I borrowed this and edited it slightly, but for all you interested, here are the rules:

There are a lot of new swappers poping up now and that is great I have had a lot of questions sent to me about being in and hosting swaps, so I figured I would post this again. I am not an expert and not the rule of thumb here.

The most important thing I consider in being in a swap is have fun, be patient and communicate, ask for help when you need it.

Here are some helpful things to consider when joining or hosting a swap. John

These are suggestions, that will help Swapmeisters (host) and tiers to have a pleasureable swap and a good time.

It is important that Swapmeisters and Tiers communicate with each other thru PM or on the BB. Swapmeisters it is a good idea to check your post at least once a day, to see if you have any more swappers that have signed up, or in case any of your swappers have questions.

1- Swapmeister- When you post your swap, give a signup deadline, and a deadline for the flies to be in. Give instructions on what type of flies to tie. Give a total on the number of tiers for the swap. Give a total for the amount of flies needed for the swap. Give your instruction for mailing in flies. I usually post my addy after I have all tiers signed up. But if you are uncomfortable posting your addy you can also PM your addy to them. When the swap is full post on the BB it is full so other tiers won't be waisting there time trying to join the swap.

2- Tiers- When you join a swap please adhere to the deadlines. Post what type of fly you will be tying. (I also like to post the recipe for the fly I will be tying.) Please use PM 0r BB with the Swapmeister for communications about the swap.

3- Tiers- either post on the BB when you have mailed in your flies or PM the Swapmeister.

4- Tiers- When mailing your flies, please send them in a strong enough and big enough box to protect them and to hold all of the flies you will be receiving back. Mark the box with your name and address and your on line nickname. Mail them at least 10 days before the end of the swap so they will get to the Swapmiester by the deadline date or earlier.

5- Tiers- include in with your flies a self addressed envelope that is strong enough for the fly box you send and will receive back. Include postage (please do not use metered mail strips on return envelopes) in the proper amount to send the flies back to you. I also add Delivery Confirmaton to mine. I also put my online name on both envelopes. Plus the swap name.

6- Tiers- if you want your flies sent back to you Priority Mail be sure to include enough postage to cover the increased cost over First Class Postage.

7- Tiers- include with your flies a toetag (small piece of paper) with the name of the fly, your name or handle, and your email addy so the other tiers can email you for the fly tying instructions.

8- Swapmeister- when you receive flies from the tiers, let them know on the BB or PM them that you have received them.

9- Swapmeister- once you receive all flies from all tiers sort them, get them all packaged up and deleiver them to the post office in a timely manner. Notify all tiers either on the BB or by PM that you have mailed out the flies to them.

10-Tiers- when you receive the swap flies back in the mail notify the Swapmeister on the BB or by PM that you have received them.

11-Swapmeister when the swap is over and all have received there flies, if you can, post a pic of the swap flies on my site. Then mark your post as Swap Completed.

12-Above all else everyone have a lot of fun with the swap and be open to suggestions and comments, we can all learn from each other.

Let's keep with tradition and limit the swap to twelve people, each to tie a dozen of the same fly. Once we get the twelve, I can put a couple more on "standby" in case somebody drops out. Flies will be due to me March 1, 2011. Once we get our twelve participants, I will post my address for ya'll to ship to. I will send out reminders as the due date nears.

So far I have the following listed as willing participants:

    Guys,

I don't really care what gets tied or what I tie.  The only thing I was thinking, there has been such a variety in the previous swaps, when it comes time to fish them, you really have to decide on species and location and which of the 2 or 3 that will be successful for that trip.  With a theme or targeted species, you could take the whole box and see how they do in your particular location.  As an avid Steelhead fisherman, that's generally what I tie, but they are not in all parts of the country, so my flies don't get fished by all in the swap.  And when I fish for other species, I have to go through the various boxes to pick out certain ones.  By then, no one remembers what they tied, etc.  I'd like to see the fish caught on the exchange flies, so if we target a species or two, trips can be made with just the exchange flies being fished. But like I said, I don't really care.

I was talking with rod tosser last night in the chat room, and he
told me abt this swap. I have tied a coupla flies before, and
would like to join in this swap. So count me in.

Probably tie a crawfish, but not sure.

As an aside, I usually don't fish with the flies I get in swaps.
I just like to keep them, and try to make my own from them.

    Thanks,

My only concerns with themes: 1. Not everybody fishes for the same species, therefore may not be interested in certain patterns (although I do agree that some patterns may appeal to a spectrum of fish), 2. Not everybody has the same tying skill and knowledge. I'd hate to alienate anyone, especially beginners. I myself am a beginner and I relish the challenge of comparing my skills to others. Swaps give us the opportunity to see new patterns and allows us to share ours with others without feeling intimidated. If you want to go fishing with all of yours, that is awesome and we'd all love to see the catch photos. I just prefer to hang on to mine and I actually display them all together by year. Not only am I proud of what I have done, but I am proud of other's creations as well. It is awesome to be included. So let's be careful not to alienate. OR maybe (hint, hint) somebody else can host a themed swap :-) (and if you do, count me in).

