I was just wondering, does anyone else still fish with these old reels? I use this one for small carp(under 10lbs.) at the city park...and it works great. Never backlashes, has a good clicker, those little handles can be challenging though!

Boy that is a classic! Reminds me of my first reel, an Ocean City levelwind. Unlike many my age I did not start with a Zebco 202, that was my second reel.

I ask for a Supreme for Christmas in 1949 and got a Pflueger Rocket.LOL And enough VELUX line to spool it up. But the Rocket was better than the reel I had been using.
I think it was a JC Higgins. It had green plastic handles. Not a level wind. Those were the end days of Cuttyhunk line and gut leader. Momo had just started to come out after the war.
And I had hardly any money. And neither did my folks. Shotgun shells and fishing gear was what was under the tree. Oh, for the memories.

I have a South Bend Spin Master II Pro Series spinning reel that I bought new in 1965 that still works perfectly, and I used this reel in fresh, brackish, and salt water and it has no rust whatsoever on it. I just retired it out of respect last year.

These old reels work forever because they're built like tanks. The ones that were oiled regular are even still tight! Lots of Penns, Pfluegers, Abu Garcias, and many others you can still get parts for(if they need them). Most times though, a good lube and cleaning and they're good to go.

Hey, mo65, what's up? I'm with you... the old timers are tough and de-pendable. I LOVE fishing with the vintage stuff! I also liked the Supreme over the Akron or Summit cuz it had a flush-mounted spool lip, and the line wouldn't get wedged between the spool and the sideplate like it did on the Akrons and Summits. I finally quit mono altogether on the ol' Akron and put Spiderwire on it... wasn't as temperamental then. I also preferred the freespool Supreme. You could cast it either way (with or without the handle engaged) and it had a drag system on it (an external drag, but a drag nonetheless). Otherwise, it was identical to the one in your picture. Keep fishing with the old stuff, brother! Tight lines.
Keep the hooks sharp, the line fresh & have fun fishing. God bless you. -Sonny

Yep...that reel I have pictured has the external drag. It's called a "Cub" handle. See those six little screws on that plate? Adjusting the tension of those gives a wide range of slip points. It works very well! Mine doesn't have free spool, so you better get those fingers out of the way when you cast. It's impressive how far I can toss it with a 3/8oz. weight.

I just picked up a real clean Summit in the original box $36 on eBay. It's not for fishing, it's for my vintage collection. Maybe I'll post a pic when I get it. Thanks for noticing the old Supreme!
