Topwaters can catch bass through the entire open water season, but summer is the most popular and easiest time.  My favorite presentation is a weedless frog over surface vegetation on bright hot days.

If the bass are really active, a buzzbait is hard to beat. It covers a lot of water quickly. Other than that, I use a Zara Spook or a Pop-R. In real thick slop, a weedless frog is a great choice also.  Early morning and late evening seem to be the best times and in the Summer to Early Fall for the seasons.  Good luck.

i like using the Dying Flutter by Heddon in stained water, the double prop adds a lot and helps the bass locate it in conditions as such, whether is an aggressive retrieve, or subtle, its a very versatile lure.

Arbogast Hula Poppers and Jitterbugs, Rainey's Saltwater Soft Foam poppers (fly rod), Spro Bronze Eye Frogs. All in black, scale, and frog patterns. I'll fish them any time of day, the black ones at night. I also like white Strike King buzz baits .

Ever try a Creek Chub Knucklehead? It's a popper that is jointed and has a tail feather on the rear hook. Another favorite is the Cotton Cordell Pencil popper. These dudes will cast a mile! Then there's the Smithwick Devil's Horse and the Heddon Crazycrawler.....pick a favorite? I don't think I can do it.

if you like the zara spook if you can find them try a vixen it used to be made by reaction innovations its much better than a spook it has a different sound to it and the hook up ratio is a little better. Buzzbaits are always good or maybe a lunker punker. good luck. Scott

My favorite topwater will depend on conditions. Waking a worm may be just the ticket in some of the little shallwo back water ditches. Other times there isn't much that will beat a popper. I get a 3.99 1/4 ox popper from Bass Pro Shops for 90% of my popper fishing and then swap out the hooks for one size larger Excalibur on the front and own size larger Owner Tournament Trailer on the back. If I want to upsize I'll usually go with a Chug Bug. It will walk well, and it pops nicely they way I like with a splish and spray as opposed to a splunk. Once in a great while I need distance and white pearl for busting baitfish. Then I break out my Rio Rico. I think they have the best White Pearl, but sadly it doesn't hold up very well for such an expensive lure. After 15 or 20 fish its peeling pretty badly. Just fish. No trees or rocks.

I'm not a big walk bait fan, but if I was I'ld go with a Gunfish.

In the early photo period I switch back and forth between a buzzfrog and a popper these days, although if bites are explosive and posititve I'll sometimes switch to a buzzbait.

Sometimes during the dog days I'll flip a Spro or Bobby's frog back in the pockets, even at mid day and in the early afternoon.

If a swim bait or a jerk bait was working in an area earlier, I will almost always go with a buzzfrog during the evening photo period.
