Gar in Southeast Michigan?

One of my goals for this upcoming year is to catch a Longnose Gar. Do any of you know of any good places to catch them in southeast Michigan? If so, what should I use?

i want to know what kinds of lures and baits that they bite on the best. i always see them come up to breath and evey once in a blue moon i will hook one. so if anyone could help me i would like it.

The river I fish is full of Longnose Gars. They are always stripping bait from my hooks when i catfish. Is there a way catch these fish. They have a narrow bony jaw full of sharp teeth.

This past Saturday I decided to take my little cousin fishing with me and it turns out he did a whole lot better than me… First we went carp fishing with bow and arrow, I killed a yellow one and used it as bait. My cousin killed a white one (herbivore) and took it home (that one was not for bait) and we walk around the creek and he spots a gar. At first I thought it was an average sized gar but when that thing took off boy was I surprised.

Then afterwards when we go fishing on rod and reel (with my common carp as bait) he is able to hook himself onto a smaller gar which I think kept my cousin a little entertained, it seemed as if it put up a decent fight!

As for me, I was able to get a gar take my bait, I saw my line speeding to the left of my boat and after a while a decided it was time to set the hook… I did that and retrieved very little of my line before it got stuck onto some trees underwater, I was not able to land him!

the smaller gar was released and the bigger one will become food for us!

5 foot alligator gar

Just added a few photos of a 5 foot alligator gar one of my fishing friends caught in Orange Texas on Mar 23, 2011. The photos are in my album on my profile page.

He caught it using a 6 - 7 inch finger mullet as bait.

I fish for gar and catfish in a bayou behind my house and yesterday spotted something unusual. A fish that looked like a gar hit the surface. that in itself is pretty common but this one was jet black. first i thought i was mistake but about 20 min later i saw it again. Has anyone else seen something like this and if so what is it.

well, yesterday i went out bowfishing with good ol buddy and shot at least 10 gar a piece, i know i shot 5 carp, and a few turtles. it was fun. but was it a good day. it was my first time.
