The first few took me an hour or more, each!  The last two took about 1/2 hour each.  I must be careful not to be in a big hurry, or rushed...That's when I make mistakes!

fun stuff! I am a beginner as well.  What feathers do you like so far?
Large bluegill never leave me, from day to night to sleep. My ultralight gear puts up quite a fight. So when I catch a big 'gill, I think a fish of might. And put him in my hand to view the sight.

    Here is another color group...

I don't have a specific feather type that I like.  It's more like what will work the best!

Looks great Pete!!!!!   They get a little faster to make after you've tied a couple of hundred of them.  lololol  Tying trebles really honed my wrapping and knotting skills when I first started tying.  Keep up the good work!

Thanks Kelley!  I am learning.  So far I have tied about 30 trebles.  Here is another color group...

The pic isn't so good, but the hackle color is olive green.

Thanks for the complements!  I only started tying trebles this winter.  I am working my way to tying flies...I have a long way to go!

I don't know what this pattern is called, so I'll call it: catch fish!  I hope in a week or two to tye a "custom" set of five hooks, each a different size.  I'll post pics when I am done...

    Dan,

when you are starting out, take pics at each step of building your treble, then post here.  That way it is easier for those that like to "teach" to do so, they see your actual steps.  Believe me, it helps!  Good luck and I look forwad to see your progress!

I have started tying the 5 treble set.  I am using a single red hackle, white bucktail and crystal flash.

Chris, when I am finished with this set, I'll start on some for us to trade.  Do you want them like the red hackle one I tied in previous pic (that is a double hackle)?  Anyway, I am having fun!

I just tied this one tonight.  The marabou is supposed to be red but it looks more pink to me...There is flash a bou strips also.  I am going to start the red hackle with bucktail.  You need to let me know how many you want.

I learned from several members of this club.  If you notice the very first posts, they are step by step.  As I completed each step I would take a pic and post it on what used to be john's site, before it crashed.  Then Trev and a couple of others would give me advise on how to proceed.  It has been a great way to learn.  I will use the same technique when I start to tie dry flies...Right now my biggest problem is coming up with different color combos!

nice trebles Turnip.  you mike like to try a rotating vise its speed up your tying, and you can veiw all side without taking the hook out of the vice.... like mine a lot, using a renzetti with a pedestal....you can get a nice rotary vice from  jannsnetcraft.com     E- roatating vice for $32.95   or try to buy a use vice... going to tie some trebles with glow flashabou in the next day of two. i like krystal flash, deer hair, fish hair.and flashabou,to make my trebles. o using rubber skirts too  <center>

Those are some really nice lookin trebles, that hard work is sure to pay off. After you have fished them please let us know what color combo works the best. I think the black and white with the red in it would work anywhere. THANKS for sharing

hi guys. i was just wondering if you could make a basic list of the items i would need to start tying trebles. im on a tight budget so it would also be nice if u could tell me a price(doesnt have to be exact anything will help.) i just really want to start doing this and try it out but dont know exactly what i need. so far it looks like feathers and such, thread, bobbin, vice. what else would i need?

    Thanks alot,

    Dan

Your vice is gonna be the most improtant piece of equipment.  It should a type that swivels the hook...How do I say this...Spins it around, making it easier to work on.  Fine and course cut scisors (sp).  Bobbin, exacto knife, wip finisher, 3/0 thread (black or red prefered), hackle (color of your choice), marabou (color of your choice), deer hair (color of your choice) and clear fingernail polish (this I use for glue & I buy it at the dollar store).  Ya might consider a stacker, making it easier to make the deer hair the same length.  And there is a ton of other tying materials you can use...Someone please add what I might have overlooked!

    Hey Pete,

Can you try some black  with maybe silver flash  or white flash  on bleeding red hooks and  red with silver or gold flash ,  also on the Chart. hooks  black with chart. flash. Just the frilly stuff no feathers

I'll pay ya for em when ya done

I have received some feedback from the field.  What I have been tying does not work so well for top water.  This my first attempt at top water:

This is a size 6 hook with red marabou, a small amount of white bucktail and a little krystal flash.  I think this type of feather will work better than hackle.  This should also allow the lure to work as it should...I am sending this one out in the field for testing.

Yes  that looks like the ticket right there , now if you could do up some in the aforementioned color combos on bleeding red hooks for the likes of slash baits , and top water poppers , zara spook type lures . I would be glad to field test / purchase them from you.

I am making a new type of lure , I call it the new voe frog , it is a jointed model and I would like to try your  hooks on it. I am currently putting  the bleeding red and the Chart. trebles on it, the dressing  needs to be somewhat thin and light weight, and no feathers. As mentioned in a previous post , black /with a light flash of silver or white, and  Chart. with a flash of white or gold or all three, and white with a flas of redand silver.  I am testing three of these lure , one in black  with white markings , one in Chart. with white markings, and one white  with red markings

I could even send you a couple of the lures as trade, you could have some fun with dressing them up. And if you don't take them swimming , they would look good hanging on the wall.

    Let me know.

Ok Tom, I'll take the challenge!  First off, what hook size should I use?  I can get the red hooks but I haven't seen chartrouse (sp) hooks.  Where will I find them?

