Last year we did both, any one who wanted to do the theme could or they could do tye whatever they wanted. We want every one to be able to participate . We could do a simple type of theme like streamers or do a specif material or color theme . I am willing to join a theme .

Heck, I haven't done a fly swap for awhile. I'm in. I know what works great around here, hopefully the same patterns are good elsewhere. Dries or wet or choice.

I'm new to the swap idea. How many flies are we talking about? I can see that the minimum would be 11 ,

I borrowed this and edited it slightly, but for all you interested, here are the basic rules:

There are a lot of new swappers poping up now and that is great I have had a lot of questions sent to me about being in and hosting swaps, so I figured I would post this again. I am not an expert and not the rule of thumb here.

The most important thing I consider in being in a swap is have fun, be patient and communicate, ask for help when you need it.

Here are some helpful things to consider when joining or hosting a swap. John

These are suggestions, that will help Swapmeisters (host) and tiers to have a pleasureable swap and a good time.

It is important that Swapmeisters and Tiers communicate with each other thru PM or on the BB. Swapmeisters it is a good idea to check your post at least once a day, to see if you have any more swappers that have signed up, or in case any of your swappers have questions.

1- Swapmeister- When you post your swap, give a signup deadline, and a deadline for the flies to be in. Give instructions on what type of flies to tie. Give a total on the number of tiers for the swap. Give a total for the amount of flies needed for the swap. Give your instruction for mailing in flies. I usually post my addy after I have all tiers signed up. But if you are uncomfortable posting your addy you can also PM your addy to them. When the swap is full post on the BB it is full so other tiers won't be waisting there time trying to join the swap.

2- Tiers- When you join a swap please adhere to the deadlines. Post what type of fly you will be tying. (I also like to post the recipe for the fly I will be tying.) Please use PM 0r BB with the Swapmeister for communications about the swap.

3- Tiers- either post on the BB when you have mailed in your flies or PM the Swapmeister.

4- Tiers- When mailing your flies, please send them in a strong enough and big enough box to protect them and to hold all of the flies you will be receiving back. Mark the box with your name and address and your on line nickname. Mail them at least 10 days before the end of the swap so they will get to the Swapmiester by the deadline date or earlier.

5- Tiers- include in with your flies a self addressed envelope that is strong enough for the fly box you send and will receive back. Include postage (please do not use metered mail strips on return envelopes) in the proper amount to send the flies back to you. I also add Delivery Confirmaton to mine. I also put my online name on both envelopes. Plus the swap name.

6- Tiers- if you want your flies sent back to you Priority Mail be sure to include enough postage to cover the increased cost over First Class Postage.

7- Tiers- include with your flies a toetag (small piece of paper) with the name of the fly, your name or handle, and your email addy so the other tiers can email you for the fly tying instructions.

8- Swapmeister- when you receive flies from the tiers, let them know on the BB or PM them that you have received them.

9- Swapmeister- once you receive all flies from all tiers sort them, get them all packaged up and deleiver them to the post office in a timely manner. Notify all tiers either on the BB or by PM that you have mailed out the flies to them.

10-Tiers- when you receive the swap flies back in the mail notify the Swapmeister on the BB or by PM that you have received them.

11-Swapmeister when the swap is over and all have received there flies, if you can, post a pic of the swap flies on my site. Then mark your post as Swap Completed.

12-Above all else everyone have a lot of fun with the swap and be open to suggestions and comments, we can all learn from each other.

    Thanks mo65,
Keep watching for the updates,an yes we always post the pics for all members! You can view some of the earlier swaps as well.
If you ever even thought you might like to try fly tying, this group of tyer's is one of the best, we're happy to help with the basic of questions. With a small set of tying tools and materials, you'll find a rewarding effort, you get what you put into it.
But I gotta warn you, try it and you just might find yourself....... HOOKED!

I am going to tie a size 6 or8 olive slump buster streamer. I used it on the Norfork river in Arkansas yesterday and caught rainbows, cutthroats, and a nice brown. I bet I caught over 30 fish on it yesterday. I have used them for smallmouth as well. One of my favorite small streamers.

I don't know if this is within the rules of a swap, but, if nobody steps up and fills the other two slots. I am willing to double dip and send in a second set. I am willing to tie a dozen Woolybuggers # 8-10, if that will help. I don't want to be greedy or take away the chance from someone, but I don't want the swap to fail.
Let me know if this is OK. I will wait until the close date to put my name in a second time. hdsmokey@comcast.net ..........

There are no hard set rules as to the swap but in all fairness, I think we all would be happy for your additional "slot" if need be although I have full faith in the Fly tyers of NAFC to step up and fill the last 2 slots, This is our 3rd annual fly swap ,Let's make it our best showing.
I figure thier just waitting to set the hook!An with that being said, WHO'S IN ON THE LAST 2 SLOTS?

Like I said, it was more to spur some of the other members to step up. But, I don't mind tying a few more flys, it gives me the practice and being a newby I can use all of the practice that I can get. One of the reasons that I was so happy to give the swap a try is that I will be able to see what others, who know what the flys are supposed to do and look like, think of my tying ability. All of the other members of my family who fish are spin caster types.

Well, I cheated and actually used the HTML editor to add the picture as a link from another site. But if you look beneath the Submit, Cancel, and Preview buttons when you are posting you will see a bar that says "Attachments", click the little arrow and then use the "choose file" to find the fie you want to upload and click upload button. Once that's all done you will have a little display below that lets you insert your picture.

