My Wife has become an avid fisherman as she has had a good teacher! One lesson was learned the hard way,
which brings me to this funny, sad ,mad, with a happy, ending story. We were fishing on Coralville Lake
located just south of Cedar Rapids Iowa. The catfish were feeding and taking our bait very aggressively. I had worned
Janet(loving wife)not to lay her pole down in the boat unattended or unsecured in sum way. She was fishing with her favorite rod and reel combo( an original Johnson Century reel with matching green pole)that she had before we were married (approx. 20yrs ago!)and while netting a fish for me it shot straight out of the boat! All we heard was the splash.
Wow she got upset, she was mad, she was sad, and not a peep from me as I looked into her teared, red angry eyes. I could only hope for the best when I rigged up a new rod and reel combo(off lesser ventage)for her to continue fishing.
And to her credit she jumped right back in the saddle again and begain fishing with no hesitation.
A couple hours later the catfish bite had slowed a little bit so I moved down river at least two miles and set up again just north of the Mahaffey bridge in the no wake area. It didn't take long for the first bite to occour and Janet set the hook on a very nice fish. During the onsewing struggle to reel the monster to the boat it displayed increadable strength in its short burst's of energy and lengthy runs. When she finally had it whipped and as I dipped netted the 10lb+ cat there was a line hanging over and around the top of the fish she just brought in. Yep you got it! I first pulled one end and realized it was the end with the fish still on. I Immediately released that side grabbing the other and told Janet I thought we had caught her pole. She acctually scolded me stating that it was not nice to tease her as she was still in grief over her loss.
Well as you might guess when the pole accually appeared from the depth's of Coralville lake and I reeled in the 9lb blue cat that had taken the rod earlier, I was a Hero!
