Often the difference between an ordinary and a gourmet fried fish meal is the introduction of a simple fresh sauce or topping. The use of fresh produce, whether home grown or from the grocery store, can provide a refreshing and zesty counterpoint against the oily crunchiness of the fish breading.

It was in regards to his lack of willingness to practice. For fisherman practice really does make perfect, even though we don’t think of it as that.

I’ve been chasing a trophy smallmouth for almost 20-years now. The trophy I’m chasing happens to be a monster 22-inch bronzeback I caught back in 1994 on a trip to southern Lake of the Woods, Ontario and 19 years later I’m still trying to land one bigger.

This week’s entry has a dual meaning. I am writing this late in the evening of February 3, 2013. Earlier today we said our last goodbyes to Jim Hudson, a fellow Ice Team member who lost his life in a tragic accident on Lake Superior on January 26th. I had planned to tell you all about the forgotten and under-appreciated burbot, but I can’t help but think of Jimmy… He loved the slimy buggers as much as I do, and would’ve wanted me to let you in on the secret of the often overlooked freshwater cod, so we’ll start there.

Spinnerbaits seem to get skipped over in favor of more “glamorous” lures, but they remain tremendously effective and a bass tournament workhorse. Few lures can cover so much water and pick off big bass as well as this wirebait. While many people have their favorites, selecting the right one for the condition can be challenging. Here is some advice from pro anglers to help you become spinnerbait-savvy.

Incorporating apple cider, lemon, and rosemary, this fish stew is a festive, tangy centerpiece to a holiday or winter meal. I like to use firm-fleshed fish such as eelpout (a freshwater member of the cod family with a snake-like appearance and lobster-like consistency) or, from the ocean, marlin or black cod. Firm fish provides a good counterpoint against the crunchiness of the wild rice and the tanginess of the cider and lemon.

When fish are low in the water column, smart ice anglers know that bottom pounding and bottom scrounging are “go-to” presentations. Truly successful ice fishermen, however, know when to pound, when to scrounge, and when to combine the two to catch more walleyes, perch, bluegills and other gamefish. Here’s how to determine the best presentation every time.

We started out fishing the “basin” area outside of Pine island. Although it was still fairly fresh ice (there was still some open water only 2 days before we arrived), the ice conditions out to about 30 foot were 5 to 10 inches so we were able to get out there with snowmobiles, ATVs and our portable Clam shelters. Many of the resorts had their first slew of permanent houses positioned from about 22 to 26 feet. We opted to get outside of them and fished 28 to 30-feet.
