Check the tread about spicing up bait. It's all about what everyone uses for cat fish, and a lot of great ideas I never thought of. |

I like to use chicken liver for smaller channel cats, usually taking pantyhose or something to wrap the liver up with so it wont fly off the hook during cast since it is very soft, any grocery store should have it. also use live 8 inch or bigger sunnies or bluegills for the bigger guys. we caught a 32 lb flathead from the susquehanna river using a large live bluegill. goodluck |

Flatheads- live sunfish or carp.
Channels- frozen squid. Stays on the hook till you take it off. Caught my pb channel on squid in February. Also, squid heads make a great jig trailer for bass. All Asian supermarkets have frozen squid. |

i recently asked the same ? to an older friend of mine. he told me that hes tried leeches raw chicken liver, shrimp soaked in wd-40, chew bubble gum just to the point where its soft but still has plenty of sugar and flavor and put that on your hook. he also said to take night crawlers and dip them in sugar. |

Catalpha worms, chicken livers, sunperch have been my mainstays. After reading the post on ivory soap though I'm gonna give that a whirl and may have a new favorite. |

We usually take some frozen shad, or skipjak from the bait shop as back up. For our main bait we go to a creek and catch some suckers, and we also catch some bluegill out of my pond. If any die they become fresh cutbait, either live or as cutbait they usually catch channels and flatheads. Good luck. |

Hot dogs make a good bait and if the fish ain't bitting. Then you have your lunch. Just remember to bring the buns and mustard. You ALL have a great day. |

Chicken liver, frozen shrimp (thawed of course), hot dogs, and shad guts, but far and away, my favorite is fresh cut skipjack or bluegill. |

I like dough balls and cheese filled hot dogs. You can make dough balls by squeezing bread around a hook. If you want to add extra scent, you can dip it in peanut butter. |

For flatties I like live gills 4"-9" and also I like to use creek chubs up to 9". For chans if I want eaters I like chicken and turkey livers. Cut or live shad, cut gills, uncooked shrimp with sugar and anise oil (check local laws on this, anise oil). Last but not least and I know this is gonna get a few laughs but it really works Gummyworms. |

I don't like that catfish bait you can buy. The only thing I have had luck with is chicken liver that you can buy at almost any grocery store. It is pretty gross but it definitely produces. It's kind of hard to make it stay on a circle hook so sometimes I use a treble hook. Also I've heard people wrap the liver up in a cloth or panty hose and it stays on better. |

Around here, the predominate catfish bait are Creek Chubs, Chicken Liver and night crawlers. As far as store bought stink Bait, it is hard to find all of the sudden, but Sunny's super sticky stink bait is by far the best I have ever used. I am from NE Iowa and fish the Mississippi river some and it is killer there. |

I have been meaning to try some team catfish's sticky stinkbait. It is a kind of dip bait, and they say it works good where they are from. I use Hotdogs, chicken livers, and I am going to try Bluegill both cut and live next time I go. I do the panty hose idea with the chicken liver as well. Works good. |

In a pond setting, I have had quite a bit of luck with cheese filled hotdogs for channels. I have also had good luck with the various punch baits in larger reservoirs such as CJ's and Stick-It for channels. As everyone else has said, live or cut bluegill and shad work great for flatheads. |

Before writing off store bought catfish bait, give Danny King Punch Bait a try. It's the best channel cat bait I've ever used. Not sure what it is, but the cats in my neck of the desert go crazy for it. You can buy it online, just google it. I've also been able to find it at Wal-Mart and Sports Authority. Good luck. |

If you go early in the morning, you can catch som decent Bluegills, cut their heads of behind the gills and hook em through the eye and out the other side with a larger hook. Also let em sit out for a while in the sun, it will make em stink a bit more. Just make sure the bluegills you use are of legal keeping size or you could get fined. Its great because you can have fun getting the bait too. Kinda pumps you up for the day!! I once threw one out and caught a 25lb Blue Cat in 5 mins. And several more throughout the day. Good Luck man. post some pics when you get one!! |

I'm not real big on killing Bluegill, since I fish for them a lot, but I would probably use a few for bait if they were stunted in a certain location. |

WOW there are as many baits as threr are Kats. Heres what I like and use 90% of the time. For chans I like to use live or cut shad (deadly this time of year), and for flatties I like to use live gills as big as I can get along with large creekchubs and suckers. Try diff things and come up with some other things out of the norm and see what happens. Almost forgot lg or xlg shell on shrimp as well. Good luck.