Now if all that worked, there should be a little picture right here:

Thanks. I had been using the quick reply to send posts and there was no attachment button there. Now that I have used the reply button IN he post I can see it down there.

Here Is a photo of one of the "Prince Nymphs" that I have tied for the Fly Swap. It may not be the best that you would see from some of the better tiers, but then
again, I have only been tying for a few months. How do you think I an doing?

That Mouse (my Wife) and I hit the Sportsman's show in Leesport Pa. Saturday. Man, was that place packed. Did anyone on this list manage to go? It was the first show of the season in this area. As a rule we have quite a few shows of this type every year, the next one being in Balley Pa. the last Sunday of Feb.. I did rather well on picking up some fly tying materials at good prices. I even got some long neck hackles and the guy gave me a break on the price because he knew that I was going to use them for flies, $20 bucks. I tried to tell him that these things are going for $BIG BUCKS$, but he would not hear it. If anyone lives in the South Eastern part of Pa. and would like me to post the times and places of upcoming shows, let me know.

For the toe tag for your fly please include forum name and real name. I use home made address labels on card stock but you can use a slip of paper just stick the hook through it and use a piece of tape on the back side to keep it on .

To start off, PLEASE resend me the shipping address.  My inbox got cleaned out and there it went.  I have to leave this weekend for three weeks (heading to Key West, again), so I knew I had to get these flies done.  And I did.  These are some of my "go-to" flies for around here.  These are all size 16 Parachute Adams, even though I made a few size 26 PA last night for our own use.  Hey, I was on a roll.  Anyways, here's a pic and the recipe.

    Photobucket

Hook:  Size 16 (not sure of exact brand)
    Thread:  Blue Dun 70
    Wing:  Antron, white
Tail:  Spoonie wing fibers (eh, we're duck hunters)
    Abdomen:  Adams gray beaver dubbing
    Hackle:  Grizzly Hackle

Now, to sit down and tie a few more salt water flies for Key West flats.

Three weeks in Key West, that's it, just rub it in. That is a good looking tie and I will give it a try and add it to my list. This list is such a great thing for me, it gives me the knowledge and incentive to push me to improve my tying skills. I thank all of the members for all of the help.

I go to Key West often, but I've yet to meet up with a fellow NAFC member that I could fish with. Oh, well. Apparently there isn't any members in Key West, just tourists. My goal, again, is to hook up on a tarpon with a fly that I've tied. Actually, hooking up with a tarpon on ANY fly would be cool in my book. About 90% of the flies I'm taking with me I tied myself. Saltwater fish like simple, easy to tie, flies. They seem to like the white and red bunny flies I tie, at least the last time I was there.

Glad they got there and you like them.  I'm here in Key West now, chasing everything with flies on some evenings after work and having a riot.  Nothing big, yet, but that could change tomorrow.  It's our first day off since we got here.  In the evenings after fishing, I'm finding the time to tie some other flies as I brought a small travel tying kit with me.  I do look forward to see the results from this swap when the flies come in.

    Update. SRI. Crawfish #8 hook

    Salty Dan

    Hello fly swappers;

On my toe tag, I have the fly as a variant of Al Caldwell's crawfish. It is not.

It is a variant of the late Al Campbell's crawfish.

Sorry about that. Didn't notice until after I had sent them off.

    TC1,
You're special and like the extra face time?

Things are pretty sketchy, sometimes the attachment feature works, sometimes not, sometimes i will double post, sometimes not.  I've had it time out, I go back and re-post and it will come out double.

    JustDave

We really don't mind if it's important.

OL JW ,TALLCRANE AND ME usually kick the idea around. SO far it has been a once a year off season thing but the more tiers we know the easier it is to get one going . OL JW and tallcrane have been the hosts and I try to get folks to join. The three of us do are best to make sure the swap is a success . IF we don't get 12 folks we usually pick up the open spots to make sure the swap works. Always glad to have more folks to add to the list.

With the growing number of members on the list, maybe the swap could be expanded to two a year. I know that I liked the process so much that I would be more than happy to do it again. It appears like a real good way for many of us that are new to the sport to learn and get opinions from the other members. I saw my ability to tie the prince nymph over the tying time of 14 or 15 flies. Put my name in for the next swap whenever it comes up.

Thanks again for all of the fun and knowledge gained with this swap. Smokey.............

Yes, thanks for the hosting this swap. Looking forward to trying out flies from around the country in my neck of the woods. I'm in another fly swap, sort of, with a fly fishing club in Southern CA. One of our members is giving away a new fly box with 408 hand tied flies. The catch? The box has 24 rows and 17 slots per row. So...we have 24 tiers, each tying 17 flies of one pattern. Once all the flies are in, there is a drawing and one luck tier receives the box and ALL the flies. Each fly is kept to about size 14 and smaller in order to fit in the box. That swap will be done in another month. I'm hoping, hoping, hoping. Anyways, just thought I'd mention it.

My flies came in yesterday's post. Those were great and gave me an idea of where I stand as a new tier of bugs. It looks like I am well on my way, but have a loooooong way to go. I don't know if I will ever be able to do some of those real small sizes. This swap was so much fun that I am already planning what to tie for the next swap. Thanks so very much to all who were involved. Come on please please please another soon...................

Got my flies in yesterday.  Now just waiting for the opportunity to try them out.  I like the variety as I fly fish for more than trout.  Even my wife was admiring the handiwork and talked about where the flies would best be tried out at.  I will certainly post pics of fish we catch on them.
