After reading the Steve's editorial and the article on structured spoons it prompted me to make a trip into my workshop. I had never used a spoon for fishing yet and i didn't really feel compelled to run to the local tackle shops to buy one to try so i opted for the grandfather route. Dremel in hand and an old teaspoon at the ready I started crafting. After cutting the handle off and drilling a small hole in one end and several feeble attempts to solder a hook on the other side I drilled another hole (time consuming). To each hole I affixed a split ring one for the line and another for the hook. the joy of the split ring is i can put almost any hook on my new spoon lure. Using just the weight of the spoon's bowl I was overjoyed at the distance i could cast it, even with a strong head on wind. while the few times I cast out I did not catch a fish I did marvel at the way the spoon took to spinning through the water as I retrieved it (maybe a swivel is in the next phase). I am no artist but maybe a paint job would be a good idea to entice a bite. Either way the article has prompted this amateur fisherman to revisit the old days when the craftsmen made their own lures and baits out of ready supplies laying around the house...

If you take the time to dig through the Lures and Baits topic, you will find more than a few posts on this subject. Most guys use tape to decorate their spoons, getting paint to hold up is a problem. I would recommend a swivel when fishing a spoon, line twist can be severe! Tom
