Umpqua River

I have spent a few days on the Umpqua within the last week. I am glad to report that the salmon fishing is still good near Reedsport. It can be a little hit and miss, but if you put the time in you should not be leaving empty handed. I have caught at least one every trip out so far this year. The only negative is that a large number of the fish in the river this year are jacks. The crabbing has slowed a bit, going from unreal to just good. Still expect a quick limit if you are crabbing out of a boat, but not off of the pier. If you do crab off of the pier, go at night. It will up your odds of getting some nice crab, maybe even a limit. Hope someone who can use this sees it. I'm not so sure if many of us Oregonians are on here.

Hello Fellow Oregonians!

In honor of my favorite time of year I thought I would see if there are any of you who use these forums. How is eveyone's fall salmon season going? I have seen real promise thus far. There are plenty of fish to be caught right now and we are not even in prime time yet. Many rivers are also being opened for a native coho season again. I fish the Umpqua and Siuslaw by the way. I have only been fishing the Umpqua so far as it is a little early for the Siuslaw at this point. I am happy to say that it has been a productive August and I am looking forward to September. Tight lines eveyone!

First fishing trip of the year and first trip ever to Oregon!

I recently had the pleasure of traveling to the state of Oregon to visit my sister. She lives on the Oregon Coast and lives a few hundred yards from a freshwater lake called Lake Cullaby. This trip took place about 3 weeks ago so the bass bite was NONEXISTENT! Still way too cold in Oregon. I fished for hours for the bass but eventually I decided to utilize my time better (As the bass were not interested) and start fishing for the steelhead in the lake.
I know, I know. The fish is small. But hey, it was the first one of the year so to me it was beautiful! The lake was dead. I didn't see a fish jump the whole week I was there. It took me hours of patient and dedicated fishing to catch just this one fish. I let him go to grow bigger. I was here for the sport.
I eventually turned my sights to night fishing. As it was virtually impossible to catch anything during the day. I fished the stream that fed off of the lake called Cullaby Creek and looked what I pulled in! A nice little Bullhead catfish!
Ugly little sucker ain't he!? I put him back in the stream and set my rig back up. Now, I don't know when catfish spawn, but they must have had recently spawned because I caught about 15 of these little guys!
Smallest catfish I have ever seen!
The next night, look what I pulled in! A big ol' perch! We didn't even know there were perch in this creek. Let alone perch of that size.
The next night I caught a few more decent perch.

All in all it was a very good trip. I didn't haul in any "monsters" this time, but fishing is fishing. I am happy to catch anything! And to be able to travel to Oregon, a state in which I had never been to before, and fish in "uncharted" waters, was a unique experience that I won't forget!
Moving to Oregon

Hey everyone, So I am moving to Hillsboro, Oregon and was wondering if anyone could give me some info on fishing the area. I have been on the Fish and Wildlife site and got the basics. I have been fly fishing for trophy trout in southeastern Idaho/Yellowstone area for about 6 years now, but salmon fishing is going to be a new ball game. Any info or willingness to take me out on the river would be great.

I was wondering if there is anyone in the Central Oregon area that would be interested in going out on some fishing adventures. I mostly fish on the high desert lakes and the upper Deschutes. Although I have gone fishing over a large section of the State of Oregon, lately I have been staying closer to home. I work full time so most of my outings are on the weekends. Most of the time I go fishing in the spring, summer and fall since almost everything is froze over and closed here during the winter. I own 4 boats, well 3 boats and a project (22 foot 1940’s restoration) none of them are new (newest is a 1995 Alumacraft Dominator CS with a 50HP Nissan) or fancy but they are clean, reliable and are comfortable. They range from an 18 foot bass boat to a 28 foot cabin cruiser. I will admit things have been difficult lately so the only boat that is fully geared up and ready is my bass boat. The others are in need of a few repairs. I am not too bothered by the cost of going out and I have plenty of gear, but like many people my family does not want me to go alone anymore. If members of the club in the area are interested they can send a private message then I would be happy to share my contact information.

Bill

NAFC life member since 1992, NAHC life member since 2005, lifetime Oregon resident.
Get well for Just Dave

I just got off the phone with Porber (Matt Worland). He and JustDave were heading out today for some steelhead fishing. Dave fell and broke his leg. I am not sure if there was a banana on the trip. Dave, hope you have a speedy recovery and well soon to get back out on the water.

Northern Pike heading your way!

The Pend Orellie River in the North east corner of Washington State has become a Pike hot spot.
Some folks want to manage this water for trouphy Pike while others want them gone.
As the Pend Orellie flows into the Columbia, I was wondering how our neighbors in Oregon feel about this.
There have allready been some Pike caught in lake Roosevelt and should they get into the Columbia Basin irrigation project they will be able to get in the Snake. There seems to be little concern for those of us that live down stream.
There is a ongoing discussion at washingtonlakes.com,

Thanks for your time.

Time to hit the Rivers

There have been a lot of Salmon in tidewater, both Coho and Chinook. With the recent early rain, they should be making a move into the fresh water on the coastal rivers. If you're targeting Coho, #4 Blue Fox spinner in pink will do the trick. If you;re targeting the Chinook, eggs and sand shrimp under a bobber is a good way to go. If you;re in a boat, qwik fish in Chartruese wrapped with sardine is a killer combination. Good luck

JustDave

Bass in Grants Pass/Medford

Hello all I am fairly new to the area and am an avid bass fisherman but other than a few smaller areas and one or two lakes I would like to know of other hot spots to do some catching So far the best and biggest have been out of the Jackson Co. expo ponds of all places and some decent fishing on Lake Selmac too, but with my boat in storage pond fishing has got my attention and am open to trying anywhere I can. I would also love to meet up with someone to go fishing with since I am solo most of the time except when my daughter wants to go. Anyway any response would be great and good catching to you all
