Spoon Tackle

Heavy spoons require long, stiff baitcasting rods, fast reels and heavy lines. Mark Rose opts for a 7-foot, 11-inch, heavy action G. Loomis and 20-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon.
“That long rod is great for making long casts and taking up slack line when a bass strikes,” he says. “I don’t feel comfortable with anything less than 20-pound line. I’ve snapped 15-pound test setting the hook on a spoon. Giant bass bite this bait.”
J.T. Kenny slings structure spoons a 7-foot, 6-inch, medium-action G. Loomis matched with a high-speed Abu Garcia Revo reel—also spooled with 20-pound fluoro.
A heavy-action 7-foot, 6-inch, All Pro rod with 15- to 17-pound Lake Fork Fluorohybrid line gets the nod when Dianna Clark casts a structure spoon
“You can cast a spoon a mile to schooling bass with that setup,” she says. “My 7:1 gear ratio Ardent reel helps me hammer bass fast when they bite.”</

Tommy Skarlis’s penchant for big baits doesn’t end with jigs and rigs. He also trolls with sizable crankbaits, including Lindy’s 2 7/8-inch Shadling.“This new shad bait is entirely different bait than the old Lindy Shadling,” he says. “It’s got nice side-to-side roll, it comes in holographic finishes, and it rattles.”The Shadling also comes in a smaller 2 7/16-inch No. 5 size, which Skarlis will troll in clear water and when walleye key on small baitfish. However, in murky water and when there is a forage explosion of baitfish, the bigger No. 7 Shadling draws more strikes.“I go with silver and bright colors in clean water and gold or dark colors in dirty water,” he says.</

Go-Big Tackle Tip

“Jig fishing is all offense,” says veteran walleye pro Tommy Skarlis. “When you feel a bite, you’ve got to pull the trigger immediately.”He pulls the trigger with a Fenwick Techna AV 7-foot, medium-fast spinning rod. The quick, sensitive graphite rod helps him detect light bites, as does the highly visible 10-pound Flame Green FireLine he uses for jig fishing.A stinger snell with a No. 12 or 14 hook ensures that short-striking fish wind up in the landing net. “It’s incredible how those little hooks find a piece of skin to latch onto in a walleye’s hard mouth.”When he’s pulling a sinker rig, Skarlis opts for a medium-light rod.“You have to feed walleyes with a live bait rig,” he says. “A rod with a soft tip lets you do that without the walleye feeling you.”</

Fish Ed

If you’ve ever wondered how fish react to fishing pressure, a new study on brown trout offers tantalizing clues. To gauge different responses to angling pressure between heavily fished and relatively untouched populations, biologists measured the catch and various behaviors of brown trout in two backcountry New Zealand rivers.1 A recent study suggests that being caught and released drastically changes a fish’s behavior. The Ugly River is a wilderness stream accessible only by hiking 10 hours through untracked and difficult terrain. The second site was the Owen River, which is easily accessed by road and has high fishing pressure for a backcountry river. Both are 50 to 100 feet wide, provide the same habitat, and have similar densities and size structures of brown trout.Let’s Go FishingTeams of guides and experienced fly anglers methodically fished each river on four three-day trips. In 12 days, 157 browns were caught in the Ugly River, 51 in the Owen. The fish represented 43 percent of the Ugly River’s browns and 11 percent of the Owen’s population. Fish in both rivers averaged about 3.8 pounds. Both the number of trout seen and hooked declined on successive days of each three-day trip on the Ugly, as fishing pressure pushed the browns tight into cover. Researchers allowed two to four weeks to elapse between each three-day fishing trip, and noted that trout sightings and catches returned to high levels on the first day of each trip. In other words, fish responded to angling immediately, but the effects on trout behavior disappeared after two weeks. On the more pressured Owen River, the numbers of fish seen and hooked were much lower on the first day and did not change during successive days of each trip. Also, the trout in the Ugly River were less likely to be spooked, more likely to be caught on the first cast, and overall required fewer presentations. Fish in the Owen that did not spook were more likely to remain at their feeding station while anglers cast to them. What It MeansRelatively unfished brown trout are less angler-shy and more vulnerable to capture. But the “virgin waters” effect is short-lived. As was apparent in the Ugly River, a single capture drastically changes a fish’s behavior. Whether this response is learned or has a physiological basis—such as elevated levels of stress hormones or the depletion of energy reserves after capture—is not easily determined, but the effect lasts several days. There was also a “chronic” effect of fishing in the Owen’s browns. The trout were less visible and less catchable. And, while fish occupying visible feeding stations were less likely to spook, they were also less likely to take a fly. Do these findings apply only to brown trout in New Zealand streams? I doubt it. Fish in small, clear streams are highly vulnerable, but dozens of anglers fishing even a large lake or reservoir day after day can “educate” a lot of fish.I commonly hear fisheries management colleagues who try to maintain large populations of quality fish lament the effect of “increasingly skilled anglers” and how technology has raised angler efficiency. There is little doubt that angler skill and efficiency is increasing. But we may be wrong in assuming that the fish don’t change, too. 1.Young, T.F., and J.W. Hayes. 2004.
