The palomar knot is a 100%l ine knot, the salt water fishing knot is huge!!!! 1/4 to 1/2 knot. if the palomar knot is 100% strenghth line knot why use the other one when fishing salt water. The salt water knots are huge and alot fancier, but is there a real purpose for this?

    Respectfully,

Donald, not all knots popular with saltwater anglers are big and/or complicated to tie. I'm still trying to learn to tie the Bimini Twist without a reference guide at hand, but this is a great knot that offers tremendous strength. Truth is, I use the Palomar for many if not most of my personal saltwater applications, and have been very happy with the results. It can be tough to tie with heavyweight lines, however, and comes with limitations when adding leaders to the mainline and other crazy things, so it makes sense to learn a number of different knots. Like the open mindset here. Although I use a Palomar for 95% of my non line to line knots, there is always room for something better, I just haven't found it yet! The heaviest mono I tie is 40#, and the Palomar works fine for me, although it is a bit of work at that test. Most of my knots are tied in 4-12# test, and the bulk of those in braid or superline. I am going to try the Fishing Fool this season, but as easy as it is to tie a Palomar, I need some convincing!

Agreed.  I tie the Palomar on almost everything, non-line-to-line also.  I do know how to tie several other knots, but still haven't found a knot that is as simple, yet as strong as the Palomar..

Watching the Knot Wars, or any knot testing for that matter... I'd really like to know how they rate a knot failure.  I mean, if the knot doesn't hold tight, slips or breaks at the point of the knot.. that to me is a knot failure.  Right?!

I never did get around to trying the Fishin Fool, but this year I started using more octopus hooks, and found a 6 wrap Uni snell knot to work very well with these hooks, it keeps the pull on the hook inline with the shank. Tom
