U S Forest Service Draining Day Lake Flowage

I found out that the U S Forest Service Plans to lower the water level of the Day Lake Flowage this fall by 8 feet. This lake has an average depth of 6 feet or so outside the river channel. After fishing this lake since 1974, the deepest water we have ever found is 17 feet deep. The Forest Service claims they are doing this to allow the weeds to be frozen out. Now it seems to me that any lake that shallow is going to have weeds and they will grow back if you cut, freeze or poison them. Now for what I beleive is the worst part about this. This lake has a large number of small musky, and a even larger number of big bass. We catch 20 to 30 bass a day and catch many over 16" with several each year over 20". What will happen to these fish during the winter after a draw down, if any of them make it out of the shallow pockets before getting trapped.

Sounds like another waste of Federal Tax dollars.......

Protect the Second Amendment, without it there is no Constitution.
Wolf River fishing in Fremont

Anybody have any updates as to how the fish are biting on the Wolf? A friend and I are planning a trip there later this month in the latter part of the 3rd week of April and wondering if the latest cool weather has put a damper on the fishing. We have never been there before so I would also need to find a nice boat ramp. Mostly looking for white bass but don't really care what is biting. Is everything open on the wolf as far as catching and keeping fish? Are there any obstacles to worry about on the river itself such as stumps or rocks to hit? Thanks for the help.
sturgeon tagging

Geona, WI-

Nine Volunteers tag close to 1,100 sturgeon at the Genoa Fish
Hatchery on April 2. The sturgeon are assigned for the Chippewa Indian
Tribe in Northern Wisconsin for their tribal harvest and fishery.

“Since they have started this stocking program some years ago, the
tribe has only claimed one sturgeon.” Explains Ann, a staff member of
the U.S. Fish and Wild Life Service. There are many factors that
contribute to the poor harvest of the sturgeon. Equipment to harvest
sturgeon is very expensive and the poverty rate in Northern Wisconsin is
very high; also it has been many years and generations since the tribe
has been able to harvest sturgeon, many of the traditional ways of
sturgeon harvest are forgotten; lastly, the depth of the Chippewa lakes
are deeper than the more common sturgeon harvesting location of Lake
Winnebago. The Chippewa Nation is allowed to harvest 100 sturgeon each
year.

Tagging a sturgeon is relatively easy, the sturgeon are injected with
an electronic tag- very similar to what a pet identifier is, then the
tag is activated with a magnetic wand that assigns the tag with a
number, then the fish is released back into the fish tank. During the
tagging process, sturgeon are randomly selected to be measured. The tag
number is logged on a data sheet for future reference.

When the sturgeon are caught in the future, the agent will have a
very similar wand that will detect the tag number and the agent will
know the location and batch the sturgeon came from and the growth of the
sturgeon over time.

Nürnberger Rostbratwurst and German Potato Salad

Nürnberger Rostbratwurst

The small, thin bratwurst from Franconia's largest city, Nuremberg, was first documented in 1313; it is surprisingly small, being only 7 to 9 cm in length and weighing between 20 and 25 g. Perhaps the most popular sausage in Germany, the denominations Nürnberger Bratwurst and Nürnberger Rostbratwurst (Rost refers to the cooking grate above the flames) are Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) under EU law since 2003,[6] and may therefore only be produced in the city of Nürnberg, where an "Association for the Protection of Nürnberger Bratwürste" was established in 1997.[7]

Pork-based and typically seasoned with fresh marjoram which gives them their distinctive flavour, these sausages are traditionally grilled over a beechwood fire. As a main dish, they are served in sets of six, eight, 10 or 12 on a pewter plate (round but also frequently heart- or bell-shaped) with either sauerkraut or potato salad, and accompanied by a dollop of horseradish or mustard. They are also sold as a snack by street vendors as Drei im Weckla (three in a bun; the spelling Drei im Weggla is also common, Weggla/Weckla being the Nuremberg slang for Brötchen), with mustard being offered to spice them up to personal taste.

~Wikipedia

Nürnberger Rostbratwurst and German Potato Salad

This kind of weather makes me yearn for a small town festival in the Alps!

-Fox Lake, WI

Local youth gather on Fox Lake for a youth ice fishing clinic
sponsored by the Lost Lake Preservation Association, Best Dam Baits, and
Team USA Ice Fishing Team.

Organizers of the event were Pete Hupf of Best Dam Bait; Jim Kusuda, certified DNR instructor; and Doug Bussian of USA Ice Team.

“It all started back in October when Jim (Kusuda) gave an ice fishing
work shop.” says Sondra Olson of the Lost Lake Preservation

stewardship, and NOT TO STEP IN A HOLE.”