Five Phenominal Fisheries on a Budget

Okay, so we keep hearing a lot about the tough economy. Boat sales are in the tank and some manufacturers report sales down as much as 60 percent. More than a few of the more remote and high-end fishing lodges didn't even open their doors in 2009. That's the bad news. The good? Not all is not all doom and gloom in the fishing world. Several of my colleagues in the tackle and gear business say their sales are up. Why? Because people can go fishing without spending a ton of money. That got me thinking. Where are my favorite fishing destinations? You know, the ones that won't kill the bank account? Here are five of my favorite picks.1. Bassin' and WalleyesThere are a ton of options for bass fishing in North America. Heck, more people fish for bass than any other single species. I'm all about big fish and small crowds. Exactly why Roy Lake, South Dakota comes to mind. Roy is a 1,500 acre lake created 20,000 years ago by the glaciers. It sits in the heart of what's called South Dakota's Glacial Lakes Region; an area full of walleye, bass and crappie lakes. If you like smallmouth bass fishing, there aren't a lot of lakes that compare to Roy. Jig and minnows work wonders on Roy, as do soft plastics pitched around the lake's submerged timber. Come late July and August, the topwater bite takes off. Don't be surprised if you catch a couple fish in the 5 pound range. Oh, and don't be surprised if you also hook a few nice walleyes and pike. The lake has another big lure. Roy Lake State Park surrounds a good chunk of the lake, so visitors can beach their boats and camp right next to the beach. If you're looking for fancier accommodations, Roy Lake Resort is another great option. The Numbers:
Fishing license $32 (3 day non-resident)
State Park Campsite $16 (per night)
State Park Vehicle Fee $6 (per day)
Closest Major Cities
Sioux Falls, SD 2 ½ hours
Minneapolis, MN 4 ½ 2. Trout fishingIf you're into fly fishing and the trout game, better pack your bags for Colorado. There, you can find plenty of great places to chase plenty of fish without having to pay expensive rod fees and private access rates. One of my favorite public spots is a place called Cheesman Canyon. The South Platte River runs through Cheesman Canyon just an hour from Denver and holds as many as 5,200 rainbown and brown trout per mile. If you visit, be sure to bring along your best pair of hiking boots. Anglers must hike a minimum of a mile on the Gill Trail to find good water. The key to Cheesman Canyon? Stick to small mayfly and midge patterns. The Numbers:
Fishing License: $21 (5 day non-resident)
1 Pair hiking boots $100
Closest Major City: Denver 60 minutes
 3. Saltwater OasisIf you're looking for saltwater action without the hassle or price of a big-time fishing trip, then you need to check out the Padre Island National Seashore just outside of Corpus Christi, Texas. Anglers there have access to nearly 70 miles of beach along the Gulf Coast. Here's the catch. The National Seashore is open to cars and trucks. Locals cruise the beach, looking for feeding Pelicans. If you find the birds, you'll find the baitfish and the feeding sea trout, pompano, drum and crevalle jacks. On my last trip, surf casting Berkley Gulp on a long-shank jig worked like a charm. If you'd like to up the ante, you can hire a local guide and fish for sharks from the beach. Be warned, even a small five foot black tip will turn your arms to rubber. The Numbers:
Fishing License: $16 (non-resident per day)
$10 Saltwater stamp
$10 Beach access charge per vehicleClosest City
Corpus Christi 15 minutes 4. A Winter Getaway
