I sometimes pickup flies at local shops and use them as teasers while throwing bucktails, and sometimes get some fish on the flies. Was wonderring what type of gear to use to fish the flies on their own for stripedbass or shad and weakfish.

8 weight rod and line. you would be wise to get a reel that is made for a 9 weight, it is made to hold a certain amount of backing to accompany the 9 weight, which takes up more room on the reel than an 8. when you use that reel with an 8 weight line, you will have more backing behind that line than any other 8 weight reel.one more thing, use 30 pound backing or you could use Tuff line as backing. they advertise that you can do that, I have not tested that claim but its worth a shot.
Happy fishing!

My salt water fly rig is a 10 weight Garcia Conolon rod and Pflueger Medalist #1498 reel that I bought in 1965. It is spooled with 100 yardsof 20 pound backing and WF10F lfly line. This is NOT an easy rig to cast with and is exhausting to cast without breaks. I used this rig for tarpon and bonefish in Florida.

You should be able to pick up a good 8wt set up at any local fly shop. If there are none around I would go with something by redington or orvis to get you underway.
