BPS White River Dogwood Canyon rods. Excellent quality for only $59.99.Get a single action reel .Start out with floating line, easiest to learn with. Scientific Anglers makes good inexpensive line. Now instructional DVDs. "Basic Fly Casting with Doug Swisher" from Scientific Anglers. This will get you fly casting quickly and easily without learning bad habits. If you plan on bass and panfish fishing, "Fly Fishing for Bass and Panfish with Skip and Carol Morris" from Fly Fish TV will get you going!  They describe in detail everything you need to know about equipment, fly line, rods, reels, flies, etc. for bass and panfish fishing. Both of these DVDs can be ordered from the BPS online catalog, as well as the rod I suggested. Happy fly fishing!

Taking a class is a great idea, as well as the Pflueger starter's kit. Another thing to add to your arsenal would be the Orvis Fly Fishing guide that you can find on the Orvis web site. Its full of great info and tutorials on starting fly fishing. This book helped me immensely when I started last season.

Pflueger starter was my first combo. I used it for a couple season, and caught plenty of fish with it. Actually till the ferruls wore out. Still have it though, mounted on the wall of my study. I however started on panfish and bass, they seem to be alittle more eager to bite. Trout can be tricky and tempermental. Good possibility of getting skunked and frustrated. Just take your time and don't get upset. Good Luck!!
I want to be the first man ever to fly fish a manatee! I promise I will catch and release.

I do all my fly fishing for bass and panfish. Trout fishing here in Arizona is way up north. Too far for me .  I have a 5/6 weight for panfish, and a 7 weight for bass. I also have a 10 weight that I used to use for salt water fishing. Haven't used it in years though. Perhaps I'll get a new reel and line for it and use it for striper fishing.