See more at jacobgibb.com.I may be a little bit biased, but the Mississippi River runs darn near through my backyard, just north and west of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Come the snowy season, I grab my waders and winter hat and head to the river. Just upstream of the city of Monticello, two power plants use river water to cool plant turbines. That warm water allows that stretch of the river to remain open, even during the coldest winter months. That means anglers can chase big smallmouth bass, walleyes and even a few channel catfish in the dead of winter. The river, at its widest point around here, might be about 100 yards, so wade fishing is easy. Drifting a jig and minnow under a shallow slip bobber is deadly. Your best access point is Montisippi Regional Park, where you can park right at the river and hike upstream to the best water. The Numbers:
MN Fishing License: $28.50
Closest City: Minneapolis 30 minutes 5. The White and North ForkFor some reason, I like fishing rivers. Exactly why I suggest you make a quick trip to Arkansas and the White and North Fork Rivers. After all, the White is home to at least one 38 pound brown trout, which was, at one point, a record fish. Yes, a lot of really big trout call the White and North Fork Rivers home and anglers have plenty of public access. I prefer to wade fish when I visit. I also tend to spend a lot of time on the North Fork, where I've found some awfully big rainbows. Jerk baits are a good choice for big fish. So are streamers. The River Ridge Inn and Gaston's are two of my favorite family resorts. The Numbers:
Fishing License: $11 (3 day non-resident)
Trout Stamp: $10
Hotel on River $99 (per day)

Kurita’s Bass Ties Perry’s World Record

Jan. 8 -- After nearly six months of waiting, Japan’s Manabu Kurita is taking his place along side Georgia angler George Perry in the International Game Fish Association’s (IGFA) World Record Games Fishes book as dual holders of the All-Tackle record for largemouth bass each weighing 22 lb 4 oz and caught 77 years apart.
Today the IGFA approved Kurita’s application for the fish caught from Japan’s largest lake on July 2, 2009. The 70-year old non-profit fisheries conservation, education and record-keeping body, received Kurita’s application and documentation on Sept. 19, 2009. The largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), was caught from Lake Biwa which is an ancient reservoir northeast of Kyoto. The IGFA just announced that the 22 lb 4 oz bass caught by Japan’s Manabu Kurita officially ties George Perry's coveted world record.
Kurita, 32, of Aichi, Japan, was fishing Biwa that July day using a Deps Sidewinder rod and a Shimano Antares DC7LV reel loaded with 25 lb Toray line when he pitched his bait, a live bluegill, next to a bridge piling. It was Kurita’s first cast to the piling where he had seen a big bass swimming. He only twitched the bait a couple of times before he got bit. After a short, three minute fight he had the fish in the boat.
Kurita was quoted as saying “I knew it was big, but I didn’t know it was that big.”
But big it was. Using certified scales, his fish weighed in at 10.12 kg or 22 lb 4 oz. When measured, the fish had a fork length of 27.2 inches and a girth of 26.7 inches. The IGFA only has line classes up to 20 lb for largemouth bass, so Kurita had no chance at a line class record as well.
IGFA rules for fish caught outside the U.S. allows anglers 90 days to submit their applications from the date of their catch. The documentation was received through the IGFA’s sister association the Japan Game Fish Association (JGFA). IGFA conservation director Jason Schratwieser said Kurita’s application was meticulously documented with the necessary photos and video.
Kurita’s fish ties the current record held for over 77 years by Perry who caught his bass on Georgia’s Montgomery Lake, June 2, 1932, near Jacksonville, Georgia. That 22 lb 4 oz behemoth won Field and Stream Magazine’s big fish contest and 46 years later, when the IGFA took over freshwater records from Field and Stream, it became the All-Tackle record now one of over 1,100 fresh and saltwater species the IGFA monitors.