For numbers of eater channel cats I go with Sonny's super sticky cheese flavor (never had luck with blood flavor). For larger stuff I go with bluegill halves, with the heads getting more hits than the tails |

I think Im going to the "pet shop" for my cat bait from now on. NW Arkansas Channel Cat. Other than that, I prefer to use Cut Shad or Cut Sucker for channels and blues. Sunfish/Brem for Flatheads. Here in Madison, Wi I use Nightcrawlers in 3-5 FOW for channels on Lake Mendota. When Im down in Arkansas fishing I use all of the above since "Throw nets" are legal down there but they are ONLY legal for Wisconsin ON THE Mississippi River and NOT any other Wisconsin waters. Not even a bit upstream on ANY Wisconsin river that feeds the Miss. Also in Ark we use what we call "red dance" Kind of a zebra striped 4" minnow with a bit of red on it and/or Shinners, Lem Perch, and creek chubs. Dance and Lem's we gut hook and replace every 15-20 Min or so. Thats my two cents worth, Hope it helps some of you get biggens. |

For CA lake catfish, it seems like cut mackerel is the #1 go-to bait for the larger channels, flats and blues. Locally, crawdads is a big bait for nice channels as well. I'm a fan of cut up beef liver soaked in garlic juice. As a matter of fact, my family will be hitting a local river tomorrow night and right now I have a small tub of cut up elk liver (from my daughter's elk she killed last year) marinating in garlic juice. I'm also picking up some crawdad traps in the morning that will hopefully produce some quality crawdaddies. And, finally, I have a couple of mackerel I bought from a local Asian grocery store that will be cut up as well. I made several short leaders with #4 treble hooks that will allow me to slide the bait down onto all three barbs for better keeping of the bait as well as easier hook sets. We'll have several lines in the water and a co-worker gave me directions to a new spot we look forward to trying out tomorrow evening. Something has got to work, right? |

Any of these suggestions will work better if sprinkled with GARLIC POWDER. I saw an old guy doing this last summer, and I thought "so what...just another dumb trick". That old guy outfished everyone there! Unlike WD40, garlic powder is non-toxic.

Doing that around here would result in a hefty fine. Using turtles for bait is not legal. We have a short and limited snapping turtle season and using any of it as bait is not the thing to do. |

For channel cats, I use these baits in this order: 1. nightcrawlers; 2. dead minnows or cut bait; 3. chicken liver, wrapped in a piece of mesh bag like oranges and other fruits & veggies come in, or tucked into a piece of a woman's old nylon stocking. I use the crawlers most of the time, not only cuz they catch a lot of cats, but because if the cats aren't biting, many many other species will take a crawler, so the day is still productive. For the bruisers like flatheads, I use live bluegill (which are legal to use as bait in the state of Illinois if you catch them in the same water you intend to fish for the cats). Also (if legal in your area) small bullheads and madtom cats (catfish species that are small... under 1/2 lb. for adults) work good if fished live. Flatheads prefer live prey. Happy holidays everybody!!! |

I would have to go with nitecrawlers then bluegill (live or cutbait), but either way, I give em a dunk in some Catfish Charlies blood dip bait. The stuff reeks, but gets results. |

