I've seen shad jumping and assume it's a feeding frenzy down below, bass or walleye rounding up some dinner.  But I've thrown spinnerbaits, tubes,ratl- traps almost everything through the jumping shad and have never been able to catch a fish!   Are there any tips as to what to throw into the feeding frenzy to catch one?

i think you guys are talking about the same fish but in diffrent ways , little sad school so when somthing hunts them like striper or bass they tend to go air born and splash the surface(suside by air or to be eatin>>?), if this is what you have seen then it is most likely a feeding frenzy going on... i seen it up here last year, i was thorwing big rainbow trout lures and topwater lures for striper, nothin! then i seen the striper push in a school of shad, i grab'ed my tackle bag and matched the hatch sort of speak pulling out a 5" lure in a blue/silver, it's work'd! the striper push the shad right up in front of me, i  just tossed my lure about 4' out in to the ball of shad (suspending lures rock) my lure set there with a  few taps, then  a striper came charging in, but just stop'd short(i think it new somthing was wrong) at the same time the striper was checking out my lure another striper came over the top of the other and took the lure, i think the one who stole the lure didn't git a good look @ it he just thought the other would eat it first so he hit it hard....all this was 3~4' out of the bank in 3'-4' of crystal clrear water, awsome to see & wish i could do it again...

Match the hatch! find the size & color of what they are feeding on! also on a frenzy like that topwater could work but more like a buzz bait than a pop~R

mike s lets see those pix when you git um!!!

troutchaser i hav heard of monster shad and would love to see one too! don't for git to take a pic either, and check the cali record!

Try throwing jigging spoons.  The spoons will sink faster, and can be fished in short jerks, that will produce strikes.  Many times, even though the shad are breaking the suface.  The fish feeding on them, are four, to five foot below the surface.  I used to have the same problem with not getting hits.  That was because I was fishing right on top.  While the bass, stripers, or what ever were a little deeper.  Thread fin(yellow tail), gizzard, and American shad, are all members of the herring family.  The gizzard, and thread fin, are the most commin bait fish in the larger rivers, of the U.S.    The American shad is now found on both the east, and west coasts.  But were orginally from the east coast.
I now have at least 4 rods ready to cast.  That is because the jumps do not last long.  I cast until I hook a fish, boat it. Then grab the next rod.  When the jump is over, or the rods are full, I then unhook the fish. And get ready for the next jump. Which is easy, because the hooks are barbless.

over here on the Mississippi the stripers make the shad do that during certain times. i tried to match the hatch, but had no luck. what i did have luck on was a light jig with a white curlytail grub. just throw right in the middle of the shad, let it go down a couple feet and reel er' in. we caught an unbelieveable amount of stripers that week. good luck
