    <title>Fish Ed</title>

    <description>If you’ve ever wondered how fish react to fishing pressure, a new study on brown trout offers tantalizing clues.To gauge different responses to angling pressure between heavily fished and relatively untouched populations, biologists measured the catch and various behaviors of brown trout in two backcountry New Zealand rivers.1&#160;A recent study suggests that being caught and released drastically changes a fish’s behavior.&#160;The Ugly River is a wilderness stream accessible only by hiking 10 hours through untracked and difficult terrain. The second site was the Owen River, which is easily accessed by road and has high fishing pressure for a backcountry river. Both are 50 to 100 feet wide, provide the same habitat, and have similar densities and size structures of brown trout.Let’s Go FishingTeams of guides and experienced fly anglers methodically fished each river on four three-day trips. In 12 days, 157 browns were caught in the Ugly River, 51 in the Owen. The fish represented 43 percent of the Ugly River’s browns and 11 percent of the Owen’s population. Fish in both rivers averaged about 3.8 pounds.Both the number of trout seen and hooked declined on successive days of each three-day trip on the Ugly, as fishing pressure pushed the browns tight into cover. Researchers allowed two to four weeks to elapse between each three-day fishing trip, and noted that trout sightings and catches returned to high levels on the first day of each trip. In other words, fish responded to angling immediately, but the effects on trout behavior disappeared after two weeks.On the more pressured Owen River, the numbers of fish seen and hooked were much lower on the first day and did not change during successive days of each trip.Also, the trout in the Ugly River were less likely to be spooked, more likely to be caught on the first cast, and overall required fewer presentations. Fish in the Owen that did not spook were more likely to remain at their feeding station while anglers cast to them.What It MeansRelatively unfished brown trout are less angler-shy and more vulnerable to capture. But the “virgin waters” effect is short-lived. As was apparent in the Ugly River, a single capture drastically changes a fish’s behavior.&#160;Whether this response is learned or has a physiological basis—such as elevated levels of stress hormones or the depletion of energy reserves after capture—is not easily determined, but the effect lasts several days.There was also a “chronic” effect of fishing in the Owen’s browns. The trout were less visible and less catchable. And, while fish occupying visible feeding stations were less likely to spook, they were also less likely to take a fly.&#160;Do these findings apply only to brown trout in New Zealand streams? I doubt it. Fish in small, clear streams are highly vulnerable, but dozens of anglers fishing even a large lake or reservoir day after day can “educate” a lot of fish.I commonly hear fisheries management colleagues who try to maintain large populations of quality fish lament the effect of “increasingly skilled anglers” and how technology has raised angler efficiency. There is&#160;little doubt that angler skill and efficiency is increasing. But we may be wrong in assuming that the fish don’t change, too.&#160;1.Young, T.F., and J.W. Hayes. 2004. <title>Five Phenominal Fisheries on a Budget</title>
    <link>http://www.fishingclub.com/magazine/magazine/magazine-articles/articletype/articleview/articleid/1434/five-phenominal-fisheries-on-a-budget</link>
    <description>Okay, so we keep hearing a lot about the tough economy. Boat sales are in the tank and some manufacturers report sales down as much as 60 percent. More than a few of the more remote and high-end fishing lodges didn&#39;t even open their doors in 2009. That&#39;s the bad news. The good? Not all is not all doom and gloom in the fishing world. Several of my colleagues in the tackle and gear business say their sales are up. Why? Because people can go fishing without spending a ton of money. That got me thinking. Where are my favorite fishing destinations? You know, the ones that won&#39;t kill the bank account? Here are five of my favorite picks.1. Bassin&#39; and WalleyesThere are a ton of options for bass fishing in North America. Heck, more people fish for bass than any other single species. I&#39;m all about big fish and small crowds. Exactly why Roy Lake, South Dakota comes to mind. Roy is a 1,500 acre lake created 20,000 years ago by the glaciers. It sits in the heart of what&#39;s called South Dakota&#39;s Glacial Lakes Region; an area full of walleye, bass and crappie lakes. If you like smallmouth bass fishing, there aren&#39;t a lot of lakes that compare to Roy. Jig and minnows work wonders on Roy, as do soft plastics pitched around the lake&#39;s submerged timber. Come late July and August, the topwater bite takes off. Don&#39;t be surprised if you catch a couple fish in the 5 pound range. Oh, and don&#39;t be surprised if you also hook a few nice walleyes and pike. The lake has another big lure. Roy Lake State Park surrounds a good chunk of the lake, so visitors can beach their boats and camp right next to the beach. If you&#39;re looking for fancier accommodations, Roy Lake Resort is another great option.The Numbers:
