We need your help in answering the following question: What favorite old lure do you wish they had never stopped manufacturing? In other words, what lure did you used to buy and use with success, that now you can't find anywhere?

Please list the exact name and model of the lure, as well as your preferred color. Describe it a little for me. We're looking for your input for an upcoming magazine feature.

    Thanks,

    Tony

For me the answer is easy, the Rebel spoonbill minnow.  You can find them on eBay, or if your lucky an estate auction.  All colors & sizes!  The most productive color for me was (is) black back with silver sides.  I have a ton of them!

I'm pretty fond of the deep diving midget River Runts. Seems like I'm the only one that uses them anymore. I still find that they work really good on walleyes when trolled. Red & white and perch seem to do the best for me. Ebay is about the only place to find a good selection and most sellers there get pretty good prices for them.

Is it possible that the word "Classic" you are using should be "Original" instead?

You're welcome! I WANT to say that when Culprit 1st brought the originals back out on the market a few years ago that they tried calling them "Classic".

The ONE thing that I DO remember is paging through a BPS catalog...and seeing that the originals were back out. My recollection of that was jarred after I saw your post and did a search for "Culprit Classic"....which didn't turn up much to speak of. Then I checked for Culprit on BPS....then checked the Culprit website...and kind of put 2 and 2  together

I think Creme even has their original worm back out.

My favorite discontinued lure is the Salmo Hornet SDR Floating. About the time I started catchin walleye on this lure Salmo pulled the plug on this lure.

The back story is that the Salmo rep that told me this neglected to mention that he had pretty well cornered the market on this lure! Salmo suggested contacting him and he denied having any of these lures, and flat out told me they didn't work very well! So much for integrity.

There are a few of the old baits that I wish I could still get.

    The Rebel Suspend-R.

The Slither worm by Mr Twister 4 and 6 inch, there was a later version called a Mr Means. These were 3 and 5 inch I beleave. These baits were hot for Smallmouth and Walleye.

Hi All--Just a little information I picked up at the tackle store yesterday! I don't know how true it is as i haven't seen it in black and white. But the source is very knowledgeable and trustworthy> The other day we were discussing "phoebe" lures by Acme. I was told that Acme has filed for Chapt.11 bankruptcy. That means Kastmasters, crockadiles and all the rest may be no more!! Unless someone buys them out and continues the line> Hope it's not true cause they are great lures!-------- Bill J.

The Rapala countdown in the flourescent orange was an excellent lure for rainbow trout, sea run cutthroat, and steelhead. It was discontinued when I first found them, but they are excellent, and Rapala makes simalar lures.

Rapala Shad Rap #7 in the original chartreuse pattern. It was chartreuse on top and faded to an off white on the bottom with no red or other colors. Both deep and shallow divers. Rapala discontinued this pattern, then brought it back but with some red on it. The original worked much better. I have caught many walleye, bass, northern pike, perch and even a few muskies on that lure.

Rapala doesn't seem to make there things like they used to.

I have a couple of Rapalas that are about 4 years old and they are different than the ones made today. The bills aren't very durable on today's models. And as stated, many good colors are altered.

I am saddened to hear that Rappala has fallen into the trap and started cheapening up on their lures. I haven't purchased any Rappala lures in a while, I really stocked up a few years ago and haven't bought any since. I'm thinking I got lucky. Tom

I'm about 99% the lure is discontinued....you can see what year that catalog page is from on the site there.

I thought I knew quite a bit about various "banana" type baits...but this added to my knowledge

I have a couple of Smoo's in my collection...and have seen them on Ebay too

I KNOW what you mean about trying to figure out what an older lures was / is.

I'll do a post in a couple of days that should help you folks out on here

Good luck krissy. When you find out let me know, I'll by a punch myself. Cabela's has the gold color but I can't find clown. Not even at the Rapala site. So I guess they don't make it anymore. If you want some good used ones contact Davesett2000. I've purchased lures from him in the past and will vouch for him. He will get them right out to you at a very reasonable price. By the way welcome to the club and the BB. What part of the country are you from?

Beno, orange with black spots. Last one I've seen is hanging on my den wall and hasn't seen water in 20 years. Rapala countdown #5 ? in crawfish pattern. Was told it was a discontinued color due to slow sales. Try Fin-N-Fur in Ashland Ohio for the Berkley Frenzy cranks, they always have a bunch during show season. I'll try to get a website or mailing address up shortly.

To find Rapala's in a store at 50% off these days is tough. You'd have to catch one of the "big box" stores (WalMart etc...) clearing out inventory....or a tackleshop going out of business....or watch Ebay like a HAWK.

I was lucky to catch 3 K-Marts closing out in California back in the late '90's.

