    I've been seeing more and more of my dry flies sinking below the surface and becoming uneffective, so could anyone enlighten me on the best type of fly flotant? I've seen powder, gel, and liquid kinds. Also, how do you apply it? All I've seen is "apply to the hackle" which doesn't help me much because I'm very new to fly fishing and quite honestly don't know what a hackle is.

    If you have ever fished a wooly bugger you will see the hackle is the feathery hairs sticking out from the body of the fly. Buy GINK at a fishing shop or online. This is a great flotant. Apply a thin layer of it on a dry dry fly and rub it in. Now your good to go

    you can also treat them with scotch guard and let dry

    skewl: Go to your local Fly shop and talk to them I'm sure they will have a few Flotants for you to check out and will be more than willing to show you how to apply it to your flys.

    Go to just about any pharmacy and ask for a product named Albolene and get the unscented variety... that jar will last you and a large bunch of family and friends for a life time.  A little dab on your finger melts on contact which you then add to the fly.