Fishing license $32 (3 day non-resident)
State Park Campsite $16 (per night)
State Park Vehicle Fee $6 (per day)
Closest Major Cities
Sioux Falls, SD 2 &#189; hours
Minneapolis, MN 4 &#189;&#160;2. Trout fishingIf you&#39;re into fly fishing and the trout game, better pack your bags for Colorado. There, you can find plenty of great places to chase plenty of fish without having to pay expensive rod fees and private access rates. One of my favorite public spots is a place called Cheesman Canyon. The South Platte River runs through Cheesman Canyon just an hour from Denver and holds as many as 5,200 rainbown and brown trout per mile. If you visit, be sure to bring along your best pair of hiking boots. Anglers must hike a minimum of a mile on the Gill Trail to find good water. The key to Cheesman Canyon? Stick to small mayfly and midge patterns.The Numbers:
Fishing License: $21 (5 day non-resident)
1 Pair hiking boots $100
Closest Major City: Denver 60 minutes
&#160;&#160;3. Saltwater OasisIf you&#39;re looking for saltwater action without the hassle or price of a big-time fishing trip, then you need to check out the Padre Island National Seashore just outside of Corpus Christi, Texas. Anglers there have access to nearly 70 miles of beach along the Gulf Coast. Here&#39;s the catch. The National Seashore is open to cars and trucks. Locals cruise the beach, looking for feeding Pelicans. If you find the birds, you&#39;ll find the baitfish and the feeding sea trout, pompano, drum and crevalle jacks. On my last trip, surf casting Berkley Gulp on a long-shank jig worked like a charm. If you&#39;d like to up the ante, you can hire a local guide and fish for sharks from the beach. Be warned, even a small five foot black tip will turn your arms to rubber.The Numbers:
Fishing License: $16 (non-resident per day)
$10 Saltwater stamp
$10 Beach access charge per vehicleClosest City
Corpus Christi 15 minutes&#160;&#160;4. A Winter Getaway

See more at&#160;jacobgibb.com.I may be a little bit biased, but the Mississippi River runs darn near through my backyard, just north and west of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Come the snowy season, I grab my waders and winter hat and head to the river. Just upstream of the city of Monticello, two power plants use river water to cool plant turbines. That warm water allows that stretch of the river to remain open, even during the coldest winter months. That means anglers can chase big smallmouth bass, walleyes and even a few channel catfish in the dead of winter. The river, at its widest point around here, might be about 100 yards, so wade fishing is easy. Drifting a jig and minnow under a shallow slip bobber is deadly. Your best access point is Montisippi Regional Park, where you can park right at the river and hike upstream to the best water.The Numbers:
MN Fishing License: $28.50
Closest City: Minneapolis 30 minutes&#160;&#160;5. The White and North ForkFor some reason, I like fishing rivers. Exactly why I suggest you make a quick trip to Arkansas and the White and North Fork Rivers. After all, the White is home to at least one 38 pound brown trout, which was, at one point, a record fish. Yes, a lot of really big trout call the White and North Fork Rivers home and anglers have plenty of public access. I prefer to wade fish when I visit. I also tend to spend a lot of time on the North Fork, where I&#39;ve found some awfully big rainbows. Jerk baits are a good choice for big fish. So are streamers. The River Ridge Inn and Gaston&#39;s are two of my favorite family resorts.The Numbers:
Fishing License: $11 (3 day non-resident)
Trout Stamp: $10
Hotel on River $99 (per day)&#160;&#160;&#160;

    <title>Kurita’s Bass Ties Perry’s World Record</title>
    <link>http://www.fishingclub.com/magazine/magazine/magazine-articles/articletype/articleview/articleid/1440/kuritas-bass-ties-perrys-world-record</link>
    <description>Jan. 8 -- After nearly six months of waiting, Japan’s Manabu Kurita is taking his place along side Georgia angler George Perry in the International Game Fish Association’s (IGFA) World Record Games Fishes book as dual holders of the All-Tackle record for largemouth bass each weighing 22 lb 4 oz and caught 77 years apart.
Today the IGFA approved Kurita’s application for the fish caught from Japan’s largest lake on July 2, 2009.&#160; The 70-year old non-profit fisheries conservation, education and record-keeping body, received Kurita’s application and documentation on Sept. 19, 2009. The largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), was caught from Lake Biwa which is an ancient reservoir northeast of Kyoto.&#160;The IGFA just announced that the 22 lb 4 oz bass caught by Japan’s Manabu Kurita&#160;officially ties George Perry&#39;s coveted world record.
Kurita, 32, of Aichi, Japan, was fishing Biwa that July day using a Deps Sidewinder rod and a Shimano Antares DC7LV reel loaded with 25 lb Toray line when he pitched his bait, a live bluegill, next to a bridge piling.&#160; It was Kurita’s first cast to the piling where he had seen a big bass swimming. He only twitched the bait a couple of times before he got bit. After a short, three minute fight he had the fish in the boat.
