Is it possible to ice fish for catfish or is it too cold for them to bite anything?

There was an In-Fisherman magazine issue a few years ago that talked about people catching catfish through the ice.  I think that was one of the issues that I gave away to my friend.

It's not to cold, I usually pull in one or two with a wax worm on bottom while fishing gills. They haven't been very big, but I havent targeted them either, to try find the bigger ones. I've been wondering about sardines on a tipup for cats in deeper water.

Are we talking about fishing on rivers, pond, or lakes (small or large). If you let me know which you are trying to fish on I can try to help you out. In general cats can be caught in the winter it's just that the method is a little diff for them this time of year. Most of your cats have holed up in the deeper holes this time and they will stack up there. I've fished deep holes on lakes in the winter(found them earlier in the year on the boat) and have pulled as many as 7 or 8 cats out of one spot. Just let me know or PM me and I wil try tol help you out.

channels and bullheads bite good throu the ice. shovel heads or flats will bite but just harder to get to. i don't know about blues......don't have them near me.
we get allot of channels when we are jigging vibes for walleyes tip with minnows.
i know of a guy/kid that shot a rabbit one morning and placed a bit of the stomach from the rabbit on a hook and has caught several channels this winter.

Both channels and blues will bite through the ice.  The catfishing book I have says that you can fish a small jig with a piece of cut baitfish in a hole where they're wintering(this is for channels).  And for blues and channels fish whole or cut shad under a shad school to imitate dying shad.  If you don't have a fishfinder fish a deep hole where you've had sucess in the past.  The key is to fish deep and only use baitfish because they mostly feed on winterkill during this time of year.

Just heard an interview with a local catfish guide on the radio. He fishes open water just below the dams in the first big hole and uses mostly dead bait. This might be an option if you have a river nearby that is dammed. Tom
