  • gjones16 I'm from the northeast. During the winter months I usually fish a small tube or small jerkbait on the Susquehanna river. What is everyone's favorite winter lure for smallies?

  • bft200 I went river fishing from the shore today. Caught three smallmouth bass and a rock bass. The bass bit on live worms and the rock bass bit on a white shad dart with a white grub trailer. One smallmouth was decent-sized (eleven inches), the others were smaller. Released them all due to being out of season. Have to wait a few weeks yet for bass season.

    • bft200I don't go bass fishing as much as I would like to. I tend not to travel far from where I live when I go fishing at this present time. This could be what is limiting my ability to locate hot spots or bigger fish. I am from PA and fish two different rivers for bass. I think there are bigger bass to be caught and I will keep trying. Congratulations for catching smallmouth as big as you mentioned; it's challenging to locate them and also to use the proper bait to get them to bite. Lures I use include plastic grubs and worms, and live worms. I think the fast current of the river can sometimes make it difficult to find where the bass are and be able to get the bait to where it is necessary for feeding. Hot spots can be difficult to access from the shore because of property restrictions and unlandscaped wooded areas. You must have found some good, productive areas to fish. Good luck!

    • gjones16I am also from PA. I fish mostly lakes, but when I go on the river (Susquehanna) I rarely catch anything less than 12". The trick is a pair of waders. Getting out the extra yards can go a long way!