I have a few Rapala's for sale...but at the moment.....not a single jointed one....as Frank, Pete and others wiped me out

This website here has several Frenzy's and Rapala's for sale....both new and used. I purchased some things from him a few months ago.

    http://flatware-replacements.com/fishinglures.html

The Rapala Countdown in crawfish color is a tough one to find...Ebay is probably the only way to find one. I see Beno's on Ebay in lure lots and tackle boxes of lures for sale....and is how I added these 3 to my collection of "banana-type" lures.

My favotoldlure was/is the# #3 Lazy Ike in the green frog pattern.I know they sill make ikes but not the frog.T good news isthat I have been able to get a few of them off of E-bay.I also miss the Jensen frog legs lure , it was a top water much like a hula popper , but with mechanical legs that kicked when you pulled the line. They caught bass like crazy.

I guess I'll heap more regret onto the Rapala pile.  I have always been an advocate of Rapala lures and I probably carry around 100 of them in my boat at any given time.  However, some of their decisions dumbfound me.  For example, they discontinued the Risto Rap.  I know they came out with the DT series but the Risto Rap is sizes 7 & 9 were always top notch producers for me.  Colors in Silver Blue, TN Shad, and Plum Shad were my favorites.  In fact, the original SB color "genuine silver plated" was always my go to lure.  I have jointed models, original floaters, countdowns, shad raps, shallow shad raps, rattlin' rapalas, and Risto's in the old SB color.  Spring, Summer, Fall, the SB color was always my choice and always a winner.  Why on earth they did away with this color is beyond me - it was not for lack of sales.  Every person I know who fishes with hard baits has at least one of these in their box.  Another Rapala that is long gone now are the Inox Series of Magnums, Super Shads, and Skitter Pops.  These lures are awesome for durability.  I do a lot of fishing for pike and musky and most wood lures get torn up after a few fish, but the Inox Super Shads and Magnums in my box show hardly any wear after 10 or 12 seasons and too many fish to count.  I have some friends who fish for Stripers and Blues that won't fish with anything else because the Bluefish will murder lesser wooden baits.  Maybe that's the ticket - the Inox baits were just too well built so people didn't buy as many or as often.  What a shame.

Another bait that is almost impossible to find is the Turus Ukko 7" Jerkbait.  I always had top confidence in a color called Black Plague, it was all black with red dots and little white halos around the red dots.  These things are just total pike and musky slayers.  I don't know what happened to the company.  One day they seemed to be doing well and then they vanished.  They were all hand made, tank tested and tuned in Finland like the old school Rapala's.  I still have a few of these baits but they are on their last legs.

It wouldn't surprise me if Rapala just got tired of trying to get the steel for the Inox lures at a reasonable price....and Asian steel is still rife with quality problems.

At the moment there are 112 auctions of nothing but Risto Raps on Ebay....many starting at $0.99 with no bids on them....here's one of 2 RR9's in SB & SG for about $12 including shipping...

Ebay Auction for 2 Risto Raps

    There's another guy on Ebay with a store that has Ukko's...but $20 - $25

    Ebay Ukko's

I also see these ocassionally in larger lots of muskie lures.....but almost none in single auctions.

I see ton's of Lazy Ikes on Ebay....with very little interest in them...so it's easy to get a bunch of them at a reasonable price.

I still find Skitter Pops at Cbela's and BPS. That being said, the selection is limited. A couple of years ago I remember reading an article or a posting here, declairing that the Skitter Pop is no more... Like you, I have many Rapala's that I carry with me. Infact, my first purchases were the Skitter Pop & Prop, both in all the color options. The first time I laid eyes on the Risto Rap I knew I needed a few of them rascals! They have been a regular addition to my box ever since!

A buddy of mine was looking for a topwater lure called a chug-n-spit,The only one I could find is a Mann's saltwater lure that is 7" long,he told me that the ones he had where only about 3" or so.Do you know if they use to make a freshwater variety? I checked there site and found nothing. It looks just like a Rebel Pop-R but it has a hole through the mouth that went up through the top of the head.It would spout water up through it when you would twitch your rod tip.

Hi David - you know that guy with the $22 Ukko's on eBay? He only has crankbaits left now. Reason being, I bought all his jerkbaits! He even had one Black Plague color so I appreciate the heads up. The price may seem steep but given the number of 42-48 inch muskies I have fooled with them, I gladly paid the entry fee. As for the Risto Raps, I probably have 2 new in the box - in every color and size - from the early 2000's when they put them on clearance for $1.99 each. I have Risto Raps like sharks have teeth, if one is lost another will just pop out and replace it. I just don't get why successful products cease being made. I have some of the newer DT series, but the Risto trumps them in one area hands down and that is trolling. I have trolled them side by side and the Ristos track better and their thicker lips crash off rocks and stumps with hardly a scratch. Ristos almost never need tuned no matter how bad you abuse them. I have twice broken the lips in half on DT-16 baits so I stopped trolling with them. Ebay is a great site. I can usually find just about anything, and I have saved searches to notify me of new listings for certain lures. The other thing I like about ebay is when buying from fellow fisherman, I tend to have a good buying experience. I don't use it for much else to be honest!

