a local pond to go fishing. Most of our time was spent in this area because we had to rely on pedal power to get us there. This was a pond of a couple of acres size and was owned by an old farmer. We used to call him farmer Brown and the pond was known as brown’s pond. This was private property and When I was young, around 7th or 8th grade my best friend and a couple of his other friends used to go to it was rumored that if you were caught there you risked having your tail end peppered with rock salt from a 12 gauge. This pond was out in the open so it was risky business to try and fish it. We did fish it a couple of times but most of our time was spent on the other side of the fence were the pond emptied out of a large pipe into a small stream. This stream started out with a large deep pool with overgrown trees around it. It was a very pleasant place to wet a line. We usually fished with a nightcrawler with a bit of split shot for weight and occasionally caught a small rainbow that escaped from the pond above. The stream continued on through a cow pasture dotted with sage brush. It was mostly a slow moving stream with numerous undercut banks and was small enough to leap over in most spots. One day we decided to fish further down in this section. Frankie tossed his worm in next to an undercut and a large rainbow immediately hit. It turned out to measure around 24”. We were truly amazed at the size of the fish coming from such a small stream. It was probably the biggest fish any of us had caught up to that age. A few minutes later Frankie landed another that was close to that size. As far as I know none of us in that group ever caught another one that size in that stream again. This area has since been replaced by a residential subdivision.
