mate in the same tournament. We learned a lot of great
techniques from bill during this time and in the future. He really
turned me on to using swimbaits back east for trophy bass when not many
if any other people were doing this. The things he told us then have
accounted for numerous trophy bass on swimbaits that approched the
state record. He is a great guy and a real trophy bass hunter. I have
some videos of Bill teaching all the things you need to know about
swimbaits including tackle, baits and big bass being caught if you want
to watch them. They are free as usual. Tight lines, Steve

BIG BASS ON SWIMBAITS

Northeast Bass Fishing For Trophy Bass

Hot Weather Bass In Delaware (Tips)

Some of the best ponds during the heat, day or night, have been Millsboro, Killens, and Canal pond.
First of the closest ponds to both upper and lower Delaware is Killens in Dover. Killens is located right off rt.13. Turn left onto State Park Road, follow the road around the curve, past the main park entrance, and about a mile and a half down the road is the pond. It has parking for about six to eight trucks with trailers, with an adequate launching ramp. Killens is a state park, and they also rent boats and cabins, but you will find little competition for bass except on the weekends.

Most of Killens is one to five feet deep at the shoreline, except in the extreme upper end, where it is just inches deep. The lake has an Island in the center with some wood cover and grass. It drops off to six feet quickly on the channel side (main lake), and is about three feet on the right side. This is a particularly good area to work in the day with "Senko's" in four and five inch sizes in black and watermelon on a 3/0 WG hook, with eight and ten pound test line. In addition, clacker type buzzbaits produce bass in the three to six pound range many times in this area, even in the bright afternoon sun.

A Tournament Frog, or "Sumo Frog" is a good choice for the pads especially in the daytime heat. The action will be slower, but you can connect with some big explosions through the grass and pads at times. A Tournament Frog is the best choice of topwater, and a 1/2 ounce in black works best all around. Vary the retrieve, both day and night, sometimes letting the frog sit after hitting the water, as long as thirty seconds, then use a few quick hops. If this doesn't produce, try working it very fast and pausing only once, on the way back to the boat. This is especially effective in large pads.

Jigs in black and blue take their fair share of nice bass from here also, but you must be extremely accurate and quiet in your presentations or you will not connect. The bass will be in the heaviest of cover, lying in wait for a slow moving, crippled bait to come overhead.

"GO AT NIGHT"

Fishing at night when the water cools to seventy or seventy-five degrees, is the best time to connect with bigger bass now. Explore the shallow water right at the drop-offs on the left side of the lake with buzzbaits cast to the main channel edge. Do not be afraid to experiment with some older, forgotten baits, such as a "Devils Horse", or similar prop baits. They work wonders sometimes in highly pressured lakes.

MILLSBORO POND
Millsboro Pond is in Sussex County, Delaware, in the town of Millsboro off Isabella and Main Street. It has room for only a few boats, and the launching ramp is very shallow, you can get off all right, but getting back on the trailer can be real tricky. Most of the lake is shallow, with lots of grass. It has several Islands, but the bass go to shallow water at night in the upper end. Buzzbaits are best, but Tournament Frogs work well also, in the day and night. Several bass have been caught in the three to six pound range in the past at night, using the frog and Senko's mostly in the day. Cast the buzzbait wherever possible at night, it is worth removing the grass. Use Senko's by the lower end of the lake in deeper water in the day, and do not forget to let them sit a long time, raise the pole once or twice, and then cast again. Use these techniques and bring plenty of insect repellent, and you will connect with some lunkers, and many others in the two to three pound range.

CANAL POND
Canal Pond is located by the railroad bridge in the C&D Canal area. Turn right under St.Georges Bridge and follow the road to the pond. It has beautiful structure, pads, and has a deep shoreline with a deep hole. This was where a few years ago, the thirty pound landlocked striped bass was caught. There are some real Lunker largemouth's still there also. You will need a small cartop boat to fish it, but it is worth the trouble of getting in. It is about thirty acres of real good drop-offs, and structure, where bass up to nine pounds have been caught. Please remember to practice Catch, Photo, and Release so we can all enjoy the bass fishing there for a long time to come. Senko's and four inch straight tailed worms work best throughout the year in watermelon and green. At times spinnerbaits and frogs will work, but this is a plastics lake.
Noxontown Lake
Noxontown has long been known for producing big bass. In the late seventies and early eighties largemouth of seven and eight pounds were not uncommon to hear of each week.