This is not a particularly old lure but one I can no longer find. Back in the late 80s I used to fish on trout streams with a spinner that I really thought was productive on big browns. It was a blue fox wisper. This was similar to the vibrax at least the barrel part on the shaft. the one difference was that it had a willowleaf blade instead of the oval one on the vibrax. my favorite was in gold or nickel in a #5. It put out a ton of flash but the vibration was less that a vibrax of same size. cast upstream into a nice looking hole and worked back just fast enough to keep the blade turning good was a killer. I have looked on ebay and at the blue fox website and emailed them but have not received a response. Some of their offerings in their european catalog's look similar. If anybody knows what I am talking about or have used these in the past I would like to know.

Thanks David.  Thats the one! I forgot about the texture on the blade. since they are no longer being produced I need to search and test similar lures to see If there is something I like. Of course I may just run into a new favorite.

    Thanks

Thanks Dave,I did find them in there 2005 catalog just today but not on there website. I made him a few wooden lures that are similiar But with the hole up through the head makes the nose weak and I'm affraid that if it hits any rocks on the cast it might break.I'll be searching for any for sale in case he wants to buy any.

    You're welcome Brian & Sam

@ Brian....the blade on there is what EYE call a "rounded willow"....you will find the similar SHAPE of blade on Worden's Rooster Tails...Luhr Jensen Shyster...and the Renosky Swiss Swings. I've never seen "diamond-type" blades that Blue Fox used on those Whisper's ANYWHERE else...not even as knock-offs at Jann's or Stamina

@Sam....I don't know how big the hole was that you had drilled through the lures...nor the placement of the hole....but I would have been inclined to drip a little clear fingernail polish OR some Super-Glue down into there

Repala rattlin fat raps - I still have a blue gill and cat fish looking ones but only use them rarely since I fear loosing them.  I have had great luck on both of them.

Also the Repala steel silver spoon they made in the mid to late 90's (sorry don't recall the official name).  I lost this lure a year ago and miss it greatly - I had caught a 21" Bass on it and it was just a great lure for going through the weeds.

A little steep but the spoon may be worth it for me.  That thing was super weedless and heavy enough to get it way out.

My favorite forTrout on rivers in Oregon, has always been the Doc Shelton! I grew up using this on the Trask, Nestucca, and Siletz and is "the one to use!" I can't find them ANYWHWERE!!! You can lose count of all the fish you catch on these! Last year I even hooked into 2 fresh from the ocean Steelhead! Quite the thrill! I like the biggest one they make, half silver, half gold, not sure of the blade size, but it's got a distinct shape that makes them what they are. Basically a trolling lure with a small leader and a piece of bait(worm or egg) trailing behind! IF ANYONE KNOWS WHERE TO GET THESE, PLEASE, PLEASE, LET ME KNOW!!!!!

Speaking in defense of Rapala.  Most of us have caught plenty of bass on the floating versions and for a lot of us old timers it was the first lure we caught our first big bass on other than a black plastic worm.  I had gotten away from that model for no known reason to myself.  I think they are made just as good as ever.  I've been in the habit for a long time of adding a little red or orange here and there--even added weight to the rear to make it sit upright in the water.  My hat is off to them!
This Spring I tried the X-Rap in several sizes but the XRAP 10 has become one of my favorites.  I have caught fish on each color but my favorite has been the blue.  I've caught three over ten pounds and my young teen friend caught his first ten pounder and is hooked for life.  I can't describe the look on his face and the sound in his voice when she exploded out of the water on her first try to throw the lure.  But the greatest joy was in my heart when he eased her gently back in to catch another day.  I'm not sure but I think Rapala is doing a great job to meet our needs.  It is hard to stay on top but they are mighty close for me.  Wish you great fishing and pass the spark on to another!  Uncle Tom
I built my own lure company as a young man--thus the name UncleTomsJigs. It grew so well I decided to give it up and go fishing with family, friends and especially grand children. I became disabled as a United Methodist Pastor IN 2002 and retired here in Coastal Georgia on a 10 acre lake where I continue to fish despite my disabilities. My wonderful wife and I enjoy fishing together. God has blessed us in so many ways and we pray the same for you. I am excited about having so many new friends all over this great country.

