I've refered to this several times in other topics, but now I will explain it more in depth.  In late July, I went to visit family down in Alabama.  They (at the time) lived on Edgewater Lake, a lake known to be good for catfish and filled with lunker carp.  A few hours after I arrived I made my first cast with my Diawa spinning combo with 8 lb. line.  For bait, I was using bread molded into the shape of a ball (dough ball).  I had forgotten my baitcaster at home (with 12 lb. line), so I wasn't expecting to land anything big.  After a minute or two I got my first bite.  I set the hook, but the fish got off.  This happened about three of four more times before I decided to switch tactics.  I decided to use less bread, so that my hooksets would be more affective, and started chumming with whole slices of bread.  After I through the pieces of bread into the water, the surface erupted!  I then through my baited hook into the middle of the feeding frenzy and before long, had a fish!  I pretty sure I had a catfish at first (well...I was hoping I had one), but soon I realized that it was a really nice carp.  The carp did not give up easy and the fight lasted around five minutes.  When I finally got the fish to shore, I lifted it up out of the water and unhooked it.  The massive fish was probably around 3 feet long and approximately 20+ lbs (it was dark and I didn't have a scale or measuring tape with me).  Then all of the sudden, the fish had a surge of energy and I dropped it right back into the water.  It was gone the next instant.

Fishing the Hoosic River in Buskirk, NY i've had many a carp experience. Saw one under a large garbage bag floating downriver where his back, tail and head was visible (in other words he was bigger than a 30 galon garbage bag), estimated him to be at least 50 lbs. This summer had one drag my pole into river so fast that i was lucky to step on pole in 3' of water as i stopped to pick up pole he snapped 8 lb. line. As a kid i used 50 black braid i'd bring them to shore but net too short they'd dash out to center river current and snap the 50#test like it was string.