IGFA All-Tackle records are now free for viewing by the public at igfa.org. Kurita’s name is now on the IGFA Web site with that of Perry’s and will appear in the 2011 edition of the World Record Games Fishes book…. unless that record is broken this year.
In North America the largemouth bass, and especially the All-Tackle record, is considered by millions of anglers as the “holy grail” of freshwater fish because of its popularity and the longevity of Perry’s record. That fish undoubtedly helped to spawn a billion dollar industry that today makes up a significant part of the sport of recreational fishing.
Schratwieser said, “The moment Kurita weighed his fish, word spread like wildfire. We knew this would be significant so we immediately contacted the JGFA for more information. Established in 1979, and JGFA compiles and translates all record applications of fish caught in Japan before forwarding to the IGFA. It works out well because they not only translate applications but can also contact the angler if more documentation is needed.”
LENGTHY PROCESS
“Since the IGFA requires three months from the time of capture before a record can be approved, the official word would have to wait until October 2,” said Schratwieser.
“However, almost right away rumors began to circulate that Kurita may have caught his fish in a ‘no-fishing zone’. In response, the IGFA immediately corresponded with the JGFA to speak with the angler about this issue and to gather information regarding the legality of fishing where Kurita caught his bass. Official word came back that the location of the catch was not a no-fishing zone, but was an area where anchoring or stopping was prohibited. This spurred more correspondence with the JGFA and the angler, including affidavits asking the angler if he stopped his boat at anytime. Again, the testimony and affidavits that came back indicated that the Kurita did not violate any laws and that his catch was indeed legitimate.” It didn’t end there.
A considerable amount of time and correspondence was to continue between the IGFA, JGFA and Kurita, a primary reason it took so long to come to a decision. During this time, the IGFA was also besieged with letters and emails from the bass fishing community, said Schratwieser.
“Many were incredulous that the All-Tackle record could be tied from a fish in Japan. Others beseeched the IGFA to approve the record and give Kurita the credit he deserves. Still others wanted to know why the entire process was taking so long. It soon became clear to the IGFA staff that this would be a contentious issue no matter if the record were approved or rejected. "
“The IGFA was also sensitive to this particular record because in past years there have been several attempts to sue us over largemouth bass record claims. Although none of these claims have been successful, they have resulted in considerable legal fees for the IGFA,” he said.
In the end, the IGFA staff concluded it would be both in the best interest of the IGFA and that of Kurita if he submitted to a polygraph analysis. The IGFA reserves the right to employ polygraph analyses to any record application, and this is explicitly stated in the affidavit section of the world record application form.
Again, more correspondence was issued to the JGFA to request that Kurita take a polygraph test. He immediately agreed. On December 15, Kurita was examined by a professional polygraph analyst in Japan. The many questions he was given included if he was truthful about the information reported on the application form and if his boat ever came to a complete stop while fighting his fish.
The results from the polygraph concluded that Manabu Kurita answered the questions honestly and that the catch was legitimate.
George Perry’s 77 year old record was officially tied.

Due Diligence Pays Off
“Six months may seem like a lot of time to determine if a fish ties a record,” said Schratwieser. “Hopefully, people now understand the amount of due diligence the IGFA conducted on this record. Although we treat all records with equal rigor, the All-Tackle largemouth bass record is nothing less than iconic and the bass angling community deserved nothing less.”
Schratwieser added, “The IGFA wishes to applaud Kurita on his outstanding catch and would also like to commend him on his patience and candor during the entire review process. We would also like to thank the JGFA for their diligence and tireless assistance in corresponding with Kurita and fisheries officials.”Where Will The Next Record Come From?
Largemouth bass have also been introduced in many countries but in Japan fisheries officials consider it an invasive species. In addition, because bass are not native and are stocked in Japan, many speculated that the big bass was a sterile triploid. However when biologists in Japan examined the ova of the big female, Schratwieser said they concluded that the fish was not triploid.
