Nope it happens in real life too. I would suggest some casting lessons and the sore neck will go away.

I highly recommend the DVD "Basic Fly Casting" by Doug Swisher from Scientific Anglers. You can order it from Bass Pro Shops online. Money extremely well spent. Happy fishing.

I think this happens to all fly fishermen at least once. make sure you wear glasses also. I am sure it sucks to get a hook in the eye.

At least it didn't get lodged in your eye brow or eye lid.   I've heard of people doing that!

Lessons are great, but I assure you, for less that the cost of one lesson the DVD I suggested will teach you more than you can imagine, and you can review it as much as necessary to remedy your casting problems. I'm just sayin'..........

heh heh,,, cut the hook of an old fly, and practice! sorry to laugh, but it brought back a few memories,, like swiping the hat off the buddy in the back of the canoe,,
enjoy the woods and waters and be safe all, take a kid fishing! or,,, take a kid to a car show!

My first few times out I smacked myself in the back of the head many times. I was told that's why flyfishermen wear funny hats.

Learning to cast with the rod at a 45 degree angle from your body instead of directly overhead  will help alleviate this problem.

ah yes, when i 1st started to fly fish, you guys have said about it all. yes glass and a hat is always good.
try and teach someone how to use a fly rod and be standing next to them.......better be wearing armor.

When practicing fly casting you don't need to use an actual fly. Just tie on a small piece of colorful yarn and eliminate hooking yourself or others until you get more proficient at casting.

Here is what i do for practicing. I take one of my ugly as sin self tied fly's and cut off the tip of the hook at the bend and tie it on for a practice fly. a size 12 or 14 works great for this.
