  • BankBasser Hey guys im 12 years old and love to tye flies. But im not to great fishing. Im fairly good and wanted to know when or if someone would host a flyswap
    about 2 years ago
    • Fly-Fisher ;-)Hi I'm 18 and have been fly fishing for a few years and I LOVE IT!!! When I first started I thought that it was something you did more for the satisfaction than catching fish, but I was wrong. I catch easily 2 to 3 times the fish with a fly pole over a spining rod. That includes Bass, Bluegill, Crappie, Sunfish, Trout, Walleye, Carp, Pike, and anything else that swims.
As far as witch flies to use, for trout I use a stone fly nymph (size 10 black bead head wully bugger), For panfish anything shinny. and for Bass, Pike, and Walleye a large size 6-1/0 Green and white buck tail or clouser minnow.
      GOOD LUCK !

    • jcascioliGood Luck!!
      1:10 PM June 24
    • Fly-Fisher ;-)Didn't get any bites, it just rained here and the water was really high. Still fun though, I found a "shad rap" laying on the shore.
      11:31 AM June 27
    • jcascioliYea high water can really ruin a good weekend fishing trip. This spring the water on the salmon river in upstate ny was running at 4,000 cfs. It usuallt runs about 700-900 cfs under normal conditons
      6:34 PM June 27
    • Fly-Fisher ;-)On Monday night went fishing Below the Wisconsin Dells Dam on the Wisconsin River and it was at least 12-14 feet above the norm! I didn't get any bites but I managed to fall in up to my neck.

    • Fly-Fisher ;-)I going to fish the tributaries near Port Washington next spring and I will make sure to try that. I tried to tie some egg patterns with yarn but I think the beads will work better. Thanks for the tips.

  • bpetersen Anyone ever use human hair in their fly tying material? I was looking at a big pile of hair from my 16 month old son( he grows hair like a weed) and was thinking hmmm I wonder what i could use that for.
    • the rod tosserwell yes you can . you can use it for tail material as JCascioli did ,tie it in and wrap it as a body, perhaps make a hair wing. or cut it up and mix it in with dubbing . if you can think it you can use it .
      7:51 AM June 22
    • bpetersenYa i was thinking of dubbing. thanks for the info.
      8:05 AM June 22
    • Fly-Fisher ;-)It sometimes works for ribbing on small flies (size 18 or smaller),it makes great mayfly tails if it's curly, its good for streamers ,and great for weed guards! I use my own hair all the time.

  • Fly-Fisher ;-) What do you guys suggest for walleye. I use a dark green and white bucktail with gold flashing tied on a heavy wire hook in sizes 10 to 1/0 depending on water clarity (not that you cant use a big one in clear water).

    • skewlYes, I know this video is in spanish, and it's an easy tie, but the interesting part is how the tier whip finishes the fly, I've never seen a fly finished like this. Has anyone else seen it done quite like this? It's kind of a different way to do it and it looks much easier than some traditional methods. (Pardon my newbieness, I still haven't nailed the whip finish)
      12:00 PM June 15
    • the rod tosserIt is a hand tied half hitch usually they put three half hitches in . I recommend you learn how to do a hand whip finish and a hand half hitch there are times when you may need each in the proses of tying a fly .

    • Fly-Fisher ;-)I think whip finishing is best, not to hard once u do it a few times.
