I fugured this is the best place to ask and get honest answers. I am heading back up to Pulaski, NY 1st week of Oct to do Salmon fishing. Was there last year and got a few hook ups. That was my first time Salmon fishing, I am a bass fanatic and just about any other freshwater fish but bass and then muskys/pike. So my question is I want to start putting my tackle together and try to save some money as it is a bit expensive to get it there, So as for hooks what size? What size weights? I used my bass weights which seem to work ok but I figured I want to do it right this year and stay in NYS regs as well. Also bait, I have been told they don't bite once heading up the river which I have read other wise so I ask you my fellow anglers what should I be using to help put the odds a little better in my favor and my boys who are going with me? Thanks in advance for your help. If you have a soucre to order things let me know as well. Thanks

I don't fish NY so I can't help with regs, but Lake Ontario salmon can't be too different than out local Lake Michigan fish. If you will be fishing a river the fish are in spawn mode that time of year and will not be eating. That said, they will commit to a reaction strike. I would try medium sized cranks that run in the top half of the water column. Cast upstream and retrieve down. Firetiger is a good all around choice for color, maybe some of the local guys can steer you better. Tom

Thanks for the info. I know where we fish it is kinda hard to run a crank as most people are right on top of each other. But I may bring one along just in case I get a spot early where I can get a few casts out. Thanks again.

In Washington, fishing the rivers I use three methods. Mix it up, color wise. First method are corkies in 3/8 and/or smaller. Drift them or add them to bait. Second is yarn. make a yarn fly, and bait or sent. You can even add a corky. Third, Spoons, thin, light spoons like Dick Nites, Needle Fish and Little Cleos. The first two, you will need to add weight about 12-18in above the spoon.
Buy a bunch of three way swivels, pincel lead(hollow if possible), and or sergical tubing to fit lead. Check out this site, it will help you out as it did me. http://www.steelheaduniversity.com/

No, not from Washington, but I do claim it home. I was stationed on the island 99-03 and in Everret on the Lincoln 06-10. I should be up that way this spring to fish for chinook. will drop you a line when heading that way. Tried to send a PM but it could not locate you.
