largemouth the color of the green and the black, if it was a smallmouth it would be more brown or bronze

I would say it is a Kentucky Spotted. Notice that the jaw does not extend behind the eye, and I bet a close inspection would reveal a tooth patch on the tounge. Yes, the color is wrong for a smallie.

its a largemouth. if you look the corner of the jaw extends behind. you want to look at the big corner of the jaw.

Chances are that it is a Largemouth Bass, due to the fact that Spotted Bass are quite rare.  Unless you were fishing in a waterway that is known to hold them, it's quite unlikely that it's a Spot.  It's definately not a Smallmouth Bass because it's mouth is too large.  Other than that, it's coloration is like that of a Largemouth.

    Nice fish!

Spotted bass are certainly not rare around here! In fact I would bet that 40% of the fish in my local pond are spots!

Spots aren't common in most places, but there are a few places where they are quite common.  That's what Pegsguy is refering to.

Where are you located essexangler? Maybe they are Guadalupe bass...or possibly Suwannee bass...these are both a smaller bass. They are river bass also. See how your fishes lower jaw and belly have that turquoise hew? that is a characteristic of Suwannees.

I'd have to guess it's a Spot, the jaw just doesn't look perfectly right for a largemouth. Some location information would certainly be useful though, that seems to be the only hindrance for a final call on this one.

Hey guys...lots of you have said its a spot...but I don't think so. Spots don't have "spots" below their dark horizontal line, and they are known for their white bottom half. Look at the photo of a spot below:

Now look at the fish in question:

It doesn't really have a dark horizontal line...looks to be just speckled. Hopefully essexangler will give us a location, that would help a lot.

A sure way to tell the differance between a largemouth and a spot. A spotted bass has teeth on it's tongue and a largemouth doesn't. Thats the quickest way I know of.

The best way tell is if you see how far the jaw extends.  If it doesn't extend past the eye, then it isn't a Largemouth Bass.  The photo in question is a definately a Largemouth Bass.  No doubt!
