i live in southeast texas and been a life member for 2 years and the other day i caught a fish in a family pond that looks and acts the way a muskie does its very aggesive and just eat everything that it could that was in my tank is there a southern muskie or is it possible for eggs to migrate with birds because the ponds only 5 years old and only has perch ,bass and catfish i returned the fish back to the pond and have noticed a few more of the fish along the banks lately this fish grew 3 inches in two weeks time and was very beautiful |

this sounds like it is a chain pickeral. a small pike/musky shaped fish
that grows, at least here in michigan, 12" average. i have seen some as
large as 25", but most are between 10 to 14 inches. these fish are very
good eating and they don't have the bones in them like pike do.

http://www.landbigfish.com/fish/def...m add a book mark to this , and pass it on when someone else needs to find a unidentified fish. this is a redfin pickeral not listed for texas, the chain piceral is more comon to your area, the record is 4.12#s for TEX and there is a grass pickeral for TEX that has a record of 7.4oz it sounds pretty small there may be more piceral than the three listed, but you can find them on that site, i only check the state record to see if one has been reported, so it does not mean a diffrent type has not made it in to your fishin hole... hope it helps, fish on! |

IF it is a pick or pike they will eat everything in the pond until they starve or you catch and kill them all which is nearly impossible. The only other choice is to poison the pond and start over if these fish are undesirible. |

Probably a gar, the south is full of them. They get pretty big and are extremely aggressive. I had one in an aquarium that would try to remove fingers every time I tried to clean the inside of the glass.

No Musky that I've seen here...been back in S.A. for 15 years, and not one sited. The temps here must be way to warm for them...But, we do have some hellacious stripers, reds, and excellent sizes on cats...... |

It does sound like you have Gar there, just like the others mentioned. Hope to see you at our annual Texas meet, perhaps even the chapter meetings and events.

It is hard to know what the fish is if we don't have a picture. It sounded like a Gar, but I was not sure about it. We have Alligator Gar in the waters I fish, and like to catch me some of those some time. I heard that they are great fighters. hey Kai hope you git a few more peeps for your meet! i love what you are doing!!! Thanks for the nice words. Perhaps you will make it down here some time in the future and join our meet. They will be 4 days from next year on, instead of the 3 that we have now. That would make it worth the trip fo any one. We also have monthly chapter meetings, which would be more appealing for members in the greater San Antonio area. Hope to get those numbers up as well. Kai; Life Member;

yep they fight good! i never had a gar on a fishin pole tho`, but i have caught some big un's( to me) on jugs as kids, when a fish can hold a 2 litter jug down for 10 miutes and travel a quarter mile it is awsome! as the fish hears your boat comin it dives and if you see the jug drop effortlessly to the depths just shut down the motor and wait, bring the binoculars for the re bound, a 20+# is able to do it let alone some of those 100+# beast , you might want to up size to a 55gallon jug if you want big ones to come back up the same day!lol... um some guys put a jug float or ballons on there baited rigs here, i bet it would help fight a huge fish! keeping pressur on the hooks/fish but not so much on your rig... can you imagine a 100# gar hit a lure on 10# test, it would spool ya, unless you use you boat as the jug and let him pull you around a bit! then to regain line run with him! i can't wait for that 20+# striper in the canoe, hell a 7# striper takes us for a ride! yep kia, i'll defenantly try to make a meet someday! I love TX sept for the heat, ticks & driving threw it, kinda like CA drive all day and never leave the state! i lived there for a few years as a kid & i got a few spots i'd like to revist.... |

Now that I know that you live so close, you have no excuse to not come to the annual meets or chapter events. LOL Just kidding, but I sure hope to meet you some time soon and that you consider joining us at the meets and/or chapter events. Perhaps we can fish together some time, like at Calaveras or Braunig. I Also hope that you join our forum. There is a lot more info on the annual meet and the chapter status then what anybody will find here. Kai; Life Member;

Now it could very well be a musky. But ive been hearing some stuff about the northern snakehead. Apparently these fish are EXTREMLY aggresive. The have a mouth full of teeth and look similar to musky. Well people have been smuggling these fish into america. And heres the scarey part, they can take over and eat an entire lake in only ten years. They lay 1500 eggs and spawn 5 times a year. Thats not good. But these fish can walk on land! They have a seperate lung that allows them to breathe air. They can survive out of water for NINE HOURS!!! Thats pretty amazing. If caught lots of lakes will tell people to kill them. Heres a few pictures. Very painfull bites Very dangerous fish. Covan Master |