For over 77 years the record stood as bass fanatics theorized when and where the record would be broken. Over the years there have been rumors and unsubstantiated reports of bass that could have tied or eclipsed Perry’s record, but nothing ever passed IGFA criteria. Some anglers did come close, however.
Schratwieser said the closest came in 1991, when Robert Crupi caught a 22 lb bass in Lake Dixon, California USA, that still reigns as the 16 lb line class record and the third heaviest approved bass record in IGFA history.
“Most people thought that the next All-Tackle record would come from California. Until Kurita’s tie the seven heaviest bass records behind Perry’s came from California lakes. Although not native to California, it appears transplanted bass have adapted quite well to the deep, clear lakes and reservoirs and the abundant trout forage found in some of them.
“Little did people know that introduced bass grew big in places besides California, and that there are true monsters swimming on the other side of the world in Japan.”</

• Premier Team Bracket Challenge Winner – East Division
• Cabela’s MWC East Division Point Total (must fish all three tournaments in the East with the same partner)
• Premier Team Bracket Challenge Winner – Central Division
• Cabela’s MWC Central Division Point Total (must fish all three tournaments in the Central with the same partner)
• Cabela’s MWC Challenge (must fish all three tournaments in a division with the same partner plus one outside of your division to be eligible for the Challenge)We look forward to fishing with you and hopefully cutting a check for your team this upcoming Cabela's MWC 2010 Season!Cabela’s, the world’s foremost outfitter for hunting, fishing and outdoor gear, is entering their nineth season as title sponsor of the MWC. Official sponsors of the MWC include: Berkley, Ranger Boats, Mercury, MotorGuide, Lowrance, Fishouflage, Versus (Vs.)
Bill Siemantel Marked Map

NAFC Life Member Bill Siemantel was still on a high from being recently inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame when I handed him this map and asked him to help with this installment of North American Fisherman’s Marked Map series. It was no surprise when he immediately started peppering me with ideas on how to approach the article, the lake and everything fishing. That’s just the kind of guy he is, and is a big reason he’d just made it in the Hall of Fame.It didn’t end there, either. As in previous editions, we gave him an actual Navionics HotMaps Premium paper chart of a Western bass lake and told him to show NAFC members exactly where he would fish and how he would do it from December through January. Not surprisingly, Siemantel went above and beyond, marking 40 ultra-specific spots on this fishery—any of which he says could yield the bass of a lifetime. In fact, he marked so many spots space in the magazine didn’t allow us to show all of them. But here online, ah … we’ve got all the space we want. Here is Bill Siemantel’s full list of hot spots!Click here to see Siemantel’s marked map. His notes for each spot are below.1. Is one of the best places in the entire lake for structure elements. In this picture the lake is down 40’ and you can see all 3-launch ramps. The set of 3 launch ramps are at the mouth of the Santa Ana River Arm on the east side of the shore. Depending on the water level any one of the ramps can produce monster bass year around on a verity of bait from jigs, crank baits, live bait, to the big trout baits. On the southeast side of all the ramps there are good structure drop offs that angle at a 45 degree with good size rocks and brush. Throwing out along the ledge of the ramps and working you bait uphill will produce the best results. At full pool the last ramp will be over 100 yards away from the north shore and is where some of the biggest winter time bass are caught on a regular basis.
2. Is the old Santa Ana Road running out to the Santa Ana Island. The point where the road enters the lake is an excellent area year around for big bass and other spices of game fish. On the west side of the road there are some scattered rocks but the key is to work both edges of the road. Light line is going to work well here with split shot RoboWorms in 4”, small crank baits and top water in the summer time. Work the roadbed out into the 18’ to 25’ depths.
3. Is a very subtle point with a ledge on the west side near a small cove with a wash coming into the lake. The wash comes right along the point and out into deeper water. This is an excellent summer spot for bass on plastic worms and top water lures. Think big jigs in the area especially after the rain, when the crawdads work their way up the wash and back down, attracting the bass.
