I learned the best way to get a backlash out. When you get one, pull the line out until it stops (dont jerk on it!!), when it stops tighten your drag really tight, put your thumb right before the spot where the line is caught and push down a good bit, then make a couple turns of the reel while applying good pressure on the spool, after this pull the line out and it will pass through, repeat until backlash is out. I was amazed to see such a simple solution to a complex problem. I have fixed some real rough backlashes before, but this way is neccessary and works especially when night fishing. JUST DON'T FORGET TO LOOSEN YOUR DRAG AFTERWARDS.
Let me know if this works for you.

I use this tip alot. It seems to always work for me. OTHER TIP I have learned- I put a peice of electic tape after 50% of my line when I put new line on. That way when if I backlash it will only effect half of my line.

BassWhisperer, I have a large spool capacity reel I use for catfishing that I do the tape trick on, and you're right, it can keep a small overrun from becoming a huge tangle!
