Fishing Newbies
Newly turned on to fishing but don't know the right techniques and equipment. Maybe we can learn from each others' experiences.

  • countryliving Hi :) Anyone interested in getting together this Spring to go fishing? I am in the Poconos of PA (that's n e PA). I have a 12 ft alum boat with electric motor though I need help getting in/out of the lakes as I have arthritis. I have been fishing for a few years but still would call myself a beginner, as I have only gone to a few lakes near my home (would like to try new ones). I usually fish for trout, perch and for fun: sunfish. If you think you might be interested, drop me a line and lets give it a try! Lynne

    • EireFuryWhat do you use for catching perch? Do they get very big?

    • countrylivingSorry it has taken me so long to answer (usually faster than this). The perch are any where from 8" to 13" but at certain lakes they are bigger. Caught a 12" myself :)

  • EireFury I am a Utah member who just started fishing in Fall of 2011. I do a lot of fishing in local ponds, reservoirs and some lake fishing as well. My husband and I are lucky to have some experienced fishermen for friends to help us out with many of the newbie queries that come up. If you are looking for hints and tips to help get you started, here are some ideas to consider: 1) Walmart has some pretty good dvds on the basics of fishing. Check their sporting goods section. Or check out any sporting goods store. 2) When you go fishing, question your fellow fishermen. Most are, usually, more than happy to help out a newbie. 3) Good times to go fishing are during the time of the new and full moon, on an overcast day, on a rday when there is light rain. Hope this helps :)

  • countryliving I've been fresh fishing for a while now, going to lakes here in N E PA. I've done pretty good with the trout, but haven't had a lot of luck with bass. I've read books, but get confused on terminology any hints on how to figure out the difference in crank baits, jigs, etc ? Sure could use some help!!!! thanks

    • EireFuryChech out takemefishin.com. They have some helpful pages. Also check out your local DWR (Division of Wildlife Resources). Whoever publishes your local fishing guide - a freebie handbook you can find in the sporting goods section of Walmart or any sporting goods store. Good luck & happy fishin'.
