I've never settled for "the best" becuase success can change and preferrences can change depending on water conditions.  For slip sinker, I will prefer to use fresh cut bait overall.  For flatheads, I will prefer to use sucker minnows or bullheads for both slip sinker and slip bobber fishing.  For bobber fishing, I've done well with leeches for channels.

If you have an asian supermarket in your area, frozen squid is a great bait. I caught my largest channel on squid in February. For flatheads I use live bluegill or any sunfish.

If i'm fishing for Channels i will use cut bait with a bobber or tight lining off the bottom. Shovelheads live Goldfish and bluegills. Best I can tell you is to find out what the forage fish is in the waters that you fish and use them for bait thats what the fish are eating anyway Carp cut is also a great bait for Channels

Too bad we can't use carp, goldfish, or bluegills in our state. I would really like to use cut up carp for bait.  I would also really like to use goldeye's too.  Then again, I can't seem to catch one when I need to.

I mostly fish for channels, and usually use chick liver or crawlers. The largest one came on a bullfrog tadpole, 14 # on 5 1/2  ft zebco 202 outfit. Big fun!

In addition to my recent discovery of shrimp soaked in zesty Italian salad dressing, I have done pretty good with Berkely Gulf Alive artifical nightcrawler worms, and also with good ol' hot dogs.

Smelt is a species of small fish, usually no more than 5" long and on the thin side. Can't imagine using them for bait, they are way too tasty! Tom

I'm only an occasional cat fisherman, but I am picking up a thread here. Seems the oilier the bait the better hence the Italian dressing thing. I have heard that bratwurst works, maybe for the same reason? Tom

I usually catch a few chubs from a nearby stream, take them to the big river for channels. Cut chubs works great here in MI. Also recently tried pickled bologna and had a pretty good night.

STIFFER LIVERS: Take a tub of chicken liver, drain off blood, spread out in high walled tupperware(ask your wife FIRST for you married men), sprinkle with vanilla extract, cover with about a half inch of brown sugar, put lid on tupperware, put in fridge(tell kids "it's what's for dinner if they mess with it"),let it chill overnight, take it out of tupperware, put it back in tub, pour some of the syrup on it or put in a big freezer bag. Take it fishin. Cut it with scissors(take your wife's best sewing shears ((teach her to use super braid for her sewing projects)) to cut bait with) just big enough to cover hook. Ya' can cast it a mile and it won't fall off hook. And for some odd reason they like the taste. Wipers like it too. What you don't use, toss it in the freezer. Keeps for a long time.

I fish for catfish alot. There tastes change throughout the season.. But Sonny's stinkbait is one of my normals. It is made in farmington iowa. I also like using big night crawlers. Chad and chicken liver also work around here, but like i said it changes throughout the season.. Bait shops are a good place to find out what fish are biting on.

Best for channel catfish is anything that stinks, such as rotting or aged left over bait, kept in glass jar in backyard burial, and besure you leave the lid a bit loose, unless you want it to blow up. Just add some other items to it. I've used vanilla, cornmeal, anise, and like some, you can cook it on stove or electric burner in yard, and get rid of neighbors, draw cats, and help polute the air. Seriously, you should subscribe to North American Fisherman. I've been using their hints for all sorts of fish for over 50 years, and recording your time, tempature, wind, etc. and keeping good records can help you tremendously to achieve your goal of catching fish every time you go to the bank or on the water. Many good suggestions have been made. Don't use anything that's going to polute the water. But still the number one live bait is crayfish, crawfish, or pincer's. Not enough people use them and they are tremendous for all sorts of fish. Why do you think the manufacture's make look alike lures? Have fun, and don't forget, take a child fishing.

I typically cut a bluegill (3"-5") in half and hook one of the halves through 1 side onto a #2 red baitholder hook. I add as much weight is needed for the conditions.

Best bait? What's handy? Ideally, catch your bait out of the same waters your fish. A long time ago, another member wrote this, Catch a green sunfish/bluegill cut off it's head, skin the body, cut off the fins. Hook the head on one line, weightless (in a lake/pond), & hook the skinned body on another line, weightless. If you're not bit in 20 minutes move and rebait. It's durable, and it catches fish. Like several people said, shad are great, use a cast net to get them. Depending on the size of shad, try the head on one line, guts on another, and if you can have 3, the rest of the body on the last.

I've seen channel cats being caught on liver at a local park, like kids can catch bluegills off a bed, and these were all 2-4 pound eaters. I returned the following week and did nearly as well and added white bass to the mix as well.

I've caught cats on crankbaits, spinnerbaits, huge bass jigs, tiny crappie jigs and even top water poppers.

Freshwater clams make a good bait as well as leeches and worms.

In my experience, you can spend money for cat baits, but it's probably just as easy to get your bait from the water you're going to fish.