Kurita was quoted as saying “I knew it was big, but I didn’t know it was that big.”&#160;
But big it was.&#160; Using certified scales, his fish weighed in at 10.12 kg or 22 lb 4 oz.&#160; When measured, the fish had a fork length of 27.2 inches and a girth of 26.7 inches. The IGFA only has line classes up to 20 lb for largemouth bass, so Kurita had no chance at a line class record as well.&#160;
IGFA rules for fish caught outside the U.S. allows anglers 90 days to submit their applications from the date of their catch. The documentation was received through the IGFA’s sister association the Japan Game Fish Association (JGFA). IGFA conservation director Jason Schratwieser said Kurita’s application was meticulously documented with the necessary photos and video.
Kurita’s fish ties the current record held for over 77 years by Perry who caught his bass on Georgia’s Montgomery Lake, June 2, 1932, near Jacksonville, Georgia. That 22 lb 4 oz behemoth won Field and Stream Magazine’s big fish contest and 46 years later, when the IGFA took over freshwater records from Field and Stream, it became the All-Tackle record now one of over 1,100 fresh and saltwater species the IGFA monitors.&#160;
&#160;IGFA All-Tackle records are now free for viewing by the public at igfa.org.&#160; Kurita’s name is now on the IGFA Web site with that of Perry’s and will appear in the 2011 edition of the World Record Games Fishes book…. unless that record is broken this year.&#160;
In North America the largemouth bass, and especially the All-Tackle record, is considered by millions of anglers as the “holy grail” of freshwater fish because of its popularity and the longevity of Perry’s record.&#160; That fish undoubtedly helped to spawn a billion dollar industry that today makes up a significant part of the sport of recreational fishing.
Schratwieser said, “The moment Kurita weighed his fish, word spread like wildfire. We knew this would be significant so we immediately contacted the JGFA for more information. Established in 1979, and JGFA compiles and translates all record applications of fish caught in Japan before forwarding to the IGFA. It works out well because they not only translate applications but can also contact the angler if more documentation is needed.”&#160;
&#160;LENGTHY PROCESS
“Since the IGFA requires three months from the time of capture before a record can be approved, the official word would have to wait until October 2,” said Schratwieser.&#160;
“However, almost right away rumors began to circulate that Kurita may have caught his fish in a ‘no-fishing zone’.&#160; In response, the IGFA immediately corresponded with the JGFA to speak with the angler about this issue and to gather information regarding the legality of fishing where Kurita caught his bass.&#160; Official word came back that the location of the catch was not a no-fishing zone, but was an area where anchoring or stopping was prohibited.&#160; This spurred more correspondence with the JGFA and the angler, including affidavits asking the angler if he stopped his boat at anytime.&#160; Again, the testimony and affidavits that came back indicated that the Kurita did not violate any laws and that his catch was indeed legitimate.” It didn’t end there.
A considerable amount of time and correspondence was to continue between the IGFA, JGFA and Kurita, a primary reason it took so long to come to a decision. During this time, the IGFA was also besieged with letters and emails from the bass fishing community, said Schratwieser.
“Many were incredulous that the All-Tackle record could be tied from a fish in Japan.&#160; Others beseeched the IGFA to approve the record and give Kurita the credit he deserves.&#160; Still others wanted to know why the entire process was taking so long.&#160; It soon became clear to the IGFA staff that this would be a contentious issue no matter if the record were approved or rejected.&#160; &quot;
“The IGFA was also sensitive to this particular record because in past years there have been several attempts to sue us over largemouth bass record claims.&#160; Although none of these claims have been successful, they have resulted in considerable legal fees for the IGFA,” he said.
In the end, the IGFA staff concluded it would be both in the best interest of the IGFA and that of Kurita if he submitted to a polygraph analysis. The IGFA reserves the right to employ polygraph analyses to any record application, and this is explicitly stated in the affidavit section of the world record application form.
Again, more correspondence was issued to the JGFA to request that Kurita take a polygraph test.&#160;He immediately agreed.&#160;On December 15, Kurita was examined by a professional polygraph analyst in Japan.&#160; The many questions he was given included if he was truthful about the information reported on the application form and if his boat ever came to a complete stop while fighting his fish.&#160;
The results from the polygraph concluded that Manabu Kurita answered the questions honestly and that the catch was legitimate.&#160;
George Perry’s 77 year old record was officially tied.

