I rig both my channel and flathead rods with the same rig, essentially a large Carolina rig, 1 ounce weight for the channels, 3 or 4 ounce weight for the flatheads. Make your leader no more then 18" in length. I use Gamakatsu Octopus circle hooks only, 3/0 for channels, 8/0 for flatheads.
My channel outfit is a BPS Megacast MCM 2000 baitcast reel on a 6'6" Rhino Kevlar medium-heavy rod with Trilene XT mono in 17 pound test.
My flathead outfit is an Penn Peer 209 levelwind reel on a 7' BPS Offshore Angler Trophy Class heavy Boat Rod with BPS Offshore Angler spectrum braid in 80 pound test.

My best rig is essentially a sliding sinker rig just like a Carolina rig. If the bottom is too snaggy I go to a slider float rig. Most of the catfish I catch are no larger than 24 inches. So 1 oz weight and a size 1/0 hook is good enough to start.
