Gas Outboard for Canoe

    What's by best choice? I've narrowed my search down to a 2.5 HP 2 cycle or a 2.5 4 cycle outboard for my canoe. The 2 cycle thru ioutboardmotors.com using an aircooled Bridgestone engine,; the 4 cycle is a Suzuki water-cooled.. The 2 cycle is lighter and $175 less expensive.  the Suzuki is heavier. I do most of my fishing on a small river...sand bars, snags, etc. Any suggestions?[script removed]

    Is your canoe a square stern or pointed? If it's square I think either would work, if pointed, I'd go with the lightest weight option.

    I had an old  '55 4hp Evinrude on my square stern for a bunch of years and it was great. Weight is not your friend on a canoe. Being light is your first concern, horsepower is secondary. You just want to get around, not water ski.

    It's a standard 15 1/2 foot Macinac...I've been using a  1972 1.2 hp (tanaka/gamefisher/auqubug parts) for several years but it barely crawls upstream in the river current and finding a spare prop is rarer than hens teeth.. I'm just a little concerned about repairs..I do have a suzuki dealer in town...on the other hand, a 2 cycle is almost a no brainer for repairing it yourself. The 2 cycle motor is a 55cc bridgestone...I'm leaning towards the 2 cycle at 20 lbs over the suzuki at 30 lbs.