Due Diligence Pays Off
“Six months may seem like a lot of time to determine if a fish ties a record,” said Schratwieser. “Hopefully, people now understand the amount of due diligence the IGFA conducted on this record.&#160; Although we treat all records with equal rigor, the All-Tackle largemouth bass record is nothing less than iconic and the bass angling community deserved nothing less.”
Schratwieser added, “The IGFA wishes to applaud Kurita on his outstanding catch and would also like to commend him on his patience and candor during the entire review process.&#160; We would also like to thank the JGFA for their diligence and tireless assistance in corresponding with Kurita and fisheries officials.”Where Will The Next Record Come From?
Largemouth bass have also been introduced in many countries but in Japan fisheries officials consider it an invasive species. In addition, because bass are not native and are stocked in Japan, many speculated that the big bass was a sterile triploid.&#160; However when biologists in Japan examined the ova of the big female, Schratwieser said they concluded that the fish was not triploid.
For over 77 years the record stood as bass fanatics theorized when and where the record would be broken. Over the years there have been rumors and unsubstantiated reports of bass that could have tied or eclipsed Perry’s record, but nothing ever passed IGFA criteria.&#160; Some anglers did come close, however.&#160;
Schratwieser said the closest came in 1991, when Robert Crupi caught a 22 lb bass in Lake Dixon, California USA, that still reigns as the 16 lb line class record and the third heaviest approved bass record in IGFA history.&#160;
“Most people thought that the next All-Tackle record would come from California.&#160;Until Kurita’s tie the seven heaviest bass records behind Perry’s came from California lakes.&#160; Although not native to California, it appears transplanted bass have adapted quite well to the deep, clear lakes and reservoirs and the abundant trout forage found in some of them.
“Little did people know that introduced bass grew big in places besides California, and that there are true monsters swimming on the other side of the world in Japan.”&lt;/</description>

    <description>Cabela&#39;s MWC&#160;2010 Registration&#160;Begins Today!&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Registration for the 2010 season begins today!&#160;&#160;To register&#160;for your favorite tournament or a tournament near you, please visit www.masterswalleyecircuit.com.The Cabela’s Masters Walleye Circuit has a few changes coming up for the 2010 season.&#160; The MWC will continue with its three divisions (Central, East and West) but has lowered their entry fee from $800 per team down to $650 per team.&#160; At $650 per team, we feel that we remain a great option for anglers looking to share costs but yet enjoy the competitiveness of a professional circuit, while at the same time we are hopeful that purse sizes will increase due to larger fields.Also something new for 2010 are Premier Teams.&#160; Teams that&#160;sign up for all three tournaments&#160;in a division during our early session will be called Premier Teams.&#160; Advantages of signing up as a Premier Team are:•&#160;Cabela’s Gift Card Contingency Bonus!&#160; Over $9,000 in Cabela’s gift cards will be given away to Premier Teams throughout the qualifying season.&#160; The top finishing Premier Team at each tournament will win a $500 gift card, the 2nd highest finishing Premier Team will take home a $300 gift card and the 3rd highest finishing Premier Team will win a $200 gift card at each qualifying event in 2010.•&#160;Enter new bracket for a Championship berth!&#160; Each Premier Team will automatically be entered into a bracket for their respective division with the winner of the bracket receiving a spot into the following year’s Championship.&#160; Once boat numbers are assigned, each Premier Team will be placed into a slot on the bracket.&#160; On each day of the tournament, half the field will best their bracket to move on to the next round.&#160; After the final tournament of each division, a bracket winner will be determined and automatically receive a spot in the 2011 Championship.&#160; In addition, each division winner of the Premier Team Bracket Challenge will win a $500 Cabela’s gift card.•&#160;Special Premier Team Merchandise!&#160; Premier Team members will each receive a special Premier Team hat and t-shirt for committing early to fishing all three tournaments in a division.&#160;•&#160;Delayed payment for each tournament!&#160; All Premier Teams will be allowed to delay payment for each tournament until 30 days prior to the event.&#160; This allows teams to hold a spot in the field without paying for all events at once.The MWC will begin accepting Premier Team registrations on Wednesday, January 6, 2010.&#160; The early registration session period will end on Wednesday, February 10, 2010.&#160; Sponsor contingency bonuses are still being worked on but there are plans to continue with many of the programs from 2009.&#160; The MWC will continue to pay out to 20% of the field in each tournament.Strive to plan your MWC season to make it to the World Walleye Championship.&#160; The MWC Championship purse is not contingent on field size throughout the year.&#160; The Championship purse has consistently been around $101,500, with the winners taking home $25,000 and remains the same for the 2011 Championship.&#160; As noted above, there is a new avenue available for anglers working towards qualifying for the Championship.&#160; Anglers will qualify for the 2011 MWC Championship in this manner:•&#160;Premier Team Bracket Challenge Winner&#160; – West Division