    So far:
    1. TallCrane1 Something that looks like something a fish might eat, probably in a sz. 12 or 14.

    7. StoreyTeller
    8. utfisher
    9. harrington Rainbow Smelt
    10. Salty Dan Crawfish (I will be looking forward to a crawfish pattern Dan!)

We need just two more swappers! For those of you that mentioned specific flies, I will post that, but don't feel obligated to decide right now (cause I haven't decided what to tie myself)!

After a quick hook count,I am in with a dozen # 10  Deerhair Crawbugs.Don't let these fool ya, Tied on a 8089 and tail weighted for 5 weight and above, this is a great still water pattern for bass, catfish and the large bluegills. Nail weighted so as to fall level like a crawfish, short strip, short strip then pause.I'll be upgrading these with rubber legs for even better looks and action.

Man, O' man.....you guys have some GREAT conversations going, and I am foaming at the mouth! I may even be feeling a little inadequate since apparently JustDave is the first guy with his homework done (there is always THAT guy)! Not to be outdone, I have been doing a little homework myself and just finished the creating my fly bodies tonight. I decided to try a twist on a suphur fly and go with an extended body, which I had to learn a new technique to create, and quill wings. Here is my first attempt:

    /Users/almosl2/Desktop/164165_1788855522953_1286541265_32035420_2723367_n.jpg

We remain at ten. If ten is all we have, then that is all we have. However, I would still like to push for a dozen. Get the word out!

    So far:
    1. TallCrane1 Something that looks like something a fish might eat, probably in a sz. 12 or 14.

UTfisher, tie whatever you'd like brother! If you want to tie buggers, then that is cool. If not, that is cool too!

Hey guys, I'm a new member of NAFC but I'd love to join in if its not too late. I'm only a beginner so whatever I tie wouldn't be the greatest or most complicated fly but I'm sure I could put something together.

dpeck21, you're on the list, brother! We've got one opening, but a couple of guys tying up second sets...so we are in good shape. I will post my address soon and we'll get this rolling right along.

I think I had talked about setting the due-to-me date of March 1. That still works well for me, if it works for everyone else. I've got my dozen half-tied tonight. The next step (wings) will take some time, patience and nerves as I am new to working with quill wings.

    So far:
    1. TallCrane1, Sz.14 Extended-body Sulphur
    2. Rod Tosser, woolly worm thingy
    3. Just Dave, Green Buggers
    4. midkiff1
    5. Chris G

    7. StoreyTeller

Fore some of you new participants.when you ship them out you can use normal postage, but when you have them shipped back to you I like to use if it fits it ships because you never know what is coming back and i don't want to stiff any one on postage. example my flies are weighted with lead wire ,Daves are weighted with beads this adds up .

Looks like we're gonna see some great flies! I've got most of mine tied, but still need to tie a couple more up.
Okay, with March 1st the due date, I suppose I should give you guys the ship to address:

    Shane "TallCrane1" Schmidt
    859 Nero Court
    Carmel, IN 46032

As soon as I get everybody's entry, I will get photos posted of each entry on the forum to make the non-participants jealous :-) and shipped very soon thereafter. I will send confirmations upon receipt of the flies to each tier so you know that they have arrived safe and sound. PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO INCLUDE A RETURN ADDRESS! If you would like, you can also add a little tag describing name, size, and materials used.

I will probably use card stock and make mailing address labels. but a simple piece of paper works to. just stick the barb through and tape on the back side.

I am going to post the "Send to" address again in case someone missed it. I am going to PM everyone that volunteered to participate to give any slackers a last second reminder. Gentlemen,
I have to share something with you.  In past swaps, I tied a version of egg pattern which has been very succesful for us out here on our winter Steelhead.  Today I manged my personal best Steelhead on one of these tied on a size 8 hook.  He was a beautiful fish between 42"-44" in full war paint.  I didn't have the camera today (of course), but if you've received one in previous swaps and so a liitle Steelhead fishing, give it a shot, it won't disappoint.  I'm not sure why I've gone away from them in favor of the jigs I tie, but I might just have to re-visit these little fish slayers.
Looking forward to seeing the variety in this swap.

No word from Harrington, and rmidkiff1. And we'll give dpeck21 a few days for his flies to arrive! That leaves a total of eight participants. Three of you guys submitted two flies, so unless one of the others suddenly comes through, with eight entries there should be eleven flies coming back to everyone. While we give dpeck21's flies time to get here, I can bust out a dozen of something or another. I will get pictures up ASAP (but be patient. I've had trouble uploading, but have an idea).

The flies all shipped out today, and depending on your home location, you should have them by the weekend! Even though we only had nine participants, due to multiple submissions by several tiers, everyone should have 13 flies in their boxes. Thank all of you for your participation in the 2011 Flyswap! As usual, I am very impressed by everyone's flies and tying abilities - a couple of these had me scratching my head, "how did they do that?" I will suggest that if anyone manages to land a fish with any of these flies, post the photos!

    Looking forward to next year,