Secondly, the colors you have chosen and the materials you would like me to use (no feathers)...Do you want me to use krystal flash to make the colors, like the white one posted above (several pics above)?  The frilly stuff you speak of is marabou, feathers...

Third, I am in the middle of tying some trebles for the Finger Lakes Meet and one for a birthday present.  If I have time before I leave I will try to start yours (you are next on the list).  I leave on the 6th and won't return until the 14th.  I will be home until the 26th which is when I leave for the Raystown Meet.  I will return on the 28th.  After that I am wide open!

    Hey Pete,

Take your time no rush , it can wait till you get back. I have to get the new batch of lures made up. BTW you will be the only one on the planet besides me to have a set of these lures. Have you got any colors in mind that you want. Keep in mind that all my stuff is hand painted, so I don't /can't do any of the holographic stuff. I will send you the Chart. hooks . I'm not sure of the size I want yet, I will get back to on that.  Enjoy the meet, wish I was going .

    Hey Pete ,

I meant for you to use the same stuuf as used in the red/white top water example you posted the picture of.  And to clear it up here is the color combos once again.

red hook-- black as main color/ white/ and silver or gold, the silver or gold needs to be just a light presence, just enough to to add flash.

red hook-- white as main color with red/ and silver

Chart. hooks--chart. as main color with white / silver or gold as flash.

If you can match the wrap thread to the main color , if not then just use black.

Give me a holler when you get back.

Yes sir that is it , maybe just a touch more maribu, but that is the look  I want, also the same thing on the other color combos and chart hooks.    And I will be sending more Chart. hooks for you to use on me and you , I found a new source for them.

Okay  on 3 sets of  #4 and #6  red hooks  black maribu body, just a hint of red and silver flash.

And then  3 sets of  #4 and #6  Chart. hooks  Chart. maribu, with just a hint of  red and gold flash ( or silver  which ever you have

And on 3 sets of # 4 and #6  red hooks  White maribu with just a hint of red and silver flash

On your lures when I make them, do you want me to hang hooks on them , or do you want to experimant with your own combos based on the colors I paint them?

If you would like to do up a set of fire tiger ones that would be great also , either way I quess send them to me . I have yet to get started on the lures as I have been down for almost three weeks with some kind of flu bug . They won't take me long to make once I get started though.  Also If you want me to afix some of these to the lures I'll make for you then do up the colors you like and I will try to match the paint to them .

They look really good Pete  thanks.

    thems lookd saxy Petey.

now all we have to do is get yah started adding a wire shaft  weight and a blade .

you can use sinkers for weights bullet or egg sinkers work

now that you have transfer d to  single hooks  don't be shy to Tye up  some hair jigs .
smash  down the lead  > barb and lay a base of thread and  do the same thing .

you can also use a rabbit zonker strip .  then add marabou or hair  just tye  the strip in  so it rides

hair up  in other words insert hook in  vice  and tye to the bottom of the hook shank  so the  hair is facing the shank and  will ride hair up when it is fished.  you want to strip a bit of hair of the strip  so you can tye it in  .

Here's my first dressed treble. It's a #8 Gamakatsu red color

there is something I like about red hooks I just don't know what!

This is what I origanally wanted a fly tying kit for Now I need to get some different colored material so I can add  dressed trebles to the lure bodies that I made last year.

Very nice, Bob! You can "match the hatch" so to speak or go for a contrast, either way works! Nice job! It's good to see your having fun with what you are creating and that is most important. A word of caution, I have made some that were just a little heavy or large for the bait and it would lose some of the action...But I see here you are well on your way!

Yeah, thats why the ones I tied for the Spro lures are dressed lightly for the finished design. I did start with a little longer feathers. If I remember right it was similar in size to the one I tied for the larger billed Owner lure in firetiger pattern. I usually only do about 6 feathers. It makes tying easy. So I've trimmed the ones on the Spro lures down.

Sometimes a slight less lure wobble works better for colder water fish. I think overall I prefer to dress up lures with big diving bills.

I am finding that I like marabou better than hackle. The marabou gives all kinds of action even when the lure is at rest!

At this years Finger Lakes Meet, ole Shadetree handed me some bare (no hooks) buzzbaits and asked if I would add trebbles and dress them.  Well, I said sure thing!  This is what I cam up with...

I would love to learn how to do this. I have never made a lure but have always been fascinated with those that do. I need to find some books on this subject and get the tools and start playing with it. It has to be more rewarding to catch fish on a lure you built rather than bought. Great job on those too

kclance , there are several "how to" threads on this BB. Look in the "Fly Fishing" Forum, the begining of this thread and I think there are some in the "Member Tips" Forum...You could also do like I did for this topic. Best of luck!

A couple of weeks ago, when I was at the Finger Lakes Meet, Susan (Ishould be fishin) gave me four baggies of feathers from her chickens.  I gotta tell ya these are show birds (IMHO).  So today I decided to make her something that she and her daughter might remember me by...

The yellow marabou I added but the dark tail feather(s) are from her birds.  I also made the inline spinner(s) that they are hooked to.  They are a light weight spinner.  Enjoy, Susan & Celeste!

They are awesome Pete! Thank you so much!!!
I used to get to fish a whole lot more than as of late. But I still love it and long to become the hopeless addict that I once was able to be.
