I hear alot of you saying hot dogs work for catfish. I have two questions. Are you catching channels with them or just bullhead? Also how big of piece of dog do you use? Thanks in advance. BTW I am from NW Iowa and I catch a lot of 5 to 10 pound catfish on a regular basis using liver or stink bait depending on what lake I am in. But hotdogs would be easy and fun for me to use with my 4 year old son when we go fishing.

Mmmm, cheese dogs. I just cut about cubes, so maybe about 1 inch? I suppose I could catch bullheads with it too, but never tried it.

For channel cats, I like to use frozen squid purchased at asian supermarkets.

I use hot dogs(cheapest kind) cut in 1" bits. I marinate them in cherry KoolAid non sweetened and minced garlic. Works very good on channels. I have caught from 1lb to at least 5lb channel on it.

bassmaster: Almost any grocery store should have the cheese hot dogs, Oscar Meyer makes them and I'm sure so do the other 'dog companies. Saw them yesterday at Wallyworld. Tom

My wife used to houseboat with the family a lot as kid. She swears by hot dogs for channel & blue cats. They had a grill on the houseboat and would cook dogs for a meal. They wouldn't eat all of them, so the hot dogs would sit out in the sun for a while even overnight. Next afternoon they would be good and ripe, she would use a free line and a hook, drop them to the bottom under the houseboat and have dinner for that night.

any tips on how to fish a dog on a small riverfor channels? Would you just let it drift down through the holes or would you fish it behind a sinker of some sort?

I use hotdogs, with cheese... If you would like to hook a big one, soak them in garlic over night.

I used to use hot dogs for cats but it caught me more turtles than fish. I did catch a 15lb snapping turtle with it. That was more fight out of water than in it.

I recently pulled a 4lb Channel Cat out of the river where I live in NM. I used rotten chicken livers which they seem to love. My brother began to gut it and we found the stomach surprizingly full so i had him slice it open. Out fell a full size hotdog! Thanking the fish, I promptly cut it (the hotdog) up and began using it as bait!

You must be fishen the Schuykill river or Blue Marsh.  I just caught a 20lb'er down at black rock on thursday. We've been getting fish,  thats flatheads from around 8 lb's to over 40 lb's. channels go from 5 to 15 lb's. I use live green sunfish. try cutting them to get them to bleed it works good. I've caught gar on hotdogs. you have to let them run and get it down or you won't hook them. another good place is where we fish for stripers in Harve De Grace. around the train bridge. mainly channels.  Check my web site out and leave your comments. If you need info on any where drop me a line.

I've tried using hot dog sections. Caught about twenty bullheads and only one Channel Catfish!

Lately I've been catching quite a few Channel Cats off of hot dogs. Maybe because they are the cheesy kind?

I've tried hotdogs but never had any luck with them. I've always done well with chicken liver wrapped in nylon to keep it in place or cut sucker. I do keep hearing people doing well with the hotdog though.

Back years ago my Father and I got into jug fishing. We used hotdogs cut into 1/2" slices and then soaked them in Dales steak sauce. These would have a very long shelf life if kept in the frig or on ice. I guess the salt and etc. in the sauce increased the shelf life. We had great results everytime we use them. Quite simple when it comes to baiting up. Hope this helps someone along the way

I've tried fishing with hotdogs but never really had much luck. i normally do pretty good using chicken liver or cut bait. if you fish the same spot alot throwing dog food or fish heads out there normally keep them in that area.

TWO FRIENDS AND I HAVE CLEANED 540 CHANNEL CATS THIS YEAR. WE HAVE CAUGHT MANY MORE BUT HAD TO RELEASE THEM DUE TO LIMITS. WE USE NIGHT CRAWLERS IN THE SPRING AND WHEN THE WATER WARMS UP WE GO TO CHICKEN LIVER. MAY TRY HOT DOGS JUST FOR SOMETHING NEW.

Hotdogs have been my go to bait for years. I prefer the cheese filled kind (WalMart sells them for $1). I have fished them 100 different ways including cooking them, spoiling them, and soaking them, etc. But for me, fishing them right out of the package has been just as effective as any other method. I prefer to fish them on a swivel with a #6 treble. I just take the hook off the swivel, and slide the hotdog down the hook so that it is completely covered with the hot dog, and then put it back on the swivel. The bait stays on really well, and casts easy.

Hot dogs will work for bullheads and channels, but they are very soft bait and will come off the hook easily. I prefer frozen squid. It's very tough and difficult for the fish to steal, and you can't cast hard enough to cast squid off the hook!

I have always heard Hotdogs are a decent bait for catfish. I have been using live minnows with good results though !