I actually tried both chicken liver AND those Wild Cat brand baits from Wal-Mart last summer on the same body of water. Guess what I caugt with the liver. Turtles, all day long I caught turtles with that. The stink bait from Wal-Mart though, I caught nice sized blue catfish with that from the time I got there to the time I left. One of those was actually big enough that I had to resort to using the drag and tiring it out so I wouldn't break the line off. Let me tell you, that stink bait STANK. I only used about half the bag last year, so I kept the remainder in my tackle box. I opened up the tackle box this afternoon to look for something else, and the small coming from the CLOSED bag was enough to make me gag and make my eyes water. I even had to open the windows to air out the house, and after three hours I can still smell it! I do believe I'll be catching something huge and ugly this spring. Oh, and by the way, as far as I can tell, the turtles and other fish won't touch the stink bait. |

Shad, shad, shad, and then more shad. No wonder the waters around here suck for bass fishing! You are not a fisherman if you use live shad! Check the regs! You cant find a lake that allows live shad for bait! Judging by your pic, you use dead shad, which is fine. |

Shad are perfectly legal in any Illinois water provided they are purchased at a licensed bait dealer or caught on the body of water you are fishing. Catching bait by line, trap or net in one water and then using it in another is not a good idea and illegal in many places. Shad are an ideal bait for the larger species of catfish live, dead or cut up. |

Shad isnt even an option on the waters I fish. There arent any. You can get the preserved ones in some stores but not a popular chioce. Cut bait, live bait and crawlers are the most popular.

Remember keep it natural. Catfish feed on live/injured/dead fish shad/bluegill crawdads helgramites. I fish cut bait either live shad or smash up a bluegill real good with a mallet and cut his belly open. Big bait catches big fish. Buggs Island WR Blue Catfish 147lbs VA State record prior to WR Blue Catfish 109 lbs both caught using natural bait. |

I use fresh shad with a little bit of a twist. If I'm gonna do some night fishing I usually go early in the day and net a few dozen shad to bring home. I put em in a baggie with a little bit of salty water and dump a good bit of garlic powder in with them. Also I put a few drops of tabasco sauce in with it and put em in the garage fridge till time to go fishing. I learned this one from an old man I use to fish with. I'd catch nothing and he would have 2 or 3 poles going crazy all at one time. Seems like catfish like anything with garlic on it

I use Livers. I have tried shrimp and beef liver and the chicken just works better but hard to keep on the line. I plan on trying out bluegills and other pan fish... Most of the guys who go after the Blues here swear but the Gizzard Shad. |

I know its been a little while since this question was asked, but a buddy of mine always used Minnows, and Eel. The Minnows were good sometimes, but in Eastern NC they seem to like pieces of cut eel. Which you can occasionaly catch out of the river, and if not you can buy them at your local bait store. |

Chicken liver for channels and canadian nightcrawlers for blues and flatheads. By the way the tricks for chicken liver staying on the hook longer. Try tying some sewing thread a few times around the bait. I keep a few rolls of it in my tackle box.Color of thread don't matter but I seem to have more luck with the black thread. |

Depends on whether you want to catch small cats or large ones. For smaller channels I like frozen squid, my partner likes cheese hot dogs. Nothing beats live bluegill or small carp for BIG cats. I've NEVER caught anything on chicken liver!

Hello all, i was just reading in my new magiazine called california game and fishing , there is a artical in there about useing bacon for catfish bait. It stated that you should get some put it in a ziplock baggie for a tleast 24 hrs out of the sun so it won't cook it and rap it around your hook and hold on............I was just woundering if any of you has tried this and dose it work??? THANK YOU JOHN |

Jtaylor23, I used to use old bacon for salt water hard head catfish when I was a teenager and it did work. I think bacon is rather expensive catfish bait when there are other baits every bit as good for much less money.

I am sure its been said , as I did not read through all the posts .
My favorite baits are , bluegill fillets , whole or cut shad , cut skipjack , and shad guts .
Another great bait for catching eater size cats is Sonnies dip bait .

personally I like using Shad.Either whole or as cut bait. If fishing for Channels it's usually Sonny's.. Also like using shrimp.bluegills ,Goldfish, and of course worms. Oh yeah don't forget the ASIAN CARP makes great cut bait for Channels and Blues.