4. Is a shallow shoreline in Wadleigh Arm. It is an excellent summer spot for large mouth bass. The fish will hold in the cabbage, which grows in this area. They will normally be on the deep edge of the cabbage, where the bottom turns to mud.
5. Is directly south of area 2. It consists of two large oak trees on the side of the roadbed. One of them is called “Pauline’s Tree” and it can be found in 30-35 foot of water. When the lake is full, follow the road out from 2 until your depth finder lights up, in this picture the lake is down 29’ and you can see the top of the tree. If you look behind Pauline you will see the roadbed entering the lake on the north shore and at full pool the water level will be past the two small docks on shore and start at the black top. When you graph don’t be afraid to go further than you think into open water to find your honey hole. This tree is a good bet for numbers of bass throughout the year but can pay big dividends in the winter months spooning over the top of the tree. Long line trolling a big trout bait over Pauline has put numbers of 10 pound fish in the boat in the winter.
6. Is a road running east to west off “Arrow Island”. When the lake is down, there is a small ledge in 8’ to 10’ on the south side of the road that holds bass from June to November. Jigs worked uphill into the funnel are deadly.
7. Is the S.W. Point of Arrow Island. This point has a lot of cobblestone rocks going from 0 to 40” of water. Because the crawdads are always there this is a year around spot. Jigs, Drop shot, cranks, and Big Baits will have their time here.
8. Is a brushy point on the east shore that slopes rather gradually and the crashes into 45’ of water. This is a good spot to quickly catch numbers of bass from 1 to 3 pounds. Drop shot rules here
9. Is a cove with a point at the mouth that is similar to 8, and a ledge running down the north side that holds good numbers of crawfish throughout the year. This is also a place the trout will rome around the mouth of the cove and working big baits on top water can produce some incredibly strikes. In the spring do not pass this place up for sight fishing bass up to 8 pounds.
10. On this point the water will drops from 5’-10’ sharply into 25’ of water. This spot has rocks and gravel and some small bushes directly on top of the point. Combination of jigs and drops will work here.
11. Consists of two sunken islands at the mouth of Dead Horse Canyon, These islands top out at 23’ when the lake is full. A good way to find them is to position your boat so that you can see the white sign at the rear of Dead Horse. This lines you up so that you will come up out of 60’ of water into 23’. Monster Tubs and Big Baits have rules here for years.
12. The first two points on the north side of Dead Horse are probably the only really good spots in the whole cove. These points are rock with a lot of brush. These spots can produce at any time of the year. The best angle is to fish up hill with jigs or worms.
13. Is a series of ledges and shoreline near the barrel boom that produce trout on the troll with lead line to bass on live crawdads or big baits year around.
14. In the southwestern part of the dam area, dropping into some of the deepest water in the lake, this is an excellent spot for bass. From spoons, split shot, jigs and carolina rigs, this place has always delivered.
15. Is on the west shore going into long valley. This is all gravel with a lot of brush and weeds and there are a lot of small cuts and ledges to attract fish. This area is excellent year around with crank baits and drop shot.
16. Is a rock point with 3 major drops on it. In early spring and early winter this is a great bass spot. The best bait here is a jig during both times.
17. Is a brush-covered point that produces throughout the summer period primarily. Though some people do well on surface plugs here, I have found a split shot Roboworm in oxblood light has always produced.
18. Is an excellent spot from June to October for bass. This is one of the best top water places on the lake.
19. Is a riprap area in the back of a cove in the “Wren’s Nest” area. This spot can yield some of the best small crank bait bite in crawdad colors year around. This place has also given up some monster slab crappie in the early spring.
20. Is a spot which declines gradually except for the west side which has a ledge dropping sharply. The bass on this early summer spot are either completely on or completely off. When it is on, this is one of the best spots on the lake for numbers of 1 to 3 pound fish. 50 fish split shot days are common here.
21. Is a steep brush covered points . This is a great spawning area from February to June with small plastic right up on the bank and worked out to 20’ of water.
22. Great deep-water spot with one tree in 30-35 foot of water. Jig or Big baits will work here in the late afternoon when the wind picks up.