Since that time, with all the recreational and tournament pressure, its big bass numbers seem to have declined, or have they?

The answer is no! They are still there, just older and wiser. This was proven when I caught a 10.16 pound largemouth bass in 1999 in Noxontown, just ounces short of the state record.

That bass was featured in a full page article in the News Journal paper, in Bassmaster Magazine Lunker Club, North American Fisherman, and Bass Pro Shops Master catalogs.

The trick to getting these larger bass to strike is to fish the lake at low pressure times during the weekdays, and employing some western techniques such as swimbaits off the deeper points. Just because they are northern strain bass and aren't 20 pounds, it doesn't mean they don't want a big easy meal.
Follow these tips and tactics in these Delaware Lakes and Ponds this year, and you will catch the trophy of a lifetime!
Nanticoke River Hotspots

Nanticoke River Hotspots

LOCATION AND RAMPS

The Nanticoke River is located in both Delaware and Maryland, and runs through several small towns all the way to the Chesapeake Bay. There are two ramps that you can access from Delaware. Phillips landing is the most popular. It has a big parking lot with room for about 30 boats and trailers. It has two ramps that can be reached by taking rt.13a to the town of Bethel, going over the Bethel bridges, and past the Bethel hole to Portsville. Take your second right after Portsville Pond, and follow the signs to Phillips landing. The other ramp can be reached by turning off rt.13, and taking rt. #20 west, down to Shipley Street in Seaford, and following the green signs to the launching ramp. There are restroom facilities, and room for about 40 trailers. There are two ramps there with deep water and good docks.

LOCATIONS AND LURES

The best location to start searching depends on the time of the year. In the spring from April to the end of May, launch at Phillips landing, and head to the right towards Broad Creek. About 1/4 mile up, past the lily pads on the left hand side, is a series of laydowns, and underwater boulders. The sun hits this area all day, and warms the water up a few degrees more than the rest of the area. Start working all the visible structure, laydowns, etc.with a fast moving bait such as a 3/8 ounce Terminator Spinnerbait in chartruese/white, with tandem blades.

If you don't get any takers in a short time, rework the same area with a crankbait parallel to the pads and in the wood. You should have a spider grub rigged on a spinning rod also, with 6-8 pound test line. Brown/orange or watermelon are a good choice. If you can't locate any bass in this area, then continue up into Broad Creek, all the way towards the Bethel Hole. Work the bridge pilings and the wood on the turn before the Bethel Hole, with a black/blue tube bait, jig, and a buzzbait. If these locations fail to produce, turn on the outboard and head back towards Phillips Landing.

Proceed past the ramps, and make a turn at the main channel towards the Woodland Ferry. There will be a series of docks and pilings a short distance before the Woodland ferry that should be worked well with a buzzbait and spinnerbait, then move in closer and flip a black/blue jig or a Senko. After working these docks, cross over to the entrance of the creek, and work the mouth with a spinnerbait and a buzzbait, then work all the wood with a jig and a Senko. Next, move down to the Ferry crossing, and throw small worms and Senkos right up against the sea wall, being careful of the ferry and the cable. After leaving this area, head up river towards Maryland to the next major creek on your right. There is a lot of wood there that should be worked thoroughly with spinnerbaits and buzzbaits first, then rework the same area with the jig and Senko. Many times while searching for bass here you will run into some decent size Stripers.

BEST TIMES

The best time to work these areas is the first two hours of the incoming tide, and the last two hours of the outgoing tide. Three days prior to a new moon in April are best, but other times produce with a little patience. Many 2-3 pound bass are caught in this area.

WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS

When all else fails, run up into "Broad Creek," on either tide, and work the Bethel hole with tube baits and Senkos cast directly up on the bank and then pull them slowly into the water. This is a bass spawning area, and only one of a few on the river, so be respectful, and practice catch and release.

BAIT STORES AND LICENSE

A&K tackle has a variety of lures and bait, and are open year round You don't need a freshwater license in Delaware to fish tidewater, but you need both a Freshwater and Bay Sport license in Maryland. The weekends will have a lot of boat traffic, jet skis and the like, but all in all, most people are pretty respectful. There is a variety of wildlife along the river to enjoy, so take the whole family sometimes. It will keep them occupied all day.

To find out more bass fishing secrets click the link below.

Old School Bass Fishing Family Secrets

1998 Big Bass World Champ