My favorite no longer made lures were Injun Joe's Frog and Polish Polliwog By Injun Joe Bait Co. of West Hazleton, PA. OK, Joe never made it national with these baits but they really caught Largemouth in PA. The first time I threw a Polish Polliwog was at Lily Lake. I tossed it into the weeds at an incoming tributary and triggered the big ker-sploosh of a musky. I set the hook hard and fell flat on my back side. That musky cut the line so fast I never even felt the pop of the line. On my way home, I stopped at the bait shop and bought 5 more. Unfortunately Joe passed in the 1980's and those lures are gone for good.

I tried Googling too but found nothing. I went to high school with Joe's daughter and ran into her at a reunion about 10 years ago. She told me that after he retired, he worked hard to get his business off the ground but it never developed more than a local following. He tried unsuccessfully to sell his ideas to some of the big boys but nothing materialized. But it was funny that there was a very similar frog put on the market by one of those big boys a year or two after Joe died.

    Such is life,

I was on a fishing trip in Canada when I tried out a Risto Rap I had. I don't remember when or where I bought it but I pulled it out of my tackle to go deep cause my cousin was catching fish deep with a lip less crank bait. I caught a few fish with it and was happy. Sometime after I read the RR had been discontinued. While talking with my cousin over the phone I mentioned the news about the RRs. He told me he had six of them and since he remembered I had done well with them he told me he'd give me all six of them. On my next visit to his place he gave me 3 NIB Risto Raps. I figured he may have decided to keep 3 for himself so I let it go at that. What the heck, 3 RRs for free, can't beat that. The bad thing is now I can't find the original RR I used and caught fish with. I don't know if I lost it or if it buried in one of my unused tackle boxes. They are buried in my little work shop and have not managed to get motivated to dig them out to look for my missing RR. All three RRs my cousin gave me have the Normark label on it without the tab to hang them up and the bills have "Ireland" stamped on them.

I forgot to mention that the RR rap I am missing had red, gold and silver and I think the belly was white. The 3 RRs my cousin gave me did not have size number or colors on the box. One is Green with black top with white belly. The second one has a light brown top with tannish/yellow, red gill plate and white belly. The last RR looks like it has shad coloring, black top, grayish/black scales, red gill plate and white belly. All three are Deep Runners.

Now that I think about it I remembered a lure I have only seen once and nowhere else. I just arrived at my new duty station in Spain and was shopping around the Base Exchange when I saw a Johnson tear drop shaped lure with a rectangular red strip going up the middle half way up the lure. It was the first and only one I have ever seen. I put the lure in my foot locker and sat there for over 2 years. I was on my way out the door for a fishing trip with my buddies when I remembered that Johnson spoon and dug it out and put it in my shirt pocket. We were fishing from the bank when my buddy came to me and told me he had lost the lure I had loaned him and could I loan him another one? I gave him the Johnson and wished him luck. A while lated he was calling for me to help him. I get to where he was fishing and saw he had a large pike on the spoon. He had the drag set too loosely and could not wind in his prize. I watched him pull the fish in hand over hand until he had it on shore. Next he was reaching his hand into the pike's mouth when I shouted for him to stop. I used his pocket knife and my bolo knife and my foot on the fishes neck to keep it still while I worked the treble hook out of the pike's mouth. It was as long as my arm and weighed 11 pounds! Shortly after that lure was lost to a tree or a rock.

Rebel Small Shallow-R crankbait.  It was a smaller version of the Rebel Wee-R.  I believe it was 3/8 ounce, with a rounded bill.  It ran about 4 feet deep and was just perfect for the areas of the Susquehanna and Juniata rivers that I fished.  My favorite colors were charteuse with brown back and orange belly, light brown with a darker brown back and orange belly, natural crawfish, and natural perch.

I have just logged on for the first time having discovered this forum while unsuccessfully trying to locate ANY 3/8 oz Harrison Vibra Bat lure.  I would prefer a yellow one, but I could always repaint one of another color.  My late grandfather gave me one years ago and I lost it to a fast water snag as a kid.  I caught my largest northern pike ever (10 1/2 pounds) in the Yellow river behind our house in Wisconsin and would like to get another.  I loved that lure as much as my grandfather and now have grand children of my own who are reaching fishing age and I am sure we could have a ball with it.  Just to make sure losing it again would not be a problem I plan to replicate it in exacting detail and fish the newly fabricated copies.  It worked great!  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hey FishEatingMan,
I did a little research...and found a few Vibra Bats on eBay. here's a link to a yellow one:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Bat...35c187c83f

Then I also found this great info on Lure Lore:  http://www.lurelore.com/vibrabat.html

Say...you mentioned making copies of one...I would be surely interested in one of those! Good luck with the project!
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, if it wasn't for my super smooth carbon drag, my 30 year old Trilene would bust!