23. Is a very steep rock bank with a point. Either side of the point can produce bass in 25’ to 40’ of water from mid summer to fall.
24. This is another great top water area in the summer that turns into a crank bait zone in the early fall.
25. Is a shallow water spot in the back of “Station Canyon”. This is an area of mud banks, cabbage, and grass. This is the place to pull out your light line in the after noon when the winds have muddied up the water near the banks. Fish the mud line transition to clear water and hold on.
26. This point going into “Deep Cat” is probably one of the most popular ledges in the entire lake. This ledge rises out of 60’ water to 15’ making it very easy to locate. This place will produce year around and is featured in my DVD with monster fish catches with long line trolling as one of the techniques.
27. Is a plateau and ledge in the middle of Deep Cat coming off the point on the east shore of “Deep Cat” and dropping from 15’-25’ depending on water level. This is an excellent spot for bass on an array of baits. Sit on top of the plateau and work your lures uphill.
28. This spot in known as “Fishtail” hole since the entire cove looks like a big fish tail. This spot is very shallow and drops from 15’ to 25’ of water on the east side. IF you are camping here this is a great spot to shore fish with drop shot worms in the winter to frog fishing in the summer months when the grass grows.
29. Is the old coyote boat ramp. It is usually in 25’ to 35’ of water and is one of the best winter spooning spots in the lake. A quick look with the fish finder will show you if the bass are there and then just drop your favorite spoon.
30. Is off “Dunshee Point” and is in 30 feet of water when the lake is full (in this picture the lake is down 30’). This is another place where “Micro Topography” is the key. There is one big single stump with a few large rocks that sits outside the mouth of this cove and is a 100 yards away from either side of the east or west shore. This is a very subtle point that has a main creek channel on the northwest side of it. Hold your boat on the south side and throw to the dirt road on the north shore in the picture. You will be able to fish uphill into the stump with jigs, dropshot, Carolina rigs in the spring, but in the winter a well-placed spoon or big trout baits could get you a fish of a lifetime.
31. Is a plateau and ledge formed by a creek channel from “Dunshee Point”. Fish this place in the winter with jigs when the bass are holding on the bottom and then make sure you try out the Big Baits before you leave.
32. Is the spot where the creek channel touches shore on a point on the main island. This spot drops off quickly from 25’ to 40’. Summer time crank baits up close and winter spooning off the ledge will put you in the game
33. Is a shallow water point with pea-gravel and vegetation, which is an excellent early morning and late afternoon spot for bass in the spring and summer months. This is a sleeper spot with very little structure but for some reason dragging a 4” RoboWorm will produce some great catches.
34. Is a sharply dropping rocky point, which is primarily a late summer through winter spot for bass. Depending on the water levels, this point tops out at 15’ and drops off to about 35’-50’ and is almost straight up and down. Working big baits up the point early in the morning and during heavy winds blowing into it can cause bone-jarring strikes.
35. This is the “Deer Slope” area and is one of the best spots on the main island. From springtime bed fishing to jigs or live crawdads in the winter will produce monsters.
36. Is a deep wintering spot for bass in the middle of the lake off of the creek channels ledges. The bass will stack here and can be caught with spoons, Carolina rigs, or drop shot.
37. This Orchard Point an is an excellent bass spot year around from drop shotting to trolling big bait, your odds here are very good to take home a trophy bass.
38. This is a good trout fishing area in the winter where the trout start to stack up after the plants. Trollers will use spinners in the morning and the bait fishermen with use floating cheese during the day. Remember if there are trout around, the bass are very close and top water big baits have caught their fair share of monsters here.
39. Is a road running east to west off “Arrow Island” and is east of spot number 6 on the map. In this picture the lake is down 29’ and you can see the road as it drops down the east side of the island. In 36’ of water when the lake is at full pool this east/west road will intersect with the main road that comes from area 2 on the map across the lake. At this T-intersection is one of the best spot on the island both in the spring and definitely in the winter months. With spoons, jigs, split shot, or the big trout plugs the key here is to listen to the fish and see what they want to eat on that given day. If you hold on top of the island and throw out into deep water towards the east you will cross the t- section as you work uphill. You will have to spend sometime trying to fine this place when the lake is up and just make sure you have a good GPS unit on your boat when you do. The fishermen that take the time to understand and find “Micro Topography” or the spot on spot will put themselves years ahead in the learning curve. Don’t be lazy and reap the rewards.
