  • Fishing Scouters Welcome new members to our group. Clint, I looked up your organization on the web. God bless you for the good work you do. scutler1, congratulations on being an Eagle. My son was a member of Troop 563 in Garland, Texas, and made Eagle with Troop 58 in Cooperstown, Pa. in 2010. My second son is 2nd Class now. SCcatfisherman7, way to go. It sounds like you are well on your way to Eagle, and thanks for giving back. We need more guys like you. Especially fishermen! I haven't made it out fishing yet this year, but I did get my license. My goal this year is to become knowledgeable enough about fly fishing to teach the merit badge.

  • SCcatfisherman7 I am a Life Scout (all I lack for my Eagle is my project which is in the works) in Venture Crew 616 and Troop 41 in Greer, SC. I am applying (for the 2nd year) as a camp staff member at Camp Old Indian. I could possibly teach fishing Merit Badge this year. My favorite thing to do in my free time at camp (or anywhere else) is fish. My favorite is catfish, but where I come from, you put a red worm or nightcrawler on a hook, add a bobber, and wait. My Venture Crew Advisor, the Camp Ranger, and myself are currently trying to get the camp fishing lake stocked with trout.

  • pskidad As a longtime Boy Scout leader and fisherman, I would like to start a group exchanging information to introduce Boy Scouts to fishing. This could be Fishing Merit Badge Counselor techniques, good places for troop camping/fishing trips, ways to improve fishing skills, or just how to get boys fired up for fishing.

    • clint.herbertI'm not involved with the Boy Scouts, but I run a youth fishing club at Running Rebels Community Organization. The answers to your questions obviously vary by demographics ie age, but one sure-fire way to get the kids fired up is by connecting them with success early. Start simple: local shore-fishing opportunities such as public ponds and docks with good panfish populations (size irrelevant) are good places to start. Teach the basics of bobber fishing and get them catching something fast. After a successful outing, most will be excited for the next trip and the next fish. Then, you can slowly build upon this.
