  • edzachmeyer Hi All, heading down to OBX the last week of August and plan on doing some fishing. I'm staying on the beach in Nags Head and will be doing some surf casting. Any pointers? What should I fish for? Thanks.

    • jtreppfor easy fun fishing you can fish for spot, mullet and croaker. use a two hook rig and make sure to use a 3 oz pyramid weight. for bait you can use bloodworms or squid but i prefer bloodworms because they are easier to deal with and the hook-up ratio is better. just cast out pretty much anywhere, make sure the line is taught then wait for the nibble and set the hook. i have even caught a few flounder and skate this way. the best fishing is during tidal changes. and if you need some pointers then i highly suggest talking to a local bait and tackle shop. they are always the most helpful. the bluefish should be hot then so to catch them you just need to go out early in the morning or late at night and cast a spoon into the surf and reel it in. and no matter what you can never retrieve it fast enough. the blues like it when its moving fast through the water

    • edzachmeyerGreat stuff jtrepp. Thanks. I used that exact set up when I was down there last year using bloodworms. (2 hook rig, 3oz pyramid). I didn't have much luck but it was just after the hurricane and the town was in the process of fortifying the beaches so I'm guessing the fish were hanging out elsewhere. I was cutting the bloodworms in one inch sections. Do you think that was too small? I'll give the blues a shot this year as well. How large of a spoon should I use and what's the set up for that? Thanks again.

    • jtreppIdeally, the worm should cover the entire hook but its possible to catch them with a small peice too. The spoon should be about the size of your index finger, give or take. But if you see that there are blues and your not catching them, I'd downsize. And make sure to use a wire leader because they will break off on normal line. The leader doesn't need to be too long. I've also caught a bluefish of a bluefish rig which is pretty much a hook with a wire leader that has a small float near the hook. You can buy finger mullet and use those or catch your own spot and use the heads
