What is the best knot for connecting 50# florocarbon leader to 20# braided mainline.  One mentioned to me was the "cigar knot" but I am unable to find  any resource to how it is tied.

You are looking for the Seaguar Knot. Google Seaguar Knot and there is a how to. Why are you using a 50# leader? Tom

I would go with the modified albright knot over the Seaguar Knot for those lines mentioned. I've often thought about trying out a knot called the FG knot, but it looks like a lot of work.

I would go with a nail knot partly because I find them reliable and partly because I don't use very fancy knots.

Every time I have seen anyone other than a fly fisherman use a nail knot it has slipped. I have had my best luck with the Uni-Uni knot even though it wasn't the top finisher in Knot Wars last season. I find it reliable and easy to tie correctly. It also slips through guides quite nicely. Tom

I use the Albright Knot always....I use 30lb power pro braid as my main line and depending on what speices of fish, I'll use 50lb fluro (for Stripedbass/blue fish) or sometimes 40 or 30 for Seabass/porgies/fluke/flounder. I use Uni Knot for tying my main line to terminal tackle (swivels, clips). The Albright has never failed me. Either has the Uni.

Thanks Tom. I feel stupid when I realized "cigar" and "Seaguar" were one in the same. I heard it said and therefore it was assumed "cigar".  Anyway, The reason for the 50# braid  is a 2 leader rig for throwing 2 flukes at once. Using the 50 lb  is so the stiffness keeps the 2 leads from twisting  together on the cast and also allows the two flukes to  flutter and glide separately. Basicly,  slide a barrel swivel onto the braid and then tie  another barrel swivel to the main line braid.  Connect 2 floro leaders  to the barrel swivels,  one about 24" the other about 36" long  . Use 2 EWG #4 hooks and rig 2 flukes.  Its a bit hard to cast, but is a deadly rig for schooling bass and stripers. I used a similar rig just using 12# mono main line and leaders also.  It worked well and I have caught doubles and single fish WHEN THE LEADERS DID NOT TWIST TOGETHER.  That is the reason for the heavy floro.  A bonus is the invisibitity of the leaders.  The double- action flukes will sure get the attention of any fish with sight .

The floro to braid  knot is used for  trolling deep for big stripers in "snaggy "  river and resevoir creeks.

I watched the same TV show you did and heard 'cigar' the first time or two also! I was able to translate from the 'down home' a bit later in the day when I picked up a spool of leader material. If that defines stupid you have a lot of company, mostly north of the Mason-Dixon. The heavy leader makes sense now that I understand what you are doing with it! Kinda like a crappie rig. Tom

I used a uni to uni for a long time and occasionally had trouble, probably due to my knot tying skill. Last year I switched to the Alberto and it's great. Easier to tie, improved knot strength and it goes thru the guides better. I love it!!

Alberto is another name for a modified Albright knot. Search Alberto Knot, it pops up. I have tried it and found it very difficult to keep the wraps from crossing over resulting in a weak knot, so I went back to the uni-uni. Tom

Albright knot is the only one for me for that use.

I've been experimenting with the Albright for braid to mono/fluoro and I like it except for one issue that's happened a couple times lately.  The braid seems to get caught under the tag end of the leader at the knot and causes the knot to stick out at a perpendicular angle to the line.  Maybe I'm leaving too much tag end (<1/8") but I'm always worried to cut it too close in case the knot slips.

Rooger: I use the uni to uni knot, but I have been experimenting with super glue. It really smooths out the knot and probably helps the knots strength too. Only problem is after 10 or 12 casts its gone! I've tried a few different glues but no change. Does anybody know a good brand of super glue for these braid to floro leaders?

I have rarely used glue on a knot for the reason that after the line flexes a few times, the glue is gone or cracked badly. I have heard of, but never tried, a special type of super glue just for fishing knots. Any feedback?

One of the glues I tried was for fishing, I think berkley made it but I can't remember for sure. It really doesn't make any difference because it didn't work any better!
