Well in the east coast there's plenty of winter fishing. Plenty of charter boats going out for cod, ling and black fish. Better bring your A game...this isn't fishing for the faint of heart. lol. Your dealing with cold weather and big swells..dress warm and bring some motion sickness pills, becuse the boat ain't turning back! |

always wanted to go out on a cod boat. i don't know a whole lot about it. don't do a lot of offshore. sometimes go to the charters off montauk. the numbers and size of the fish there are just amazing. |

Yea, I'm based in Brooklyn. I do fish jamaca bay sometimes. Also do a lot of fishing in the east and Hudson rivers. Waiting for spring when the stripers come in. The Hudson can Be really hoot then. |

Cool...we'll have to keep in touch. I've never fished the Hudson or the East River, Mostly J-Bay, I only venture out of the bay when the conditions permit, crossing Breazy Point can be treacherous, and has taken many boats to the bottom. |

I don't have any ice fishing gear but someday I plan on buying some when I have the monetary resources to do so! But that's still not going to stop me from winter fishing! Im meeting a friend in a few hours to go fishing on a semi frozen lake. We will be fishing from the shore the part of the lake that isn't frozen and targeting trout! Im so excited! First fishing trip since July! Gonna be about 20 degrees or colder though... Now that's dedication! |

Good grief CQ...you haven't been fishin' since July? Are you sure you remember how? LOL! When you get back, let us know how it went. Oh yeah...did you spool up some of that new Trilene the club sent you?

No, not yet. Didn't think I would have a chance to fish so I didn't put the line on yet plus the line I do have on my reel already is like brand new and I don't want to remove it! And it's not easy getting out on the water when you work so much in the summer! I HOPE I remember how to fish... |

Welp, I went out to fishing yesterday. Too bad when I arrived at the lake... It was frozen! Only the north end was still able to be fished but it was virtually inaccessible on foot. So we left and went to a small flowing stream and fished for a while with no success. We then traveled to a river to fish with just as much success... Oh well! It's not about the catching it's about the experience right!? |

Oh boy...sounds like something that would happen to me! But you're right, just gettin' out there is most of the fun. |

The only really expensive piece of ice gear is an auger, and you can often go out a bit later and find some abandoned holes that you can open up. While ice rods and tip ups are nice, you can work through the ice with your regular tackle if you have some shorter rods. It's not ideal, but is a way to find out if you want to persue ice fishing. |

When I first started to really get into fishing years back, I thought those small ice fishing rods were for little kids... |

Anyone have any suggestions for a daily cheap manual ice drill that will work well and last long. |

ariess: Think about stream trout fishing. Even in northern state there are streams that stay open for at least part of the winter, and in some places they're designated for winter fishing, catch-and-release, barbless-only. Small minnowbaits work well. Check out this opportunity where you live.

Yea, I am based in NYC and really would love to take a trip up to salmon river. On long island there are some trout/steelhead streams that I'd like to winter fish too. |