Jim Kusuda, a certified DNR instructor and USA Ice Team Member gave a
hands on work shop in the warming tent. “It’s nice to have these
events, the kids really learn something.”

Argo of Beaver Dam provided transportation both on and off the ice;
Best Dam Bait provided tackle and bait along with gift bags for the
youth, and Boathouse Pub and Eatery provided pizza and soda after the
event.

This was the first year for the youth clinic, and there are plans on
making the clinic an annual event. To learn more about the Lost Lake

The Next Year

Time did not stand still. The days at first were a blur. Then the
days seemed endless with memories that were so fresh that they seemed
like they happened just yesterday. The winter was the longest of my
life. There were days I would just sit on my front steps and feel
sorry for myself. Many of my Mom's friends talked to me when they came
to visit her and check on her to see if she needed anything. One of
my Aunts told me that "Time Heals All Wounds." I thought it was a stupid saying. Me being 10 years old I didn't understand what it meant really.

My
classmates at school were all very supportive. The teachers paid
special attention to me. Not many students lose their father at 10
years old. There was no grief counseling back then. I watched my
mother and saw how she handled it. She was constantly in motion. She
had my 5 sisters to tend to and she had to work three jobs at first to
make ends meet. My Father had purchased "Hunter's Insurance"
each year for the 17 years they were married to help with any financial
problems my Mother might encounter in case he died while deer
hunting. The hunting insurance did not cover natural causes. Who dies
of a heart attack at 40 years? The insurance did not cover my Dad's
death. My mother had a really hard time making ends meet the first few
months. She sold off his boat and a couple guns to make it through the
winter. We had to go on welfare that spring.

My
mother kept all the financial things from us kids. Her brother gave
her money when he could but he was raising a family himself and could
only spare so much. My mother wanted to keep our childhood as normal as
possible. She lost 25 pounds the first year. She wasn't fat to begin
with. I have never seen such a determined person in my life. She
decided she needed to be ultra healthy for us kids. She gave up
smoking. It was quite a feat. She finally looked at the price of
cigarettes and it was a no brainer in her mind.

Spring
came and we had made it over the winter hump. The oil bills for the
furnace almost did us in that first winter. I remember being covered
with 4 blankets during the night because we needed to turn down the
furnace at night. Our family really needed spring to come. The trees
budding and the world turning green again gave us all hope. I could see
hope in my mother's eyes again. She even smiled every once in a
while. Our family was healing.

It was the last week of
April. The time was special in my world. It was the weekend before
trout fishing. I went to my parent's closet to get my fishing pole
out. The closet was empty of fishing poles. There used to be the
minimum of a dozen poles in there with at least two tackle boxes
brimming with gear. They were all gone. I thought my mom must have
moved them and I went to ask her where my pole was.

Mom was in the kitchen making supper. I casually asked her where my pole was. I told her that Trout Season Opened the "First Of May"
and I needed to get my pole ready for the morning because it was
opening day in the morning. My mother seemed like she didn't hear me at
first when I asked where my pole was. I repeated my question. My mom
looked at me and told me this: "The winter almost sank the Harris
Ship." "I had to do what it took to keep us afloat." " I sold all of the fishing poles and tackle boxes to pay the heating bills."
I was ten years old and I didn't understand bills. I was very upset
that my mom had sold my fishing pole. How was I going to trout fish
without a pole and lures? I left the kitchen crying. Ten minutes later
I saw my mother leave the house and come back about an hour later.

I
went to bed and cried myself to sleep. The spring was not good for me
any more. It sucked. Opener was in the morning and I was without my
father and my fishing pole. My life just became bad again. I dreamed
about my Dad during the night. He didn't die. We were getting up at
5am like every year and going out fishing. I was happy again.

At
5am I heard my room door open. It was my uncle and he woke me up. He
told me to get dressed and get ready for fishing. I told him I didn't
have a pole. I said: "I can't fish without a pole." He
hurried me and said lets get going. I got dressed quickly. My mother
had made the traditional breakfast for the "Trout" anglers just like she
did for Dad and I each year. My uncle and I ate it up and went to
leave to go fish. We went out to the pickup to go fishing. I asked my
uncle what I was going use to fish with. He reached into the back of
the pickup and gave me my new Zebco 404 and tackle box that Mom had
purchase for me last night. I ran back to the house and gave my mom a
big hug and a kiss and told her she was the best mom in the world.

My mother "Jane Harris" with my daughter Anna on her 84th birthday a week ago. The Best Mom EVER.
