I have a 16foot 1981 Lowe with an 8 horse 4stroke Honda and a 45lb Minkota troller there are some good sized lakes in my area never had any probluems. Sometimes I need to slow down they can get a little rough at times from bigger boats stirring up the water or a windy day. As far as your gas motor don't go used I did that with my first motor 85 Johnson 15 horse boy was that a mistake spent more time fixing  it than it spent in water.  MCOPELAND1

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't a Min-Kota 65# a 24V motor? I have never seen a 12V motor over 55lbs thrust. A 3hp gas motor, especially one with an integral tank, would probably work much better for you. Biggest problem with using an electric trolling motor is that they are just not "propped" for speed.
