Hello fly fishermen (and women). I'm new to this specialty, just got a new reel today. I am a very experienced baitcast and spinning fishermen and am excited about expanding my skills. My target species will normally be sunfish, crappie, and bass. The booklet that came with the reel recommends line weights 4 through 6. I would like to use floating line, at least at first. My fishing will be primarily from my boat, rarely shoreline. I welcome any advice you all can offer . Thanks friends.

a 6weight will work fine . you may not be able to cast the really big hair poppers but there is alot of stuff you can fish with a 6 weight .
bunny stip flys zonkers woolybugers clousers deceivers pheasant tail nymphs, gold ribd hairs ear nymphs , |

Thanks rodtosser, I was leaning towards the 6 weight line. Thanks for the suggestions concerning flies to use too. Do you recommend all these with floating line?

for the most part i use a wff line weight forward floating if you want to fish deeper then 6 feet down you may consider buying a sink tip .
they should be fine with a floating line some flys are weighted to get down deeper and usually you have a six - 10 foot leader .
most trout flys will catch panfish too so if you look at some of the catalogs you can get a good idea of what to buy . |

Bass or Bass? I am a big Flyfisherman for panfish on the shore i mainly catch them on a bh pheasnt tail nymph(fairly small) deep under a strike indicator as for bass i suggest foam poppers or minoow patterns like the bentback i am not the best flyfisherman ever (well i need a little more work  ) but my tactics do work for me hope this helps and o yeh floating line works good if u need it to sink just add some split shots |

If it"s legal in your area I like to use a large foam beetle and a small dropper fly a foot below the beetle this way the beetle will act as your strike indicator and you will catch fish on it as well some times you can even pick up a double. |

Thanks, a double rig like you mentioned is legal here and when I've gotten everything I need together I will give this rig a try. |

 I use a 3wt for pannies and a 5 for bigger fish. I have caught 2-3lb bass on #12 scuds  and had tiny 'gills try to eat #6 poppers. Go figure  |

The two fly rig storyteller mentioned is a good idea. you may also want to try it with a hopper or even a bass bug with a nyph dropper. I am also sort of new to fly fishing and find tht the double rigs take a bit of practice to cast.

Thanks Brian, I've been planning on using the popper/nymph or dry fly combo when I get the chance. Just can't afford to get out much anymore. Just keeping the roof over our heads is tough in this horrible economy. How i miss the good ol' days of about two years ago! |

I use my 8wt WFF for largemouth and my 6wt WFF for smallmouth. Nice part about bass is they are not leader shy like trout, don't be afraid to use heavy stuff for leader material. I normally use nothing less than 12lb (0X tippet) for Largemouth, and I'll go down to 6lb(4X tippet) for Smallies. Caught this chunk last Sunday night was using a straight piece of 20lb mono for a leader.   |

Some people think I'm nuts, but I like a 1 weight for bluegills. Gives a lot more fun if you like a fight from the fish. And actually managed to pull in a pound and half largemouth on it. Still wondering how I got hooked up to that one. Trout nymphs have been my best flies for bluegills, although some of the really weird stuff you come up with at the vise in the middle of the night tying on small hooks works well too. Gave a really silly lookiAng thing to a guy bobber fishing and about as soon as it hit the water he was hooked up to his first fish ever. As far as bass go, I prefer an 8 weight. Easier to throw big decievers and clousers. Good luck!!!! |

Check out a book called Bluegill...Fly Fishing & Flies by Terry and Roxanne Wilson. It is a great read that you can finish in a couple of days and includes some killer patterns. In my experiences with bluegill, they will nail almost anything that has rubber legs. Very small flies work well too, and I also recommend the foam indicator above a weighted nymph as mentioned by Storeyteller. |

I can bag 30+ Bluegill and Pumpkinseed Sunfish on a good day by using a very small dry fly with an a-just-a bubble.  |

I've really been using my fly rigs .I now have two. A 9' 7 weight for bass, and an 8.5' 5/6 weight for sunfish. I also bought a book that seems like the bass/sunfish bible; "The L.L.Bean Fly Fishing for Bass Handbook" by Dave Whitlock. great book! I also found a great DVD, "Fly Fishing for Bass and Panfish with Skip and Carol Morris" from Fly Fish TV.