40. Is an all mud shallow water wash coming into the lake. There is no other real structure here other than a small depression that drops from 5’ to 8’ that is about 6 foot wide closer to the shore and 18’ to 21’ foot out from shore at a distant of up to 100 yards. In this picture I am showing you the lake when it is 42’ down and looking back to the west at area 2. During the years people have placed rocks and brush on the west and east side of the depression and is one of the most productive spots in the entire area for bass year around. Again, this is the place when understanding MICRO TOPOGRAPHY pays some big dividends and as you can see there is over 500 yards of nothing. Not paying attention to your graph as you work down this bank could make you miss a spot of a lifetime. If the lake was at full pool are you willing enough to graph out 300’ into the open water? Yes that is over a football field from shore.

IGFA Receives Documentation

DANIA BEACH, Fla. USA, (September 15, 2009) --- Documentation for a much talked about 22 lb 4 oz largemouth bass, caught from Japan’s largest lake in July, has arrived into the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) headquarters for world record recognition. IGFA recently received documentation on this potential world-record largemouth bass caught on Japan's largest lake. The fish reportedly weighed 22 lbs, 4ozs, and measured 27.2 inches long with a girth of 26.77 inches.
Late Monday, the IGFA, the 70-year old non-profit fisheries conservation, education and record-keeping body, received the application for the largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), caught July 2, by Manabu Kurita, 32, of Aichi, Japan. IGFA rules for fish caught outside the U.S. allows anglers 90 days to submit their applications from the date of their catch.
IGFA conservation director Jason Schratwieser said the World All-Tackle application is currently under review after it was received through the Japan Game Fish Association (JGFA).
Schratwieser said the application stated the bass weighed 10.12 kg (22 lbs 4 ozs) and was pulled from Lake Biwa an ancient reservoir northeast of Kyoto. Photos and video were also submitted with the written documentation.
Kurita’s fish would tie the current record held for over 77 years by George Perry caught on Georgia’s Montgomery Lake, June 2, 1932, near Jacksonville, Georgia. In North America, the largemouth bass, and especially the All-Tackle record, is considered by millions of anglers as the “holy grail” of freshwater fish because of its popularity and the longevity of Perry’s record.
Largemouth bass have also been introduced in many countries and in Japan fisheries officials consider it an invasive species. In addition, because bass are not native and are stocked in Japan, many speculated that the big bass was a sterile triploid. However when biologists in Japan examined the ova of the big female they concluded that the fish was not triploid.
IGFA World Records Coordinator Becky Wright reported Kurita’s fish measured 27.20 inches in length and an almost equal girth of 26.77 inches. She said Kurita was using a blue gill as live bait trolling through a canal.
A decision by the IGFA of whether Kurita’s fish will tie Perry’s record may take up to a month.
“We have a formal relationship with our sister organization, the Japan Game Fish Association where they first collect and review record applications for fish caught in Japan,” said Schratwieser. “It works out well because they not only translate applications but can also contact the angler if more documentation is needed.
“We still have a number of questions to ask them and Kurita regarding local laws and the area he caught it in while he was trolling through a canal on the lake,” said Schratwieser. “We hope to make an announcement in three to four weeks.”
Annually the IGFA publishes a comprehensive list of current records on nearly 1100 species of fresh and saltwater fish across the globe in its highly acclaimed World Record Game Fishes (WRGF) book which is divided into all-tackle, line classes, fly, and junior record categories.
The IGFA has been recognized as the official keeper of world saltwater fishing records since its founding in 1939. In 1978 it added the field of freshwater record-keeping when Field & Stream magazine transferred its 68 years of records to the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum, the association’s world headquarters in Dania Beach, Fla.
The IGFA website is www.igfa.org.</
