    Lake Lillinohna Connecticut. May 2010

My son, 20 years of age started bass fishing a few years back and decided to get competitive in the sport. Bought a Bass Tracker with a Hummingbird.  Myself, a trout fisherman knew absolutely nothing about bass fishing and the kid suggested I give it a try. Not enough tackle or gear for two he instructed me to go to Dicks Sporting Goods and grab some gear. So I did. I showed up on the boat with the perfect small stream trout set up. He started laughing telling me I wasn't gonna catch anything with the type of fishing we were going to do. I laughed and stated "Never Underestimate Dad."

Couple hours into the day I didn't catch a thing except for a few small baby bass, perch and sun fish as he pulled in 2/4 pound smallies.

I was having fun and didn't care. I figured I'd gear up the following day. It's early spring and we found this nice spawning ground and he's catching more bass than I've ever seen. Using a red and white Mepps I hooked onto a six inch bass in clear water about six feet deep. As I', reeling it in I looked out about thirty feet and could no longer see my fish. It swam under a really big log. I asked the kid to move a little closer so I could retrieve the lure. After a second or so I realized that the log was moving with us and and that the line tension was not giving. Frustrated I yanked the rod. Suddenly the rod yanked back and the log shot under the boat and my rod tip went with it.

I'm like, I think I got a big fish. Excitedly the kid came to help me. I tightened the drag on my trout set up which slowed the fishes decent, tired it and started to bring it up. About ten minutes of fighting it the fish finally broke water next to the boat. The kid reached over to lift it and suddenly jumped back stating "That Fish Has Teeth." Carefully we managed to get a 28" Northern Pike into the boat.

Holding it up with my trout pole for a picture the pike sprung back to life and jumped out of my hands back into the water.

I turned to my son and stated "Never Underestimate The Power of Dad."

I have yet, to this day "NOT" caught a bigger fish than he as he regularly pulls in 5/6 pound bass.

Great story, Glad your son has fast reactions. You try to lip a N. Pike and you might point with a finger considered unaproepriet.I like father and son story's. They last forever in your mind. Dad's been gone for over 10 years but every time I pick up A pole he might as well be sitting next to me Jstratton3

I was at our local tackle store today! They just put up a Mounted Northern Pike about 30" in length! I was in awe at the number of teeth in those things.
